With the management team you have now, I don't think Geno will stay for long. The people currently running the Jets make moves, and I think you'll be looking at a new QB soon.
I think Geno will get his shot. If by some chance Mariotta falls to the Jets they'll let Geno start the season. Best case scenario he does well enough to let him play out the year and maybe accrue some value. Worst case you give Mariotta some season time to watch and learn and then let him take over. If they were trying hard to get Hoyer they likely have not intention of having a rookie starting QB.
