How often does that work out? So tank and take a chance on an alleged rapist with the 1st overall pick? Okay.
The Colts were a team built for success dependent on an all time great QB, even if they had tried their hardest after Manning went down they would have been lucky to win 4 games
No, absolutely not. You tank for the best player, not for the most-highly-discussed-QB. When the best player is also the best QB prospect in 5 years (like Luck was), it works out very well. Winston is a disaster waiting to happen. Mariota is simply not as well a regarded prospect as Luck was. That said, it's better to be drafting 1st than 6th; at the very least, you might get some idiot team come in and trade half their draft for that pick. The plain fact is ... the Colts tanked and because they did they are set at the QB position for 15 years. So a blanket "you never tank" is a comical.
Terrific. 4 wins gets them the 7th pick (and Ryan Tannehill), instead of the 1st pick (and Andrew Luck). Go ask the Colts if they'd rather have Tannehill or Luck.
Heh, pretty sure I never said "you never tank". Acceptable tanking would be trying out your depth to see what you have for next year. As a diehard fan, I find it VERY difficult to root against my team. Your example was Andrew Luck. There is no Andrew Luck in this draft. Matter of fact, there is no world beater at ANY position this year (and a deep draft at certain positions). So why tank? Even at 6, the Jets can get a dynamic player.
They lost their first 13 games, let's not pretend that they really tanked the end of the season when they won 2 of the last 3 games, and if they really started the season wanting to get the first pick overall they could have just stayed with Curtis Painter instead of signing Kerry Collins to start I disagree with anyone who thinks that was a classic tank job
You know I have seen you make good points about losing games being okay in the long run but this is just blatant trolling
There is no situation where having the 6th pick in the draft is more advantageous (to winning a championship as quickly as possible in the future) than having the 1st pick in the draft. None.
Are you saying you have a better shot at getting a better player at 1 than at 6? I think there are a few posters here that would disagree. Not the brighter ones, mind you. _
Well, yes ... of course. But not only that, if you don't happen to like any of the players, you have an infinitely better chance of having some other team offer you a ton (because they do love one of the players) to trade up into your slot. It shouldn't even have to be said (but apparently here it does), but you are always in a better position with the #1 pick than the #6 pick.
If you didn't get my point then maybe I am giving you too much credit, it maybe you are just content with trolling
I'm trying hard to think of how many more ways you could have said the same thing over and over again, and I just can't!
Once a team is eliminated from playoff possibilities, the players still want to keep their NFL careers going. They still want to rack up their stats, and winning means that they're less likely to draft better guys who will take their jobs. Coaches also want to keep their careers going, and their legacies - so they won't give up either.
There is a good chance that the Colts tanked to get Luck but he is a generational talent. As Manning was before him! There hasn't been anyone close to Luck since he came out... Timing is everything in football or sports in general...
I got your point. And while my response could be taken as trolling, it was mostly a tongue in cheek dig at some fans in the last thread we had on this topic. _
I'll take the Ws over a higher draft pick. Even if it's an inconsequential game. Of course if a Lew Alcindor is up for selection than this holier than thou attitude of mine might just shift a little bit. Or better yet let the NFL play favorites for their New York franchise just like David Stern did in 1985 when the Knicks ended up with Patrick Ewing http://www.complex.com/sports/2013/08/craziest-rumors-sports-history/stern-knicks-lottery-ewing.
