Here are the details of D'Brickshaw Fergeson's current contract with the Jets: 2015 2016 2017 Base Salary (Guaranteed) $5,950,000 $8,625,000 $11,275,000 Bonus (Prorated) $3,998,670 $3,732,000 $1,282,000 Roster Bonus $1,000,000 $1,000,000 $1,000,000 Cap Number $11,698,670 $14,107,000 $14,307,000 Dead Money (If Cut Before June 1) $9,012,670 $5,014,000 $1,282,000 Dead Money (If Cut After June 1) $3,998,670 $3,732,000 $1,282,000 Cap Savings (If Cut Before June 1) $2,686,000 $9,093,000 $13,025,000 Cap Savings (If Cut After June 1) $7,700,000 $10,375,000 $13,025,000 Starting left tackles are hard to find but I do not see how Brick is here in 2016 with the level of production we have been getting from him lately. It would seem that we not only need to start looking for our left tackle of the future but that we should also start talking to Brick about taking a pay cut sooner than later. Thoughts?
So I guess you would cut him after June 1 unless he is willing to renegotiate. I'm assuming decisions will be made after film review by the new coaching staff and after they put a grade on him. Probably Brick would accept a cut unless he wants to test FA waters. He's a Long Island guy and has been here his entire career. I wonder if the Giants would be interested in him if he is released.
He was very up and down this year, but still about an average LT, which does make him overpaid albeit still valuable. 2015 will really be the telling season. If his play regresses further, then his release seems likely. However, if he has a sort of revitalization where he at least improves his play to an above average or better level (sort of like what we saw out of Mangold but even to a lesser extent), then he should be kept on at his salary. I guess you'd also have to consider if he's a candidate to kick inside in the future. But based on what we saw last year with Brick and Breno, I feel alright with them as starters if another high quality player is added to start at OG. However, the team should draft a potential heir for at least one of the tackle spots as high as the 1st round in this draft.
We should certainly start looking for the LT of the future, but cutting Brick at this point in his career is foolish.
This will be an important decision by Mac because like others have said it's not easy to get a good vet starting LT but (to me) his performance has gone down. So not sure he's worth that salary. Also can they get a replacement without downgrading the o-line (something they don't want to do). They have money to spend and the o-line is an area that should be spent on.
Take Andrus Peat at #6. Start him immediately at RT- sending Guacamole, Idzik's stupid signing to the bench until D'Brick breaks down and/or becomes too expensive. In which case Peat will be groomed and experienced to step into the LT role. Good for the short term and the long term.
Pretty sure brick will take pay cut this year. Look for the jets to draft 2 OT's this year. I have them taking Dary WIlliams in the 2nd from Oklahoma and Rob Havenstein in the 5th from Wisconsin. WIlliams could start right away on the right side. Giacomini move to guard. Let Winters and Aboushi battle for the LG Spot. Brick would be a great mentor for Williams and Havenstein
do you have some secret hotline with the new GM? and PS: I think we keep him. linemen are a commodity.
LOL.. No just like scouting, and mock drafts. Its early I know that but just looking into next season and possible options
I can't believe we are looking at the end of Brick's career. It seems like yesterday when we drafted him and Nick.
Sure does. That was a really good draft for us. Brick, Mangold, Leon, Brad Smith ... even Eric Smith and Drew Colemen turned out to be useful as role players.
Not overly familiar with peat, but its not a bad idea @ 6 if he's 20I5 version of the 2006 Brick. He was a good pick and a good Jet. As for Brick, is he a right tackle tho? Those arms and frame...he doesn't seem like a road grader. I didn't look at the stats for 2013 & 2014, but to my eye, I don't recall us running left so much. Also, if we're going to make a change at RG, how about signing Mike Iupati.
Personally I would try to get Brick to take a pay cut and try to move him to left guard in the future. Otherwise I would then trade him if possible or cut him loose. If it comes to moving him I would do it now and take the hit rather than pushing our problems into future years.
