http://www.nj.com/jets/ledger/index.ssf?/base/sports-0/1160540736116660.xml&coll=1 I think it's nice that the Jets are giving Martin every chance to come back. He had a huge part in turning this franchise around.
Right, and it's costing them nothing... May as well see if he can make it back, and if not, IR him. They already restructured his deal that he only gets a minimum-ish salary if on IR all year.
I have mixed feelings about this. I'd hate to see Martin do himself serious and long-term damage, and that 'bone-on-bone' phrase always makes me shudder. I also doubt that he could be effective with the run blocking the Jets are currently getting. On the other hand, it would be great to see him back for one last hurrah, and if he produced the team would certainly benefit.
Slight correction; Martin was 100% cooperative in letting them restructure his deal as a true team player. There is never any BS with Martin - that's what I really like about him.
How is this a correction? it restates what I said. Restructuring a deal takes the cooperation of both sides... always does, always will
Hell, the damage is done.....if he wants to take the risk and try to come back who are we to criticize. Hopefully he doesn't make things worse this season....considering we're not actually a contender this year I don't want to see him getting beat up on the field.
I beleive the restructuring primarilly benifited Martin. Under normal circumstances if he goes to the IR and was never on the active roster he makes nothing (or close to it) Under the restrucured deal he gets a rather large buyout if he never makes the roster.
They're going to let him practice because Curtis wants a chance at getting back to the field, although I highly doubt the Jets will activate him in the 21 day period. I hate losing the roster spot, but if we're going to do it for anyone, I'm happy it's CMart.

Great, now we get to delay Leon Washington and Cedric Houston's development that much more. I don't want to see Martin on the field anymore. A great story if he can come back, but it's not helping the team. This is a rebuilding project, and having a 32 year old back who hasn't been healthy since 2004 taking away carries from young backs, isn't halping.
I like the fact that hes gonna start practicing...but a little depressing. The article makes it sound like Martin is getting sympathy. Thats not the Curtis Martin i know. He doesnt want sympathy. Thats not how he would want to go out.
"Upon his retirement, the Jets are expected to offer Martin a position within the organization or on the coaching staff." this is what i like to hear, he could, and probably will be a great coach.
On a further note. My gut tells me Martins days on the field are over. The knee injury and wear and tear n the knee were much mor serious than we will ever know. He may try, but I bet he does not get clearance to play. Can't fault him for trying though. You would expect that of Curtis.
Hopefully the team will rally from his presence back on the field. It would be great to see Curtis get another 1,000 yard season.
after watching the running game so far.... i think i took curtis for granted.. i really hope he can make a full comeback.
Guys said the same thing about Chrebet until he got rocked one last time and went blank for a few minutes. After that, it was "Wayne? Retire man.. Don't risk it.." I would like to see that kinda love be shown to Curtis Martin here. He has a entire life after football and to wake up hobbled by a chronic knee condition for the rest of his life just isn't fair to him. I think about Earl Campbell and all the other ex NFL'ers with physical issues no one wants to talk about. Lets just keep the Memory of Martin in our minds. His place in Canton is assured. There is absolutely NO REASON why he should come back at this point. No SB, no Playoffs, no Sanders record, Nada. I just don't think he should risk permanent pain every morning for a few last moments of glory..
