He is glad he never played for the Jets (Photo by: George McNish) Print By Darryl Slater | NJ Advance Media for NJ.com Follow on Twitter on November 04, 2014 at 8:34 AM, updated November 04, 2014 at 9:32 AM Former Patriots quarterback Drew Bledsoe didan ESPN Radio interview Monday with Colin Cowherd. He was asked about Mark Sanchez getting a chance to start for the Eagles, because of Nick Foles' broken collarbone. Specifically, Cowherd opined that he didn't think the Eagles were downgrading by going to Sanchez. Cowherd asked if Bledsoe agreed. And Bledsoe launched right into this: "You know, I'm just so damn happy for Mark Sanchez. I mean, going to play quarterback for the Jets, it's kind of like you know when they used to like take the pretty young virgin up to the edge of the volcano and just throw 'em in? That's kind of what it is when you play quarterback for the Jets. It just feels bad. "And Mark had to live with that for a long time, and people threw him under the bus, like he was the whole reason for the demise of the Jets. Now to see him be able to come onto the field in a good system with good talent (in Philadelphia) and perform well, I'm just really happy for him. And that's in no way to indicate that I think he should be the guy ahead of Nick Foles. I think Nick Foles is a really good player, and when he's back, he'll be the starter there. But I was just really excited to see Mark Sanchez get to play in a good system with good talent and show that he really is a high-quality football player." Cowherd didn't ask a follow-up question to this volcano line, and instead moved on to talking about the Seahawks. If you want to hear Bledsoe's volcano/virgin comments, they're at about the four-minute mark of this audio clip. For his part, Jets coach Rex Ryan said Monday he was "proud of" Sanchez as he gets another chance with the Eagles. The Jets drafted Sanchez fifth overall in 2009. He committed 26 turnovers in both 2011 and 2012. So while Bledsoe's point about the Jets not doing enough to develop Sanchez or surround him with talent (at least that's what we think he was saying) has some validity, Sanchez is not without blame for the Jets' struggles in his final two years playing for them. Bledsoe played 22 games against the Jets in his 14-year NFL career with the Patriots, Bills and Cowboys. Bledsoe's teams went 9-13 in those games. He completed 55.7 percent of his passes for 21 touchdowns and 29 interceptions against the Jets. Darryl Slater may be reached at dslater@njadvancemedia.com. Follow him on Twitter @DarrylSlater. The part I really got a kick out of was - him quickly saying that in no way does he mean that Sanchez should be the guy ahead of Foles and that once Foles is back he'll be the starter. I wonder why he said that so quickly.. .hmmmm. Maybe something left a bad taste in his mouth? lol
Would be nice to see Sanchez go out on Monday and throw 2 pick 6's. I think people forgot how bad he was with no offense around him and how average he was with a decent offense around him. Nothing against him personally but people sure love shitting on the Jets. When he was here he sucked now he's not here so he's great? Makes sense.
If Sanchez becomes a decent QB, there'll be alot more folks talking about the Jets like this. I'm not much of a Sanchez fan, but you have to wonder how differently things might have shaken out if Rex doesn't get him hurt by needlessly playing him with the 3rd stringers in preseason last year. If Sanchez carries the water for at least another year while Geno learns the pro game? Maybe things pan out the same way...?
He didn't suck here. He had one god awful year when we were signing guys off the street that started the following Sunday. He wasn't the next Montana or Unitas but he was a lot better than he's given credit for and people tend to forget how awful the talent around him was in his worst season... A season which by the way we still won 6 games. With much better talent this year we'll be lucky to win 5 games. I wish we had Sanchez this year instead of Vick / Geno.
Or maybe Geno rides the pine as Sanchez actually improves with a legitimate Offensive Coordinator. Who by the way is unfairly getting murdered by Jets fans considering he's had an inept QB that he's been forced to play.
The downfall of this team began when the Jets chose Santonio Homes and Tim Tebow over Braylon Edwards. They had a good thing going here and the leadership of this franchise blew it big time. I agree with Bledsoe completely. Also agree with Lang that things could've turned out differently. Rex's infatuation with Holmes is probably the thing I dislike most about his tenure with the Jets, especially considering his lack of overall input into the offensive scheme.
I like Mark, but let's see how things play out now that teams will be game planning for him and not Foles...
'SOMEONE', is still pissed it was his demise that gave rise to the Pats messiah. Sad old bag of piss.
I think the horrible play from Geno this season has made a lot of fans forget just how awful Mark was for most of his tenure here. Here's a thought. Put our current defense and run game on a team with Sanchez at QB. Scary thought right?
Just for the record how can anyone listen to Herd? He is completely obnoxious...that voice, that pompous, arrogant, self-important way about him. The way he pontificates about sports that he hardly knows anything about. Always trying to give life advice, trying too hard to be hip and funny. The elitist attitude toward everything. The guy is completely unlistenable.
Ignoring the offensive line, promoting wayne hunter to starter (and giving him a bonus), failing to see Shonn Greene as a great #2 running back, but not a premier back, bringing in the "leadership" skills of Plaxico Burress. The front loaded contracts (Holmes) 100% reason why we were unable to keep Revis (side note, FUCK Revis). This year completely ignoring the running game and playing the entire offense from shotgun, not using personnel properly (Powell vs. Johnson), promoting moral victories instead of just victories. Don't care what anyone here thinks though, the Jets are a hated franchise (many reasons deserved). Can't play against two teams though, bad officiating cost us early in the season. Still rock my Jets gear and crush in fantasy football, NFL=WWE whack fucking favoritism, rigged mother fucking league.
How Sanchez dealt with his situation here is a subject we can debate ad nauseum, and in fact already have. Heh. I would in his favor certainly agree that it can really hurt a young Qb to require too much of him, and don't want to see the Jets do that again with a rookie Qb next year. But I don't recall Sanchez complaining he was the starter his rookie year, either. More to the point I have to assume Bledsoe does not like the Jets for obvious reasons, and is merely piling onto their 1-8 season. He is an interested party, and not in a good way. You have to take that into account.
And Bledsoe is a fucking asshole too...yeah dude Sanchez had it so bad in New York. He was bangin Kate Upton and god knows what other hot chicks, getting paid great money, was on the front cover of GQ...he had the world by the balls and played like shit. Throw me into that volcano any goddamn day of the week. What ridiculous analysis "sacrificing a virgin" ayfkm?
I don't believe Sanchez is a good decision maker to begin with. I also think his decision making gets dramatically worse when he starts to get hit or feels pressure. Maybe Chip Kelly's offense helps with his decision making but it won't surprise me at all if he starts getting hit and making really poor decisions.
What does Drew Bledsoe know about playing quarterback for the Jets, anyway? He played for the Pats, Bills, and Cowboys. He should probably STFU.
