You play the game to win...Herm was right.

Everything I do in life , I do the the best of my ability....there is no second best or throwing in the towel.

Problem is rooting for your team to lose doesn't guarantee anything. I follow the draft as close as anyone here and trust me tanking doesn't improve your chance to get that superstar player, especially in this upcoming draft.

I understand the majority of us here are Jet Fans and are invested in our team. I just have no tolerance for someone who states they're a fan and and doesn't want their team to win.....it goes against the fabric of competition and the reason you suit up every week.

There still some posters that come on to this site to stir the pot and aren't necessarily Jet Fans.

Anyone that wanted the Dolphins to beat the Jets should be taken to the backyard and shot right away.

There are different kinds of fans. I'm 32 with a bad memory so in 10 years I won't remember who won what was a meaningless game for the Jets vs Miami, but if we hit on our draft pick we will remember Amari Cooper or Marcus Mariotta. We've pummeled the Dolphins plenty over the years.

Personally I would like to see the Jets win but I'm not that mad when they lose in a lost season. That's my thought.

I agree you follow the draft as closely as anyone here. Name one draft in history where an argument could be made that the top 10 picks turned out to be collectively less impactful than the bottom 10 picks of the same first round?

No way am I trading up for a QB. Name one time that has worked for a team?

We need our picks, if anything we trade back abd get more picks.

If Mariota is gone I'm going Cooper. If he is somehow gone I'm taking the best OL available. You can always find a QB in a draft, just because they are top prospects doesn't mean they'll pan out.

Aaron Rodgers who in my opinion is the best QB in the league was taken towards the end of round 1. We all know Tom Brady, taken in the 6th. Russell Wilson was a 3rd round pick. Tony Romo went undrafted. There are no guarantees in the NFL Draft.

In most drafts about half (16) of the picks in Rd 1 (32) end up being starters. The other half are busts or never develop as starters (Kyle Wilson) and become journeymen. The chances are better that you will get a starter in the top 10 than the bottom 10, but nothing is certain.

There have been some excellent players drafted late in rd 1......Mo Wilk is a prime example.

IMO, wanting to lose you games to move up to draft a player almost always is a bad idea. I like Mariota, but he is not a lock to be the next great QB. The only player I would have considered wanting the #1 pick in the last 20 years was for Andrew Luck.

I'll disagree here somewhat, and not to stir the pot. I do hope the Jets lose out, I make no qualm about that. For me as a fan there is nothing left in this season other than draft slot, and not so much for the first round pick but the improved position of later round picks where guys who should have gone the previous round are still on the board at value.

That said, I was excited when the Jets looked like they were going to beat the fins, but I'm not disappointed that they lost either. The reason I was excited was the game showed the players were playing to win, regardless of what one thinks of the game plan.
While I do hope the Jets lose out on one hand, I expect the players to play to win the game. I expect the coaches to play to win the game. Any player or coach who isn't playing to win the game has no place on the team. If I were a player and suiting up I'd give my full regardless and I expect the players to, they are after all getting paid to do a job and they're also working to keep their jobs, they'd better be busting their butts.

But, as a long term and long time fan I want the Jets to have the best choice of players when their turns come to draft in order to build a better future team. Of course, that is dependent on the Jets front office making the right choices.
At no point does it feel good to lose, it sure didn't on Monday. But losing a meaningless game or 4 at the end of a losing season means nothing in the long term, yeah it stings for a week or so, especially if the loss was like Monday. But in 46 years of being a Jets fans I've seen a lot of meaningless wins and losses at the end of losing seasons....I don't remember a single one of them, unless it was for a chance to be .500. I do however remember all those losing seasons, and each and everyone of those stings to this day.

The problem with your premise of "losing out", it doesn't mean anything, unless we draft the "right player" and they're not a bust. Players have been draft at # 1 & 2 and have been busts and drafted at #3 and 4 and have been successful.

I know it's difficult rooting for a 2-10 team, but I can't root for them to lose.

This is true, and like you I'm not mad when they lose in a lost season either - but still, I'm not actively rooting for them to lose like some of the fans here. We win we win, we lose we lose - but I want to see my team out there playing hard and trying their best.

In order for us to hit on this pick - the coaching staff / front office needs to be revamped.

