I'm more concerned with the fact he coached one of the worst secondaries in footbal the last 3 years.
Todd McShay retweeted Kevin Weidl @KevinW_ESPN 15m15 minutes ago Strong hire by the Jets adding Rex Hogan as Director of College Scouting. Good eye for talent and one of the better guys in the business.
Right. It makes no sense. Why not just call it CB's/Safeties then in that case? They should just leave it at DBs. Oh well, it's only this 1 article I've seen it worded that way. This is the only great thread right now seemingly. We don't have much else to think, and talk about other than the coach hires for now. Thank you to all the smart fans out there who have valuable input about these coaches the rest of us never heard of.
Maybe they are going to hire a cornerbacks coach Some teams have a safeties coach and a cornerbacks coach
Pepper Johnson is a great, great hire. He's going to be a defensive coordinator someday soon. He did a tremendous job working his way up in New England and last year he did a great job with Buffalo's DL - He helped make Jerry Hughes become a rich man this offseason. Very surprised Rex didn't keep him on there but then again Rex likes his own guys. Our gain. It's cool to have him back here too. I don't expect him to be a position coach for much longer in this league.
Does this hire bother anyone else? From an assistant WR coach on a basement team to a QB coach? I just hope he's merely here to catch Geno and Marcus's balls while Gailey takes the QBs
It happens a lot it's called he kind of got a promotion. Usually you go from runningbacks coach to recievers coach to qb coach to offensive coordinator to head coach Nothing out of the ordinary.
Todd Bowles added another three assistants to his New York Jets coaching staff, two of whom have no NFL experience in the position for which they were hired. On Tuesday, the Jets announced the hirings of Kevin Patullo (quarterbacks), Marcel Shipp (running backs) and Steve Marshall (offensive line). For Shipp, a former NFL running back, this is his first NFL coaching gig. Shipp, who knows Bowles from the Arizona Cardinals, got into coaching only three years ago. He spent one year in the United Football League, one year as a Cardinals intern and last year at his alma mater, UMass, where he coached the running backs. The quarterbacks position is an important job on any staff, particularly the Jets, who have a developing quarterback in Geno Smith. Patullo was the assistant receivers coach for the Tennessee Titans last season. Prior to that, he spent three seasons on Chan Gailey's staff with the Buffalo Bills (2010-12), working as a quality control assistant. The Jets' plan is to have Gailey, the offensive coordinator, assist Patullo with the quarterbacks. Marshall has coached with three teams, most recently with the Green Bay Packers. He was their assistant line coach for a year. http://espn.go.com/blog/new-york/je...aff?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=twitter
These last hires are a bit of a concern, since they have no experience in coaching their position. The Jets really need someone experienced if they have any realistic hopes of developing Geno and/or a rookie.
Of those 3 I'm probably most worried about Shipp. He sounds like a friend hire for Bowles, although he may be a guy that TB saw coaching potential in and told him to get as much diverse coaching experience as he could. Who knows. Hard to get worried about Marshall. I think, but what the eff do I know. Patullo looks like a mentorship hire from Chan, which could be good or bad. Chan will work hard with him and maybe teach him the entire offense while hammering the QB ins and outs. Chan isn't going to coach for a long time, but if he establishes a system he is going to need a protegé. This sounds sort of like that.
These assistants move around like musical chairs, if you look at the history. Sometimes you get a long time position coach but most of them will be likely gone during the 2018 season or in a different position(promoted) coaching on this team. Shipp might be a homer pick, he is from Patterson, Nj. But I can't name the other 31 running back coaches on the other teams. Tell me a runningback coach that is going to make ivory into mc coy, I want that guy.
I'd rather we had an OC that let Ivory be Ivory, he is an animal and is consistently put back into the kennel. What he needs is a compliment and Johnson isn't that. Maybe two scats to rotate in on lateral plays. Ivory could be a Lynch factor if he was allowed to gain a rhythm. He hasn't had that luxury ever in his career
I think it's dope that a grip of our coaching staff and front office is from NJ. Some people that would understand the jets fans passion and how bad they really deserve a winning team here.
