Exactly. For all we know it could be he and his agent plodding along in the negotiations hoping to push them to next season after he has a big year in his contract year. There's been documentation of him taking plays off along with him getting ejected against Green Bay. If he puts up a 15 sack season his stock will skyrocket rather then trying to re up his contract off a down year. He's a very good player but he's ultimately not completely expendable given how Richardson has turned out. We have to remember that whatever we give Wilkerson sets the standard for Richardson's contract which is why even back to Idzik's tenure it's been played very carefully. I hope he stays with the Jets but we can't give him $14-$15 million, with Revis $16 million, Harris' $7.5 mill, Skrine $6.25 And have any chance of keeping Richardson. That alone + $13-$14 million for Rich puts us at nearly half our cap in 5 players on the defensive side of the ball.
Also, if what you're saying is true, then Wilk would be taking a risk waiting till next season. What if he suffers a terrible injury or something (knock on wood)?
Very true. If given the choice between the 2 I take Sheldon everytime. I think Mo will be destined for the franchise tag.
Then he screwed himself, theoretically, although it's not certain that he and his pimp are pushing negotiations till next year
How big of a risk is it though? His stock is much lower than it was last year. Regardless of what we may think of him as a player his line remains the same; he only had a 6 sack season last year on a terrible defense. People don't like to compare him to Watt, Suh, and other top end players, but I'm sure his agents do when discussing contracts. I'm not blaming the defenses performance on him or demeaning him as a player, but if they want to keep both they have to play the situation correctly in not overpaying Wilk on the premise that "we need to keep him under all circumstances." We need to extend him at our price because as far as he's concerned he's essentially locked into our team for another two years if we say so.
I am interested to see what Wilk's contract will be with Revis and Suh getting QB type contracts. With the cap getting close to the 150million range and the Jets not having a elite QB to pay they could probably get through a few years overlap where where Revis, Wilkerson, and Sheldon all get paid. Important things to remember here are Wilkerson is not at Revis level and as good as he is he's not the best D lineman on this team. Hopefully they can lock him up at the right price.
Let him play out his contract, then franchise him. Then decide if you want to keep him, Richardson, or both. Only way we'll be Able to keep both is if we still have no QB, or a QB under his rookie deal. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk
My point was that even if you got a first rounder for Wilkerson, it wouldn't be fair compensation. He's worth more than that. I don't understand everyone's infatuation with trading top flight players for one first rounder. Very rarely do picks turn into all-pros. Why trade a sure thing for a maybe? As far as his contract goes, I really don't think they've put an offer on the table yet. My guess is the hang up could be guaranteed money and a focus on FA. I seriously doubt he gets much more than 12 mil per year or is really fighting for much more.
I'm sure they've been in contact and are just waiting to see what they have left with this year's cap to see how much to front load it.
If they sign Gilchist and Cro they will have nothing left, I don't think extending him is a priority this year.
With an improved secondary, the QB is going to hold on to the ball a little bit longer, and Wilkerson has the potential to have a monster year, maybe 13+ sacks. We really should sign him now before he can demand even more.
He's going to keep getting better, and if you franchise him, then you're going to have to pay him for his production for the next year, and that production will probably be even greater being in year 2 of Bowles' schemes. If we draft a stud olb this year who frees up the focus on Wilkerson, Wilkerson will be even better. I guess paying him at that point will still be a good problem to have.
it's interesting to see how Macc words the new contracts he's handing out. Revis for example. Big dollars the first 2 years, then cuttable. Same with Skrine, Carpenter and Marshall. You can almost bet at least 2 of our new additions will be subtractions in 2 years....the year of Mo and Richardson.
good observation. i think part of that is so we are not married to risk. for revis and marshall its age. for skrine and carpenter its making the leap to the next level. i dont really see it as a plan for mo and sheldon but that theory definitely makes sense
The "infatuation" with it is to cash in on a player that's not coming back anyways. We've done it before with John Abraham, although that was a much different situation. My whole point is that if a team is willing to break the bank and throw a kings ransom at us for him you have to think about it long and hard before just dismissing it right away because he's a good player. That's the key; he's a good player, not a great player and if you can get compensation as if he's a great player you jump on that. Hopefully they can agree on a deal that works for both sides rather than having to go down the avenue and one that doesn't set a ridiculously high standard for Sheldon Richardson.
I understand we've done it before. Twice. We've lucked out in Mangold and Richardson. Luck runs out. We can't just keep letting great, young, proven players walk out the door. You have to resign your guys. That's the only problem I've had thus far with this off-season. Mac should've taken care of Wilkerson before anything.
