I would let Tom Gamble take over the operation as I don't want Harbaugh to become another Phil Jackson by spending most of his time on the west coast to keep wifey happy. I'm pretty sure a deal could be struck with the eagles as Gamble right now is VP of player personnel for them. Gamble certainly has the experience we need and the credibility amongst other FO's to actually get shit done via FA without the Idzik bullshit lowballing.
Not that I think Idzik's a scrub like he's made to be seeing how good of a financial situation we're in moving forward. If this is what it takes to get Harbaugh let him call the shots..I definitely trust Jim Harbaugh to find and hire a better GM than Woody Johnson.
He went to San Diego State and built them into a winner. He went to Stanford and built them into a winner, helping the career of Andrew Luck in the process. He went to San Francisco and until this year hasn't had a single season where he has failed to at least reach the Title Game. He played QB in the NFL and is one of the best offensive minds in the game. Jim Harbaugh is a program builder and Woody should do whatever it takes to get him here, if he wants to come, and let him do what he wants to do.
Let Harbaugh architect the whole franchise. No need to get cute and go after other guys first. Woody should be on a plane the day Harbaugh steps down or is let go (however the 9'ers wanna phrase it) and be at his front door. He's built that team and roster into one of the best and deepest in football. He can name the GM, President, scouting dept and staff.
Alright, let me put it this way. How many coaches in the league are also GM's? Why thank you, I do try.
I did probably come off as negative, which I didn't mean to do because he is a really good coach and he did an amazing job turning that team into a force to be reckoned with. And I would love for him to coach here is as well but to give him the GM position as well? No, he hasn't done anything to show he deserves it or can handle it.
I honestly do have some faith in Woody to make the right hire this time around,Because now we are a joke and he has no choice but to do something big to get the fans back on his side.Woody maybe a little weird but he isn't a complete idiot like most people think he is
I can't stand the idea of a HC having complete control. I want my HC to think about one thing and one thing only - winning the next game! And if my HC is only thinking about winning the next game then who is thinking about the future? I want a rock solid football organization that is capable of putting a winning team on the field 4 out of every 5 seasons - not for 4 or 5 seasons and then back into the crapper.
You don't want to be the guy who replaces "the guy"....the guy most likely to be successful is two hires away.
Yeah, I mean when John Gruden replaced Tony Dungy - shit no way would Gruden bring a SB to TB right!?
I would not give Harbaugh the keys to the castle, If Woody fires rex and Idzik then hire a GM. Instead of giving Harbaugh the blank check, they could hire the assistant GM of the Ravens and let him hire a HC. An organization that has specific roles for GM, player personnel, HC...etc, can be successful, but it has to be done correctly, hire the GM first and let him put his pieces in place. It's too much work for one man to handle, wearing all the hats.
You are wrong on the internet. Examples of why: Walsh to Seifert Landry to Johnson Noll to Cowher Cowher to Tomlin Madden to Flores Parker to Wilson Brown to Collier Billick to Harbaugh Those are examples of both coaches winning an NFL title. I am not even getting into examples like Dungy to Gruden where both had success but only one won a title (with Bucs in that example) or examples where both coaches had some success (Reid to Kelly in Philadelphia).
I love the idea of Harbaugh as coach but as far as complete control goes i'm not sure either way? I have to admit it would be an exciting hire either way it goes.
My vote is for Eric DeCosta - assistant GM to Ozzie Newsome. It would probably take a boatload of cash but he is the kind of rising star that I'd love to hitch my wagon to. A top GM is worth a hell of a lot more than a top coach imo.
The general conception is that in order to "trade" for Harbaugh it will take anywhere from a 2nd and two 3rds to as much as a 1st and two 2nds (the price the Buc's paid for Gruden). At least that's what anonymous GM's seem to be indicating in reports. Remember even if the 49er's fire him he's still under contract with them for next season so he'd have to sit out if no one trades for his rights. I think he's a great head coach, but is he worth that price? and if he is are fans going to be patient while the team goes through 2 seasons short on high draft picks to rebuild the team with?
