We know the Jets don't get fazed by momentary losses of momentum. They snap right back after a fast TD by the other team. Now we get to see if they can hang in when they've been absolutely stomped early on.
This team has quit today and they have done so in the firat half. This is the worst display of Jets football since probably the Kotite years though maybe that Oak sunday nighter in '00 is up there.
we lost by some big scores but we weren't blown out from the start. we were down 10-0 vs. NE at the half, 13-3 at Miami at the half and 14-13 at the half at Jax. We were never down 28-0.
Damn. Rebuilding an O with a new Oline and virtually no running game and a predominatly 4-3 D playing 3-4 , Its going to be a hard long winter. Buckle up.
We wound up getting blown out but we were w/in a TD in the 4th qtr AND that was a team that was completely beat up w/ injuries not a healthy one like we have now
We wouldn't have been down 28-0 except for a really bad personal foul call on Vilma. Then we had a terrible personal foul call on Barton. Both of those moments could have been momentum turners that caused a more reasonable score and both got squashed by an idiot official. Normally I don't rail at the officials because I think they're doing the best they can but when you get two terrible calls in a row by the same guy I think bitching is warranted. As to the game itself, the Jets got outplayed on both sides of the field. Big deal. It's a rebuilding team and it's unreasonable to expect that they'd go into Jacksonville and manage to keep things close. If they'd done it I'd have been thrilled but I wasn't expecting it.
The announcers on the radio said those types of calls will take you out of the playoff crews because they're so bad.
What the hell did the ref say again on that play? "The defender came down with all his weight" or some bullshit like that? Whatever it was, it was complete bullshit - what was Vilma to do, levitate in the air after hitting the QB while he was throwing the ball? He didn't even freakin land on him. I'm not even going to talk about the Barton call (obviously rediculous). The refs were awful today, but the Jets were worse. There was nothing the refs could have done to make the Jets any better.
No, the first call on Vilma would have forced a punt by the Jags from the 1-fricking yard line. That would have turned into the best starting field position the Jets had all day. Football is a game of momentum and it does not take a lot to get a team pumped and moving if they catch a break. Don't get me wrong, the Jets weren't going to win this game regardless of how those calls went but a much closer result was definitely in reach.
The Vilma call was the right call and its called 99/100 times. Vilma lowered his shoulder and pounded the QB into the ground. It was a penalty and should have been a penalty. Vilma could either see or feel his arm throw the ball. At that point he simply cannot lower his shoulder and drive the QB into the ground. If it was a Jet QB people would be up in arms. The Barton call was a BS call. But it would not have been a safety as he was on the 1.5 yard line when the hit was intiated. But would have it really made a difference. I would much rather suffer a bad call on Barton when we had already lost the game and get 3 gift calls that hwlp us win us a game like with Tenn. Generally the calls and the bounces even out. But this year we have a had a lot more calls and bounces go our way than the other way.
The only good news about the game was that at least we didn't have any 2nd guessing this week, last week was a gut wrenching loss and a few decisions likely cost us the game whereas this week there were no such decisions that cost us the game and I do think we'll learn alot about this team next week. How do they handle this humiliation? Are they angry and come out fighting and more focused this week or do they stay in a funk?
There's no room to be in a funk with a first year coach. He's still deciding who plays and who hits the road in midseason or over the winter. The only guy I'm worried about right now is Vlima and that's only because he has never been in a position where he is overmatched down after down. Ray Lewis was in a much better position and wound up bitching loudly because he felt he had no support. Imagine how Vilma feels right now.
this was predictable...the Jags off an OT loss in Washington and the Jets almost pull one out against the Colts. So, how does Mangini handle it? Throw it away, burn the tapes, move ahead. Nothing was gained in the loss, so don't lose more than the game. I expect a spirited win next weekend!
That's a bad sign then, you are saying jax was mad about losing and we were content w/ staying close to Indy. I hope that isn't true.
