Geno Smith sucks. You can try to dance around that but it is a basic fact, and unless you plan on addressing it, your fancy language is a pile of dumb.

Apparently the language I was using was too fancy because you didn't understand that I was saying Mariota is too much like Geno, which is why I don't want to spend a high draft pick on him.

I agree that there is a similarity between them not knowing the play from under center but I think that is where the similarities end

Agree, I don't see DGB going past the 14th pick if he makes it out of the top 10

I'm strongly leaning towards White over Mariota of we can't trade the pick for a stash of picks. I think there will be enough QB prospects in the second and third rounds that we can pass on taking a risk in drafting Mariota. Having said that, it's a risk NOT drafting Mariota too.

Really, it all depends on free agency. If we land someone like Cobb or (and I know it's not a reality) Maclin then I would even consider going best pass rusher at 6. Basically, there's way too much unknown at this point. But if we are talking fantasy:

    Kevin White
    Spiller
Renegotiated Harvin OR Shorts OR Crabtree
    Brett Hundley
    Maxwell and Cro
    Worilds

My only problem with going OLB/DE early is that there are so many good ones in this draft that a solid player can be had in the second and we won't be giving him a 100mil contract 4 years from now. Same with RB. But the top end receivers are special, I don't think we can afford to pas on one

There's a lot more similarities than that, just saying the phrase playing under center doesn't really mean that much. A college spread offense (especially offenses like WV and Oregon) is way different than pro offenses in more than just incorporating a dropback from under center. The reads they have to make down the field are more complex, and the pressure they have to deal with while making those reads generally has a lot more time to get there than with the short passes of a collegiate spread offense.

Both Geno and Mariota displayed a lot of similar characteristics, with good athleticism, an accurate strong arm, and a mastery over their similar collegiate systems. I think that despite the general consensus that Mariota is more even keeled than Geno, I've still seen some panic under pressure from Mariota at times he is asked to make multiple reads down the field. The trouble is there is little to go on when trying to see Mariota in these circumstances because such a high percentage of his plays were short passes or passes behind the LoS that basically were run plays for all intents and purposes.

I'm not saying I wouldn't want Mariota as a Jet, but I am definitely saying I don't want him taken with the 6th overall pick.

I wouldn't mind Hundley in the 3rd round if the front office doesn't see anyone else better on the board, and unless we get Kevin White with the sixth I'd be good with trading back to get a few extra picks. There are some good offensive linemen, pass rushers, WR's, and CB's who will be available outside of the top 10 so if we could somehow pick up two 1st rounders this year I'd be ecstatic. It all depends on how the draft falls but if Cleveland or Philly are prepared to make a big trade for Mariota, I would definitely want us to consider it strongly. Especially because I believe there's a chance to land Kevin White, I think I'd keep Harvin on his current deal because at most you save a couple million, but if you eat that you can cut him next year with no cap penalty and then you have White ready to step up after a year of getting worked into the offense.

I've seen a lot of these mock offseasons on the board and I can't believe Cumberland gets glossed over. He will make $1.9mm and was probably the worst blocking and catching TE in the league. I wouldn't even bring him to camp - I would sign Virgil Greene or Spaeth and cut Cumberland immediately ( no cap hit)

Wow! I will be blown away if that happens. For all his talent, I can't see anyone risking a 1st round pick on him.

A couple of years ago, I really liked Cumberland his potential, but as it has turned out, that's all he is is potential. Unless Gailey and his staff are miracle workers, I can't see keeping Cumberland, either. I might bring him into TC and let him have to earn a spot on the roster, but for certain, I'd sign a FA TE and make it known to Amaro, Cumberland, Sudfeld and Pantale that I was only planning on keeping 3 TEs regardless of where they were drafted, and all 3 TEs will not only know how to block but be good blockers. I'd be certain to look both Cumberland AND Amaro in the eye when I said that. If Amaro still couldn't block, I might cut him some slack, but I'd tell him that if couldn't block by the end of this season his ass was as good as gone.
