The longer it takes to name a starter in the competition the bigger problem we have. That'll mean no one guy stood out above the others and we'll be looking at another lost year. I have a funny feeling Big Mac is going to make a bold move for a QB, I don't know why but it's just a hunch.
If you're right, he'd better not fail. If he does in FA, he may never get a chance to draft one. If he trades up in the draft to get Mariota or Winston, the player had better not miss, or his career as a GM will be short-lived. I think it would be wiser for him to not trade up or swing for the fences on the QB position for a few years until he gets his feet wet. If Mariota or Winston fall to the Jets at #6, it's one thing to take them. You have to unless someone offers a Herschel Walker-type trade, and even then I'm not sure you can pass up a potential franchise QB. It's another thing altogether, however, to trade up in the draft or trade a bunch of draft picks to another team for a backup QB in hopes that he can be your starter. I hope that your gut is wrong. I'd like to see Mac succeed and stick around for a long time so the Jets can develop some stability and continuity.
A true QB comp. was what happened in Seattle when they signed Matt Flynn and drafted Russell Wilson. Pete Carroll probably had Flynn penciled in as the starter, but if I remember correctly, from the get-go they were saying it was an open competition. Wilson clearly outplayed Flynn and so he was named the week 1 starter.
It is funny when you read about how these mid round QBs are rated coming out of college. What was Brady's rating? Good arm, good accuracy, tall, immobile? He had no athletic ability really. One never knows.
Unless Geno puts in a great preseason, it will come down to the last minute. If a rookie gets the job I'll puke.
