Don't really care about the players he chose, he's not here to be our GM, that being said those were definitely some shit picks lol.
They have to get that move right. The guy who sits in that seat will either lift or drag down the franchise for 3+ years. If he finds great players the Jets will rise and if he whiffs they'll fall.
The guy can also give him advice on how to run a team. When he selected Gabbert he had risen on team boards and was considered a very good Qb prospect. And he's only 25 and was the 49ers backup last season. So Harbaugh thought he can play. Plus Henne who is underrated was a good signing.
If Maccagganan wasn't a personell guy Id be concerned. But he isn't going to be influenced by Smith that much.
I am, too - I very clearly fall into the "optimistic Jets fan" category, and am happy regardless of whether or not Mac follows through on this hire. But this guy has me extremely skeptical - those quotes are intriguingly dumb reasoning, even if he's supposedly trying to be funny.
MacG has to learn the entire operation. But he's a smart guy who wanted to advance so I'm sure he's tried to learn not just the scouting but the business part of the job, etc. He will have to deal with the fans and press and if not better than John Idzik at that will be getting a real hard time. You would think that Woody made sure about after the anti-Idzik firestorm. It's a multi-faceted job and Smith can help him with specifics he might not be familiar with. Same with Bowles and Gailey. Chan has been a HC and can if Bowles has a good relationship with him assist him in those areas he has little experience with.
Yeah I would imagine a GMs job is more than just selecting players in the draft... As an assistant your more focused on one or two things not a hundred.
Mike Maccagnan is reportedly considering him for an "advisory" type role per Schefter. Step away from the ledge guys.
Alex Marvez was talking about a former GM last night on NFL XM radio. The person is obviously now not a GM. He was saying that if the person could do it all over again, he would hired a more experienced person (who had been a GM before) as an advisor when he got his first GM job. Maybe thats all this is; and its smart. Plus the 3 yrs of drafts listed don't look too bad
But why not someone better? Gene Smith was beyond horrendous with the Jags, so not even sure I want him in an advisory role, lol.
LMFAOOO he said this??? What is he smoking on? He picks players based on that?? Seems like he just wants a team that can avoid being on TMZ
What kind of advisory role? Would it involve donuts, coffee and other refreshments? Anything outside of that would be a problem.