True, and that was addressed. But like I said, I won't remember Mondays game, the loss stings now but I also know that the only thing I'll remember is the only game i remember from 2012...okay that's alie, 2012 had the buttfumble so that one is impossible to forget. I remember the tail end of last year because the Jets had a chance to reach .500, and did. It took some luck and stupid mistakes by other teams, but the team got to .500.
As for choosing the "right player", at least they have the choice to get the player...last year there were droppers that the Jets FO missed, that's clear. But I can safely say that you can't choose "the right player" if he came off the board the pick before you.

I assume you avoid the question because you either believe there is no such draft that could reasonably meet the criteria I gave or you're not sure if one exists and don't feel like digging through the last 20 drafts to see if something crazy happened one time or not. Can't say I blame you, it would be a lot of work to put into your indefensible position.

If you're trying to predict any given player, sure they can boom bust or anything in between. But some players are likelier than others to succeed and some players have higher ceilings. That's completely obvious. Why would you study the draft so much if draft order didn't matter? You might as well close your eyes and randomly select from the entire pool of players that enter the draft if you really believed that, but of course you don't.

Averages being averages, the top prospects win out in the end when the sample size becomes big enough. And draft order doesn't just come into play in the 1st round, you get to pick higher in every round which is still quite a significant advantage in rounds 2-3 so even if a highly valued 1st rounder doesn't work out the team could still easily make up for it with a gem in the 2nd or 3rd that wouldn't have been there at a later pick.

You can claim that rooting against your team under any circumstances is against the spirit of being a fan, and sure that's a perspective, but it isn't the only one. But to claim that people on the other side of the argument have no basis because drafting earlier isn't an advantage is completely illogical and absurd.

Excellent post. Above sentence is the key. I don't want to see Jets lose at all. It pains me. But this year, when we are 2-10, I don't want them to win meaningless games that will cost us a good draft position. We are 2-10 for God's sake. Who cares if they win again this year. We are a joke already.

Sacrificing a few weeks of misery & media bashing in worthless games is worth it if it means a bright future for your team .. Not necessarily being a bad fan.. At least IMO. Screaming "lets go lose jets" is stupid though, im just like if we win F- it, if we lose... "How'd mariota do this week?"

I as well see both sides of the argument. I don't want the Jets to lose any game, even in this meaningless season, I'm not sad if they lose either. It does help move up in the picking order, which is an advantage, It's a proven advantage. That is why the system is set up the way it is, if you are a bad team, the NFL wants that team to have every chance at becoming better so they grant you first pickings based on your overall standing which dictates how good of a team you are. Winning games when we are clearly a team that needs to revamp this roster with talent, needs all the advantage they can get. You also have to factor in a season like last year, we had no business winning 8 games last year, it hurt us in the draft and schedule this year.

So I see both sides of this argument. I only think the people that are rooting for us to lose are in the wrong, you should never do that. This is your team, be loyal, stand up and root for them despite the season or record. That's what I do, that's what we should all do, we should be supportive of this team no matter what.

Why do we want to root for the overall number one pick? None of those prospects will help Jets turn to Super Bowl contender next year. They are just names, my friends.

For the same reason the Colts sucked for Luck (or at least some fans rooted for them to do so). I don't think Mariota will be Luck but if you believe he can be our franchise Qb, they are not just names. Our first round pick could very well be franchise altering.

Also, it's not about next year. The Jets will likely not be contending next year nor even the year after. At this point, unfortunately, we're playing for 2017 or 2018. That's what happens when you have to fire a coach and (likely) a GM.

WR, OLB and even OL could be franchise altering as well.

Of course. But you have to admit that a franchise QB would be more franchise altering than an elite player at any of those positions. The question then becomes: do we believe any Qb this year will be a franchise player? If not, go ahead and pick BPA

Yes, qb position holds high regards.

The problem is that you finally hold the overall #1 pick, hinting a quarterback at the end of the season and then you found out there was no quarterback to be worth of top pick during an evaluation period. You may have to settle down with WR or OLB as a top pick. That is not good. OT could be best alternative to QB but we want an offensive skill position.

I don't mind sucking up for #1 if our QB and LT both suck big time. It sound much better than just QB.
