http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/24/eagles-may-cut-evan-mathis-if-they-cant-trade-him/ Evan Mathis would be one of our biggest offseason pickups IMO. He is still a dominant guard and would instantly upgrade our OL. I am surprised we haven't tried to throw the eagles a late round pick for this guy rather than talking about spending a high round pick on a rookie that may or may not contribute this year. Guard is still a glaring need as the guys we brought in would be better served as backups.
While I've been saying the O-line needs a big upgrade for over 2 years, this may be why they havent made a move:
It would be a good pick up but he neither falls into the cheap vet or promising rookie classification - I can't see how we make room for him unless that salary is negotiable. It sounds like it isn't.
Why trade for him if they are gonna cut him? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/24/eagles-may-cut-evan-mathis-if-they-cant-trade-him/
If he would've hit the market on March 10 Id have wanted to sign him but now I'm not sure we have space.
You trade for him to prevent other teams from signing him, obviously. It's the same reason we traded for Marshall. In this case we should not make the trade. We've given way too many picks already.
We could trade a 2016 pick if he's that good. But is $7-8M for a stud guard unreasonable? Numbers go up so much every year I have no idea. What were we paying Faneca? (haha probably $300 a game)
He's going on 34. He's not near 30. I'm not opposed it's just a question. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We don't have the money for his current contract and isn't he insisting on even more which is why he is on the block? http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2015/03/24/eagles-may-cut-evan-mathis-if-they-cant-trade-him/
Guards aren't worth the money he wants but somebody with a lot left over like Oakland or Jacksonville will pick him up.
That kind of thinking puts Brian Winters in a starting job and your QB in injured reserve. Unlike RBs and WRs, offensive linemen are involved in every play on offense. You can not run the ball or complete passes without the big uglies blocking up front.
