Wanted to wait until the last week to post the first and last mock draft. Every year we go in knowing what we need and every year we typically come out with most of the same needs. The draft never goes as expected which is why it is so hard to predict. We need an offensive guard to replace Colon but with the 20 guys competing in camp I’m sure we’ll find one. We've needed a true free safety for over 10 years now but Gilchrist and the 16 corners we have will figure it out. We've needed an outside linebacker for what seems like the last 20 years and while Gregory, Ray, and Dupree are all possibilities I see no reason taking them unless we trade down. The ideal situation would be trading down and grabbing one of them while also getting a lineman like Collins. Got 3 right last year but there were 12 picks lol. Trades are too complex and too hard to predict, therefore, I just predicted my top 5 guys which are Winston, Mariota, Fowler, Williams, and Beasley. Kevin White – West Virginia If Fowler is off the board we should go Cooper or White. I originally thought no brainer Cooper would be best because he is a better fit in the slot but after seeing what Brandon Marshall has done in the slot in the past, White may be the best fit. Marshall is towards the end of his career and it makes little sense to pass up a superstar like White for a project OLB. While I’d love to trade down if possible I would be very happy with this pick. There is a chance that one of Cooper or White goes before our pick leaving Williams or Beasley but regardless I go wide out, preferably White for me but not by much. Eli Harold – Virginia If we do go WR round 1, we must address the o-line or pass rush in round 2. I think we will be very tempted to go running back due to the fact every back but maybe one will be on the board starting round 2. These so called experts can hype Gurley and Gordon up all the want but the numbers speak for themselves, teams don’t go that route anymore. I wouldn’t mind a guy like Jake Fisher if on the board but I would prefer Harold over Thompson from Washington. If we were to somehow get Fowler round 1, I would go Fisher before a WR like DGB or Strong from ASU. Shane Ray may slip but I doubt a team in the late 20’s-30’s lets him slide to round 2. Some may say Harold won’t be here but I see a late run of WR’s guaranteeing he is. My wild card is Marcus Peters if he’s on the board as crazy as it is I wouldn’t be shocked to see it happen. We’ve met with him numerous times and I don’t know if he can play FS but if he can it’ll be interesting. David Johnson – Northern Iowa At this point adding a lineman to an already overflow of middle talent wouldn’t make sense. I’d rather see Dozier, Oboushi, Johnson, and the older guys compete. Sadly I think we just miss out on Duke Johnson who I would love to add to our backfield. I like Orchard from Utah if we don’t get Fowler or Harold. Stefon Diggs – Maryland Every year, we have this type of pick, the pick that makes little sense to most. The best example for this pick would be Joe McKnight leading to the trade of Leon. The way I see it if we take a WR #1 Kerley goes from being overpaid to being overpaid. While that doesn’t make him expendable this does. Diggs can handle all return jobs which Kerley does not. I’m not going to mock trades but this one makes a lot of sense. I’m not putting any stock into the bums Idzik drafted, if they can play then they need to prove it. There will still be a spot for them and 2 spots if we do let Kerley go. Marshall, Decker, White, (Kerley), Diggs, (TBA). It’s not like a 4th rounder changes much of anything. Half of our picks after the 4th round last year played elsewhere (knock at idzik). My wildcards are Ifo Ekpre-Olumu from Oregon and Tyler Lockett from KSU. Nobody knows what’s going down in the 7th. Half the time we spend the 7th round wondering why projected 5th rounders’ are still on the board and why guys without scouting reports went in the 3rd round (knock at idzik). I’ll take a shot with free safety Tevin McDonald and Brock Hekking (because he’s awesome.)
