I'd say both will be top 5 defenses for sure. I wouldn't be surprised if both times we play them neither team reaches 20.

Not like he ever ran anyway. You should know the pats just make solid rbs out of anyone, like they have a factory.

Rex Ryan is the Master. Bowles is the pupil. Bowles runs a mirror image of Ryan's defensive philosophy so it will probably come down to who has the better players. Jets have the better secondary, Bills have (by far) the better D-Line. It might come down to what type of teams we play against this year.

Rex's defensive "Genius" is overrated, IMO. He's really a one-trick pony: the blitz. His best blitz, the "2-DL-in-a-two-point-stance-and-everyone-else-standing-up" defense. Other than that, he doesn't do anything innovative.

I was of the opinion last season that his calls were pedestrian: he blitzed when expected. And his blitzes, for the most part, were not disguised or particularly effective. His defensive calls cost the Jets AT LEAST TWO games: the game against Minnesota and the game against the Broncos. In the Vikings game, he called an all-out blitz, leaving Richardson in coverage, which allowed a 90-yard TD in overtime. And against the Broncos, he had Manning bottled up playing coverage and then, for no good reason, started blitzing, which allowed Manning to get some drives going.

Yardage is literally the worst stat to grade a defense on. We have been bad at defense for four years in the areas that actually matter such as red zone, third down prevention, turnovers and points per play. Rex's "break but don't bend defense" creates a deceptive yardage stat.

Bowles defense is nothing like Rex's other than being a 3-4 base,

If anyone is a fraud it's you. I've seen lots of comments that suggest people are sick of your criticism of the Jets, staff, and FO.
I tend to think you are a troll disguised as a so-called Jets fan.

I would of loved to see rex with the d we have now. We would've been insane. I'm confident that Bowles will hold it down tho. Hopefully he knows more about offense than rex. Anybody know if he has any knowledge about offense at all?

..and a reliance on press man corners
..and a reliance on heavy blitz
..and a reliance on interchangeable safeties
..and a reliance on 3 safety sets
..and a reliance on multi DB sets (3-4-5). You know, like how Rex beat Belicheck in the playoffs with 5 DBs

    yeah, but they're nothing alike.

Rex is coaching the Bills. It's a whole new FO, HC, and staff here now. Thank God

Umm, yea I know, but thanks. It's been going on before Rex's departure. Don't blame Rex, I don't care if he's gone, blame Woody and Idzik, I don't know who to blame more, Woody for hiring that clown or Idzik for undermining Rex.

I'm not gonna say Bowles is a better defensive coach then Rex without seeing him play his first game as head coach of the NY Jets.I do think overall the Bills roster and ours are very close talent wise its gonna be very intresting .Perhaps Jets vs Bills Monday Night Football this year?

Criticizing Rex as a HC is fine and reasonable but to call him a one trick pony on defense is just thick and will be proven ridiculous in short order as he steps into a ready made good defense again. You can't make chicken soup out of chicken shit, he got forced into a lot of feeble gimmicks and predictable dialups last year because the personnel simply wasn't there to scheme effectively.

The whole philosophy of moving on from Rex and towards a guy like Bowles is to try to recreate the defensive philosophy although establishing a new identity, and surpass Rex's HC production by eliminating stupid game management, offensive, and personnel decisions that chronically hamper Rex's coaching efficacy.

Agreed, but I'd like to add to that with Rex not having full control over his full roster at any point during his tenure here. With Tanny and Idzik being control freaks they never gave him exactly what he needed when it was clear certain areas needed upgrades. It was a noble effort and had Sanchez been what we thought he could be , things might have been drastically different since 2010.

If it's so ridiculous, please, tell me another trick he has besides the overload blitz. And, if he's a genius then personnel deficiencies would not seem to be much of a hindrance. I mean, can't basically anyone field a top-10 defense if it's stacked with talent?

You know, there were plenty of games, I've named two already, where if he had just played conservatively, the Jets probably win or at least stop the multitude of 3rd-and-longs that were completed against his defense.

Again, this is sloppy hero worship on your part: Rex was an "OK" defensive genius, but, really, last year was NOT a particularly good year for him. Sure, his secondary was not top flight--garbage, really--but a true genius adjusts his schemes to fit the personnel. He doesn't keep doing the same things that were shown to be ineffective.
