IMO FS and SS are only losing distinction with Rex. Pryor is not a FS imo. He doesn't have the ball or coverage skills. He's a big hitter and prototypical in the box safety (SS).
we have very little talent or experience. soft schedule, at least for now. short of a killer FA and draft, i don't see us netting more than 6 wins. we need a major talent infusion, and most importantly, a QB.
What I would like to see this year: 1. Geno Smith does not start at QB. 2. We spend at least half of our available cap room on extensions and free agency this year. 3. We find at least three or four players in the draft that can make a impact by year two (trading down would help accomplish this goal). 4. Add at least one of the following starting caliber players through free agency or the draft this year - QB (solid backup would be OK if he starts over Geno now), OLB, CB, ILB, OL, RB 5. Win at least seven games
I don't understand why people are set on who they want starting, etc. Its a new system, staff, and a clean slate. Here's what WE ALL should expect... 1. The best players play regardless of history, draft pedigree, salary, etc. 2. The CS makes quality adjustments week to week and in game that put our team in the best position to win. 3. The players who play well get rewarded (see Mo) financially. 4. We make smart signings in free agency aquiring talent but not cap strapping ourselves if it don't work out. 5. We draft BPA at least in the first 2 days, regardless of position.
I basically agree with your post, but not necessarily #5. One of the strengths of this draft is the DT position. A number of them will go high in the first round. It's possible that the BPA at #6 could be a DT. That would be a wasted pick. We already have Snacks, Ellis, Wilkerson, Coples and Richardson that can play DT. If the BPA at #6 is a DT, then the Jets either need to trade down or take the 2nd BPA (or 3rd BPA if #2 is also a DT).
depends on who we draft if we draft mariota or winston my expectations may be higher compared to another player like brandon scherff or randy gregory
There's so much unknown still it'd be silly to make any predictions. We need an upgrade at QB. We need upgrades are both guard positions and left tackle (Ferguson just can't pass block to save his life anymore). We need another receiver. We need a FS. We need a veteran CB that can at least be a really good #2 in case McDougle fails. We need a ILB to replace Harris. He's a sure tackler, but his speed is too huge a liability for today's pass-happy NFL. We need fast OLB that can both blitz and play coverage. We've got the money and draft picks to do fix a lot of those, but we'll see. It's a tall order and not a one season fix.
How on earth can anybody have any expectation at all until you see who we draft and who we spend that 60 million on?
Because we're not an expansion team. There is a nucleus of a nice roster but it lacked a few items that hopefully will be addressed in FA. There is always an expectation. Not so much with record, but with how the team is run, what direction the team is headed and measureable progress in the meantime.
I think then you agree in a round a bout way. You're right, DT is a big position, but at #6 only one guy fits the bill at possibly being there at the position and being rated top of the board: Leonard Williams. Now, while we are stacked on Dline - I still don't think you pass up the BPA. However, you could trade down at that point.
There's another kid whose last name is Shelton, I think, that really stood out at the Sr. Bowl. He will probably zoom up the charts. Regardless, if either is the best pick at #6, if I can't trade down, I'm not taking either one. I'm taking the next best prospect on my draft board. IMO you don't waste your #1 pick on a player that will never play. In most cases the #1 pick should be an almost instant starter. Whoever isn't going to replace Snacks, Mo or Richardson, and probably not even Ellis.
Let's say that Danny Shelton is the best available player at #6. Whether we take someone else or trade down let's assume that we get less than Shelton is capable of contributing. Currently we have no defensive lineman on our roster that is signed through 2017. Richardson is the only defensive lineman that is locked up for 2016 as Mo Wilkerson and Coples will become a free agent after this year. We can keep Snacks on the tender for one more year but after that he will be an unrestricted free agent. Even Ellis and Douzable are unrestricted free agents this year. In a year or two we may end up regretting passing on Shelton if any of our current starters is taken away by someone else. They don't even have to offer more money than us if it looks like they can win a SB before we get our act together here.
This. Pryor is clearly a run supporting SS. I think Bowles will put him where he belongs, along with finding a good FS in free agency.
