I know you get 53 players on the active roster. However, how does it work on game day. Do you have to get down to less players? The reason I ask this is because there are inactives every week. Could someone please explain. P.S. How many players are on the practice squad now. I know is been getting larger.
Teams are permitted an Active List of 45 players and an Inactive List of eight players for each regular season and postseason game. Provided that a team has two QBs on its 45-player Active List, a third QB from its Inactive List is permitted to dress for the game, but if he enters the game during the first three quarters, the other two QBs are thereafter prohibited from playing. Teams are also permitted to establish Practice Squads of up to eight players who are eligible to participate in practice, but these players remain free agents and are eligible to sign with any other team in the league.
Also with the practice squad teams in the NFC East and AFC North are allowed to carry one extra player (so 9 in total) as long as the 9th player is part of the International Development Practice Squad program. (i.e. one foreign based player)
Why didn't the Jets just put Teague on the PUP to start the regular season? He'd be eligible to come off the PUP after week 6. I guess he may be recovering slower than they thought, but it seems to me he really won't be on the field until week 6 anyways.
Hence in 1999, when testanerdy went down with the achilles, and they threw in Tupa as QB, they weren't able to replace him with a real QB.
