You also have to take into account the terrible field position that our putrid offense put the defense in. When a team is at midfield starting an offensive drive, they don't have to accumulate much yardage to score. This is a very real reason why yardage allowed is a very deceptive and inaccurate gauge of defensive efficiency. points allowed means far more than yards imo, even if the defense is hindered by the offense
Fwiw, I think this year's defense will eclipse last year's in both points and yards allowed by a significant margin, no matter the offensive production
it is a stat hindered by the offense and special teams....you got that part right. what about turnovers, where the D forces a 3 and out, but a FG is put up? they did their job, didn't allow a FD, but still pts counts against them according to your metric. we've seen plenty of that. let alone pick 6, fumble return TDs, or kick return TDs.. look at yds allowed plus red zone efficiency. that will tell you what you are looking for.. forget points...it's a total team effort more than just a defensive effort.
i would agree as the red zone efficiency will improve, and the passing TDs allowed will go down. but if the offense doesn't start holding it's weight, then you might still see a large discrepancy between yds allowed and points allowed. we saw that in Rex's early years here when the D was quite good.
Your turnovers/FGs argument would hold more water if the Jets hadn't been 3rd worst in passing TDs allowed.
i was the one citing the passing TD's allowed, remember? i agree there were problems in the secondary, and that translated to some red zone struggles. i was trying to illustrate exactly that.. but in terms of points being the best defensive statistic: back in 2011 with Cro and Revis, we only allowed 15 passing TD's......2nd best in the league. we were also 5th best in league in total ydg.. BUT, we were 20th in pts allowed. so we didn't give up many yds, we weren't bad in the red zone, but yet we were very avg in points. how could that be? Sanchez was a turnover machine, threw pick 6's, and our special teams had a real down year. that's how.. if you looked at only points, you would think our D was poor, and that was not the case. if you looked at yds allowed and red zone efficiency, it would tell a much more accurate story. a very good but not great D. then of course you could break it down further statistically, and figure out what they were good at, and what they were avg at. bottom line, you have to look a few things really to get the full picture. imo if you were to only look at 2 things, it would be yds allowed and red zone efficiency.. take it or leave it.......lol, i've given enough good examples as to why.
back on point....it was obvious the secondary was the issue last year. does it make sense to bring in both Cro and Gilchrist at this point? Gilchrist isn't stellar, but he is versatile. If Bowles likes him, i'm intrigued. i was really hoping to get more Oline and TE help, but the options are thinning there.
That's your opinion and I disagree with it. It was always very annoying to me that Rex Ryan would brag about that yardage stat (and use it to illustrate defensive performance overall) simply because his defense was not as good as he pretended it was. Jets fans bragged about yardage ranking and when you really looked at the success of teams you could see that the yardage ranking didn't like up with the overall success of the team. 2011 was a fall off year for the Jets and the amazin yardage allowed stat did not jibe with the actual success of the Jets, it was just a morale booster for fans that needed something to be happy about. And it sure sounds like you were one of those fans
so this is a Rex thing for you.......that explains a lot. there is a reason the NFL ranks defenses by ydg. you just don't want to except that as you were annoyed that Rex would reference it. i gave you pages of rationale, including looking at more things than just ydg, and you counter with 'but Rex'. just when i thought the discussion may have been going somewhere.. i'm not going to waste any more time.. go ahead and look at pts alone, and you'll never see an accurate picture.
No but nice try while failing to minimize my argument. Maybe when you can convincingly argue against me you won't have to resort to getting personal
where was i personal? you yourself said you were annoyed by Rex citing yds allowed.. and that is was just some morale booster. kinda obvious you have a personal bias.. that's not even a logical argument with anything to do with actual defense. i explained a lot of things, which you really haven't really responded to or countered, and you haven't built an argument as to why points allowed should be the sole metric of measuring defenses. so it really isn't worth me continuing the discussion.
I liked what I saw of him when we played Buff. He got the ball and just sort of rumbled down field. The real question is can the guy block?
I'm hoping that its taking so long because the Jets realize they need to pick up an offensive lineman as well as re-up Harrison or Ellis. It would be nice to get a RB, Helu for 2 mil, but the draft is supposed to be full of good guys. Over the cap has us at 22 mil which drops into the middle teens once you account for the rooks. I figure at market value it would take like 12+ mil to get Cro and Gilchrist in here. That would leave almost nothing much left in the vault to get a quality o-lineman or cover our butts with a half decent offer on Snacks. It would also leave us out in the cold for some bargain basement shopping.
Can you guys stop arguing about stupid stats about a defense that no longer matters? I want to read thoughts and news about the guy this thread is about. Anything more on Gilchrist? I really like some of the film I've watched of him. I was stoked about this signing, wonder what happened.
