So what's the alternative? Do what John Idzik did last year and not try to improve the team in the meantime? This team needed an overhaul in the backfield, and they did just that.
Idzik had a sound strategy; his problem was that if you don't sign free agents to create financial flexibility for the long term you better damn well hit on your draft picks so you are accruing talent. "look how much cap room we have!" doesn't absolve you for fielding a 4-12 team. I like what Idzik did in free agency last year; overpaying the marginal players on the market wasn't the way to go, and they wouldn't have saved our season. But I am glad he was fired for not being able to evaluate talent. The Milliner pick I will never forgive.
Our defensive scheme requires a sick secondary. Bowles led the league in blitzing last year. We now have elite talent, experience and depth in what was our weakest area. This has been a phenomenal offseason. Best week to be a Jets fan in many years.
What I really like about what Mac has done is that while for the next 2 or 3 years guys like Revis, Marshall, and Cromartie will eat up most of the playing time, it allows the Jets time to build up our depth in the draft, and let those younger players develop without the pressure on them to have to perform day one and then hopefully they will be able to step in later on. Idzik had the right idea of building through the draft, but what he forgot is that you can easily ruin a young players development by making them play when they are not ready.
Wow for a darksider you buy a lot into the koolaid. This is not how you build a team and it is not sustainable in the long run. What has maccagnan done except open someone else's wallet and spend their money? Its really incredibly appalling how jets fans continue to support this type of development. You build for the long run. Tying up cap space to a cb for 17 million is NOT worth it. But I guess I cant blame macaggnan too much . this has woodys grubby hands all over it.
This cannot be overstated enough. Our defense is going to be outstanding and a lot of fun to watch. _
I'm not sure how you could be more wrong. It is exactly the GM's job to "open someone else's wallet and spend their money..." it's the football team's owner's wallet after all. He didn't open up the government's wallet or YOUR wallet. Please, take this in the good spirit it was given: yours was a moronic statement that ignores the past season's abject failures that cost two men their jobs. With the lack of guaranteed contracts and the salary cap being expanded, you have to stock your team for TODAY. A GM can't plan to win next year or 3 years down the road. Because then you're NEVER winning. It's ALWAYS "in a couple of years..." Look at all the contracts Mac has signed or acquired. They are all short-term rentals because that's the way the league is built: win fucking NOW. At some point, a GM may need to take on an unfavorable contract or two. To get over the hump. But, really, Mac has signed good players (at least he thinks so) for very friendly deals. And now we wait for his draft, where you stock your team "long-term".
Our secondary on paper is a top 5 unit in the league. Hope it comes to fruition. Now if only Big Mac can get us a CJ Spiller or Reggie Bush we will be all set heading into the draft. The lack of speed on the offensive side of the ball concerns me a bit still.
