I've seen plenty of posts stating we should go after Hoyer (and I'm too lazy to look for them). I just read a story from Cleveland with this quote- "...Hoyer, the veteran with one touchdown pass against six interceptions to go with a brutal completion percentage (53%) in his last four games"... Seems to me that's comparable to some of Geno's periods of poor play and yet we continue to describe him as garbage and the worst QB ever. What would the amateur GMs in this group think if we spent big bucks on Hoyer- which we didn't do with Smith- and got basically the same results for our money while being locked into a large contract? Maybe the devil we know is better than the devil we might overpay for. http://www.cleveland.com/browns/index.ssf/2014/12/cleveland_browns_have_seen_bri.html
He gave Money Manziel some development time though I wouldn't mind Hoyer being decent to below decent while giving Mariota or Jameis the time they need to develop
Hoyer is what he is. He's a backup/stopgap that can start a game for you. But he's not a long term solution. If we draft a qb next year having a guy like Hoyer hold the fort until the rookie is ready is fine in my book.
If he takes a Mike Vick type contract I'd gladly bring him in if there's no ties after 2015. Let him, Geno and our rookie compete for the job next year if we don't land Mariota or go the controversial RG3/Winston routes.
What I liked about Manziel in the clips I saw of yesterday's game was the same dynamic you saw of him in NCAAF. He uses his legs to make big plays. He kind of reminds me of RG3 two years ago. Do you think it will end up the same way for him. Anyways, these temporary regressions of Qbs seem to be happening a lot. Like Kyle Orton went into a slump after a good stretch. Yesterday on the NFL Today Bart Scott said he thinks that Alex Smith is better than Kapernick. And that the 49ers went with the wrong Qb. Well, you know Bart wants to say something controversial. I guess in his role they expect that of him. Anyways, I think that Hoyer would be a good fit for the Jets because he knows how to play the position. I would go with him and Geno next season. There's enough inconsistency at the Qb position that you don't have to give up your entire draft and cap to get a serviceable QB. And put our money into the lines.
Hoyer would be an upgrade here. But you could say that about 35 active QB's as well. Im surprised he's shit the bed since Gordon came back though and they found a nice RB in Crowell. Weird how he was decent with Miles Austin as his best WR. So yeah kinda sounds like Geno.
I'd still take him for like 5 or so million a year on an incentive laden 2-3 year deal. he's a stopgap and not likely a long term answer but we NEED a stop gap and he wants to be a starter, its a good fit, coach pending.
He would end up like RG3. Once teams get tape on him he won't look as good. We see it all the time the back up comes off the bench and shines until people game plan for him.
Watch tonight's game. After you watch how badly Geno Smith plays tonight you should come back to this thread and apologize to Brian Hoyer.
To me, the Jets are in a very difficult situation going forward at the QB position. Forget what's in place now. Neither QB on the roster is worth salvaging for the long or short term. This offseason they absolutely have to find a guy that can still win games, while holding the fort until whomever they draft is ready. I have mentioned the Vinny/Chad dynamic before and it's no accident that it was a successful transition. Vinny could still play at a high enough level that if he struggled for a game, or 2, the calls for Chad didn't escalate to a roar. Once Herm made the change, Chad wasn't a rookie thrown into the proverbial fire. The timing was perfect - the team was struggling, and needed a spark and Chad provided one. Unfortunately, Chad's health betrayed him after not too long. But, the process of how he was brought along is the better way to go, IMO. On a side note. Unless he has zero interest in the job, would it hurt to bring Chad in as QB coach next season to help provide insight?
I think kapernick is greatly overrated myself. I see too many geno mistakes, yet we curse smiths name. Not that im saying smith is good. The niners wouldnt even be in the playoff conversation if not for their defense. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-N900A using Tapatalk
Thats not just the key for the jets, but the I stated in another, that qbs in the nfl arent being brought along properly as a whole and the league is suffering because of it. I think there are a few great qbs and too many rules that favor the offense, and because of this, the poor qb play doesnt really get noticed as well as it should, except in big market media teams......such as ours. Cleveland doesn't have great talent. As for Gordon he's just played in 2 games. Hoyer loves Cleveland but he might not want to stay there if Johnny is the starter. The Jets should go back to a ground and pound but if we can select one of the top receivers like the Alabama guy I'd be all for it. Re-signing Percy isn't a done deal either.
I'd go o-line in the first or second round 3 drafts in a row if necessary. Look at the improvement in the Cowboys' line after they passed on the flashy names like Manziel. They picked a RG, C and LT and all 3 have started since day one. IMO the reason Vick sucks as bad as Geno is he has NO time to survey the field and make a reasonable decision. I don't think Aaron Rogers could win with the time he'd get to throw here, and Peyton would've been on IR long ago.
wouldn't go THAT far, those Qb's are still bad or good on their own merits, but investing in the trenches isn't a horrible idea and a good O-line makes even mediocre QB's workable to an extent. touted QB's are nice, but it takes a great support system to optimize their value. even the few that can manage without a good line aren't at their best while doing so. a good OT might be as valuable as a good young Qb that way. part of hoyers earlier success had to do with having a good O-line. drafting a quality OT in the first after signing him isn't a bad reality for us if it happened. ideally we manage to snag both a blue chip QB and OT next year.
Should be interesting to see what the Browns are going to do in the offseason with their QB situation. I get the feeling Hoyer and Manziel won't both be there. Someone's got ta go, and I have a feeling it ain't gonna be Mr. Football.