Started this awhile back so some a couple guys may be missing but no one important. QB: Geno Smith – Ryan Fitzpatrick – Matt Simms RB: Chris Ivory – Bilal Powell – Steven Ridley – David Johnson - Daryl Richardson FB: Tommy Bohanon WR: Brandon Marshall – Chris Owusu - Shaq Evans WR: Eric Decker –Stefon Diggs - TJ Graham WR: Kevin White - Jeremy Kerley – Quincy Enunwa TE: Jace Amaro – Jeff Cumberland – Kellen Davis - Zach Sudfeld – Chris Pantale LT: D’Brickishaw Ferguson – James Brewer LG: James Carpenter – Oday Oboushi – Brian Winters C: Nick Mangold – Dalton Freeman RG: Willie Colon – Dakota Dozier - Wesley Johnson RT: Breno Giacomini - Corey Hillard - Ben Ijalana DE: Muhammad Wilkerson – Legar Douzable - Stephen Bowen NT: Damon Harrison – TJ Barnes DE: Sheldon Richardson - Kevin Vickerson OLB: Quinton Coples - Jason Babin - Trevor Reilly MLB: David Harris – Erin Henderson – Joe Mays MLB: Demario Davis – Jamari Lattimore OLB: Eli Harold - Calvin Pace - IK Enemkpali – Brock Hekking CB: Darrelle Revis - Buster Skrine - Dexter McDougle - Darrin Walls CB: Antonio Cromartie - Dee Milliner – Marcus Williams FS: Marcus Gilchrist - Jaiquawn Jarrett- Tevin McDonald SS: Calvin Pryor – Antonio Allen – Rontez Miles
I like this mock draft solely for drafting a guy with a mullet in the 7th. Well done. Oh sure, the first 3 picks are great too. But Fear the Mullet.
Thanks, and yeah I think he's the best fit at that time. I want Duke badly but his stock is too high.
It was all a great read except the part about kerley. You said "goes from being overpaid to being overpaid." what?
Not a fan of taking a RB earlier than the third. Tbh I like David way better than Duke. David's bigger faster stronger. If he wasn't there I would take Tevin Coleman.
The contract Kerley currently has is fine IMO as he can be a good #3 even though he hasn't played up to it so far (since the new deal.) If we draft White he's making nearly 3 million as a 4 and if we draft a guy who can do the same things as Kerley plus more his contract goes from OK to Bad to Really Bad.
I like the draft a lot. I worry that Harold isn't around in the 2nd though. Would you take an olive man like Peat instead or reach for A guy like Orchard?
I would take Peat no doubt. Not sure he'll be there but regardless I wouldn't take Orchard until very late 2nd, early 3rd round anyway.
I hope not. Last year I just knew we would take Boyd and I literally begged for any other QB. Would've loved to have taken a worthy one last year but thankfully Rex and Idzik are gone so we should pass unless there is good value. Grayson, Hundley, Petty, Mannion would be okay day 3 but other than them I'm not sure there is anyone worth drafting. Take the top 2 away and that leaves us with only those 4 to choose from.
Put your QB lottery pick on Hundley in the 3rd round. QB classes are crapshoot, and good QBs have come from the later rounds. The safest play is to invest a 3rd-4th round pick every couple years until you finally choose a guy who becomes a franchise QB. Why Hundley? Because he has more upside than Grayson, Petty, and Mannion. Dude can flat out run and he's an ok thrower. Could be the next Kaepernick.
I would sign up for that draft. I like it a lot. I would prefer Cooper but White does have upside. Idk about hulk hogan jr. but you acknowledge thats just for fun. The other non-1st rounders you have I really like. I like Harold and Johnson and I know Diggs has loads of talent, I would not be surprised if he's a better pro than he was a college player, I think Diggs is my favorite pick in this mock.
Just don't see value in wasting a pick on a project QB when a guy like Johnson can come in and help immiately. If it was the same situation as last year I would say to take 2 regardless of the huge difference in picks.
I'm not saying I want Hundley, but is it a wasted pick if the QB you take in the 3rd or 4th round develops into at least a quality backup? How about if he develops into a quality starter? While the odds are against it, it can happen. Some positions just take longer to develop (QB, OLB, OL, CB and WR). Does that mean you shouldn't take a player at one of those positions? No. It just means that you have to be patient. If you can get a solid backup QB or starter out of the 3rd or 4th round, the value is insanely good, and the impact on the team will 10x greater than any positional player you take at that pick, unless that positional player turns out to be a perennial All Pro and HOFer.
No which is why we should have taken one or even two last year. Nobody has that kind of potential this year. Unless we trade back getting more picks we can't waste one of the few picks we have on a project QB when we have already have one. None of these guys will be a good ROI.
I agree. Most will probably disagree, but I still maintain that Teddy Bridgewater should have been our #1 pick last year.
In hindsight I agree. At the time of the draft I only wanted Mettenberger,Mclroy, Murray as a backup giving Geno another year. We chose that path last year and most likely will be forced this year, unless Fitz wins of course.
