If we get some pretty decent FA like an rush line backer or oline I can see us trading back in the draft, unless one of the qbs fall to us. It could change our whole draft process. Saying this I think we finally we have the right man in Mac to steer our team in the right direction.
"We have Kerley" Shouldn't prevent us from anything in FA. He was horrible this past season and didn't deserve his extension he received. It looks like we're cutting ties with Harvin. If that's the case we have to either take Cooper first round or hope we can get a starter Rd.2. We need to have a WR better than Kerley who can play on the outside. If we cut Harvin and go into next year with Decker and Kerley as our top 2 WRs get ready for 4-12 again.
. I don't want Houston here. I'm not sure why other fans are so obsessed with trying to top out this teams pass rush when we've got a blitz happy HC thats taking over a team thats ranked 6th in sacks last year and has a bunch of other more pressing needs. we have money but spending on the likes of Suh or Houston is still wasteful in the long run. speaking of that position though, one thing that I think goes unnoticed is how much a new OLB is gonna have to play a hand in pass coverage. OLB is about more than PASSRUSH 100% of the time, and based on some film I've seen of Bowles D in particular, the strong side linebacker is in coverage good and often. we'll need a multifaceted defender more than a one trick pony, (draft a Shaq Thompson over a shane ray for instance) Trevor Reilly has that capacity I think, but he's probably just a backup.
I don't agree about Kerley. He's underrated and was underused. I hope that if Gailey uses him prominently (70 receptions) as a slot receiver we'll be moving the chains a lot more than we did last season. You don't spend the money on strengths you spend it on weakness.
Kerley definitely regressed. He dropped key catches (I remember a 2 pt conversion but there were others). He's still been a good contributor esp in the past but he definitely wouldn't have garnered the contract we gave him in the open market.
A few guys have mentioned going after another big $ WR but I just don't see it given the contract decker signed last season and the possibility of re-upping Harvin. I'm hoping even if Cooper slips through our fingers( I don't see the Raiders letting him get by) we can grab a contributor at the position in the 2nd round.
38 catches. 409 Yards. 1 TD. That's in Marty's pass happy offense..doubt much is going to change because Gailey is his OC now. Kerley looked more like a cut candidate than a strength last season.
How many targets for Kerley per game. I would have thrown to him at least 10 on short crossing patterns etc. But you're right he didn't have a good season but partially due to injuries and being underused. He played better at the end of the season. But I was surprised at the timing of his extension. Right after they got Percy. But I'm glad they have him signed.
I could see Mac trading back as well, and how refreshing would that be? Tanny did it once or twice early, but needed to do it several times later to compensate for all the picks he traded away. With the Jets having so many holes, it wouldn't be hard to imagine Mac trading back. Of course it remains to be seen, but I really think that Mac is going to put on a clinic for Jets fans showing them how an excellent GM handles the draft,
Excellent? Damn sounds like he had you at "hello". Let's wait until the draft before we start singing Big Mac's praises.
I could be wrong for certain. I like the way he has gone about his job, not hesitating or waiting until after the draft to clean out the dead wood like Bradway in the scouting and personnel areas. I like his backround and the comments I've read about his knowledge and talent evaluation skills, as well as what I've read about the replacements he has hired. It could take a draft or two to really start seeing the benefits, if for no other reason than he's stuck with the current Jets regional scouts until after the draft, and getting his team assembled and on the same page. That said, I just have a good gut feeling about him. Maybe it's euphoria that Woody seemed to step back and allow experienced, knowledgeable football men like Wolf and Casserly to guide this process, and seemingly hired good, experienced football men with backgrounds in personnel and scouting. I also like the CS that Mac has assembled. They are experienced at different levels of coaching and most seem to be good at player development and putting players in a position to succeed. They also seem like coaches who will hold their players accountable and the team will have discipline. While the latter doesn't impact the draft and the job McCagnan does in the draft, it says to me that he's a solid, professional football man that knows what he's doing. He says that he has a plan for building the roster, and with his background in personnel and scouting as opposed to cap management and administration, I believe that there's a much better chance of that happening. Maybe it's just the fact that for the first time in many years, I have REAL hopes for the Jets franchise. I had similar hopes when Rex was first hired, but he quickly killed those hopes. I had some hope when Idizk was hired, but much less. Just a month or so ago, I had expected to no longer be rooting for the Jets because I didn't think that Woody would make the right decisions, handle the search in a professional manner, allow the FO "house" to be cleaned, or hire the right candidates for GM and HC. He seemingly fooled me, at least enough to give me hope.
I'm interested to see what Vet QB we bring in. I'd personally sign Shaun Hill and draft a developmental QB. I think he can start without embarrassing himself if Geno gets injured or mentally implodes which I hope he's past. Locker could be an option if the Coaching Staff sees something in him. Same can be said about Jimmy Clausen, who still has his believers in this league but I'm not sure we're the right fit. I'm not a fan of Hoyer, will be the most expensive and very limited. Sanchez might be the best QB on the market but we're not going down that road again. Mallett's a wildcard that I personally know little about but Maccaggnan spent a lot of time around him. Ugly names but it would be wise if the FO did their homework and brought the right guy on board. Geno is fine to come back next year but we need a solid backup. I doubt we bring back Vick it'd be a nightmare to go into next season with the same 3 QBs.
I think Matt Moore would be a good pickup. Plus, there's the small Bowles connection when he was with the Dolphins in 2011 and served as the interim HC in the final three games.
The team is $40-$50 million under the cap. Anyone they want as long as they're willing to pay the price. I want Larry Fitzgerald, a trade for Cousins or Foles, Cro.
