Boy...I sure miss Ronnie Lott. I think he was the last real hitter that the Jets' defense had. He made you pay for carrying the ball. Maybe asst. coach Brian Cox can suit up on Sundays ? All this Vilma talk, all I see is a soft tackler. I'm still waiting for his 1st bigg hit of the season or maybe of his career. McGhee of Buffalo runs over Vilma like he's the Lb. Vilma's lack of speed really shows on the pro level. Comparing him to the Ravens Ray Lewis is a joke & a insult to Ray Lewis. Ray Lewis clobbers ball carriers & inspires fear. Vilma...I'm still waiting to see him knock a ball carrier backwards, instead of being dragged down the field an extra 3 or 4 yds. Actually Barton is the Jets' best overall LB. And Hobson, if given a chance to play in the middle, can actually deliver a few licks. Actually, the Jets' have no (ZERO) bigg hitters on there (roster) defense, thats there biggest problem. The defense doesn't inspire fear or intimidation. The Jets' are just a bunch of nice collegegraduates. :martin: :breakdance:
Hey atleast Vilma's "horsecollar" penalty against Buffalo was pretty badass. If anyone on this defense is soft, its Bryan Thomas. Three straight runs against JAX and he just tapped the RB out of bounds. I wanna see him take a shot at someone, even if he gets a penalty. Our D plays with no heart and needs some fire.
Ronnie Lott is still my favorite Jet ever. Man he was what, 40 when he joined the Jets? Still the toughest SOB on that team. VG could lay alick too tho...
ROnnie Lott was a real big hitter in his career, and a HOF player. On the Jets however, he wasn't that great a player. He was basically done at that point.
Good thing he played for San Fransisco. I'm sure that's what you meant. But Vilma really shuts down the middle of the field in pass coverage. When teams get big plays, it's usually to the sidelines attacking the corners. I really don't expect Vilma to ever reach the elite for the reason that he's not a big hitter, and he won't be blowing up plays in the backfield, because he's not fast enough. Look for him rushing the passer, and defending the pass, because he's simply not a run stuffer. He doesn't have to be though, and shouldn't have to be surrounded by three guys who are 250+. Problem is, that our defensive line doesn't protect our linebackers, other then Ellis. There's a reason Ray Lewis hasn't been effective until now since 03'; they blocked him.
First off, Vilma has had a "bigg" hit, I believe it was on a kick-off against St. Louis his rookie year. And I'd rather have a MLB getting 180 regular tackles than a hard hitter who only makes 100. Barton is definatley a big hitter. They may not be highlight reel hits, but I remember several a game last year where he was mic'd up, and his hits were definatley audible. The commentators were saying that they were told by the running back he was going against ( I think it was vs. San Diego actually) that he is a solid, hard hitter. And to say that Vilma's lack of speed hurts him is just ridiculous. He is a very fast LB, and I actually think that he is too often too fast and overpursues.
At my work they have a full game-worn Lott uniform. I have been trying to figure out how to get it out without anyone noticing it...:breakdance: And Victor Green is a great guy. Met him in Atlanta last year.
Then the raiders must be rrrreally embarrased about putting this on their website.. http://www.raiders.com/History/hof_lott.jsp
Yep. For those that missed it: I knew exactly what I was doing in post 13 at 8:50pm eastern. The man played for Los Angeles- not Oakland.
