Why so many threads tend to assume that getting a vet and drafting a top QB this year are mutually exclusive. No matter which QB we draft, we should not, repeat should not start him this year. Have we learned nothing?
It's not just the Jets. It's the current state of the league. I agree that rookie Qbs should not start right away but it is so hard not to start them for coaches who are constantly playing for their jobs and teams who constantly need to prove instant success. After the jets go 3-13, if we get a top rookie Qb I bet he will end up starting during the season. There's too much pressure to have instant success.
There are no 'obvious' franchise qbs in FA or in the draft. There is no Manning/Luck/Brady/Brees/Rogers out there and thats ultimately what you want to shoot for in this passing league. I think its a mistake to take Winston/Mariota who at the end of the day will at best be average nfl starters (and at worst Geno Smith) and will cause the franchise to waste their time for a few years. Better to focus on taking draft picks that will be young projects, suck next year and then hopefully the following year we'll have better options at QB. So that means a hold the fort type player. Cutler is by far the best one out there. He is a significantly better qb than Bradford/RG3/Vick/Sanchez/Hoyer/Cousins. Yea, he'll lose a lot of games for your team, but then he'll actually single handedly win some too. Alternatively you take Hoyer cheaply and then really suck to get a great draft position the next year. RG3 is the only other player i'd consider in a franchise role that might be worth a gamble. I don't know. I think its better to suck hard for a few years, then wallow in mediocrity for a decade looking for a qb.
LOL at all these fans who put their noses up at Cutler. Guys if we have a top 20 quarterback in the league, then that's a major improvement. I think Bradford might be technically better, but his health concerns me. It seems like the Bears will basically be giving Cutler away anyway, and I'd rather not give up many draft picks for one of these guys. I guess that puts me in the Cutler camp unless something changes. We should also look to draft a QB in the mid rounds as well.
I agree that those are the most likely options for 2015...but I cringe at all of them...with the exception of Bradford...I guess.... Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Drop Vick and Smith, draft 2 pocket passers that have high completion percentages and have them compete with Sims for the starting quarterback. The gold is in the draft, not in the refuse of quarterbacks that have already proven they're no good. Never mind which round they draft them and never mind that they can run. Come back to earth, the best, year in and year out, teams have pocket passer quarterbacks.
I'm surprised no one has brought up Mike Glennon. I've always thought he was pretty decent and never got a fair shake in TB. He won't be needed if the Bucs draft a QB. Might be worth a 3rd round pick. The system won't let me post the link (something about likes to posts ratios), but I saw this online:
This seems like the best option to me. There's big risk concerning his injury history, but you acquire him with the intent of having him hold the fort until they can transition to a franchise QB. If you can get a healthy season or two out of him that would just be bonus!
If we sign a FA it will depend a lot on who is on the coaching staff and their relationship with players around the league which is a key reason why players sign with a team.

Geno will be our starter week 1 next season. Trading for or signing a veteran to try to go 7-9 with a first year coach would be absolute lunacy. Wins don't matter next season, it's a rebuilding year. If we can't draft a franchise QB and develop him next season, then go with a young guy again. 1-15 is a good outcome for 2015 if it nets us the #1 pick. Any discussion of Jay Cutler is so laughable I don't even know where to begin. I have to assume you are a Pats fan if you are talking Jay Cutler. But it shows the years of brain damage that have been done to the fanbase by our losing that it is even a discussion.
True indeed. However, I think that's where a strong, savvy coach and top notch OC can make all the difference. Take the time to groome the guy first, build confidence in the rookie and play him when he is ready. If we have a reasonable vet that should not be an issue. I can see that very issue with Manziel right now.
