Since a 1-7 season is one way to kill a Jets forum, why don't we talk about someone who gives me hope about the future of this offense: Jace Amaro. So far this season, as Geno Smith continues to play poorly and Michael Vick ignores him, Amaro has played like a very capable starting tight end. In fact, statistics say that he ranks among the best in rookie TEs of the past decade, and he passes the eye test. Amaro is constantly open, his blocking is improving, and though he makes some dumb drops he has an 82% catch percentage. I think he can be a foundation of our offense for years to come if everything falls into place. Let's delve into stats for a little bit. If we extrapolate his current stats to get to 16 games, look at this comparison (vs. the rookie seasons of notable TEs over the past decade): Jace Amaro: 570 yds, 2 TDs, 64 rec, 78 tgts, 82% catch pct, 8.9 yds/c Rob Gronkowski: 546 yds, 10 TDs, 42 rec, 59 tgts, 71% catch pct, 13.0 yds/c Jimmy Graham: 356 yds, 5 TDs, 31 rec, 44 tgts, 70% catch pct, 11.5 y/c Jason Witten: 347 yds, 1 TD, 35 rec, 54 tgts, 65% catch pct, 9.9 y/c Heath Miller: 459 yds, 6 TDs, 34 rec, 55 tgts, 62% catch pct, 11.8 y/c Antonio Gates: 389 yds, 2 TDs, 24 rec, 42 tgts, 57% catch pct, 16.2 y/c -- AND, Amaro is putting up those numbers in less than 40% of the team's snaps (http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/snapcounts) - pretty incredible in an offense likes ours. Watch Amaro closely in our next blowout loss (next week). He will get open quite a lot; though Vick for some reason ignored him last week even though he was open, I have very, very high hopes for this kid.
Doug Jolley and Mike Nugent was definitely a better combo over Heath Miller (who apparently "wasnt worthy of a 1st rd grade" ) but yes, Amaro has potential
I'm still laughing from Rich Gannon's quote from Sunday's game. To paraphrase it a bit: "Jace Amaro is the primary option on all these plays and he's wide open. I don't know if Vick just doesn't like throwing him the ball or what but he's passing up the top option on these pass plays."
I noticed Amaro open a lot last sunday when Vick was in. I hope after a week of practices and starting game tape he will look to the TE more.
Wasn't Amaro called for holding on two plays in that drive in the 3rd quarter after Vick got 1st downs and the Jets were still in the game. IMO Jace should have been benched for his undisciplined play and as a statement to his other players. But he is a good receiver and should be getting a lot of attention in the passing game.
Hopefully Vick will have spent a long time looking at the tape, and maybe we'll see some production from Amaro on Sunday.
My least favorite Jet draft of all time..WHAT a punch in the gut after that Doug Brien disaster. I don't know this for a fact..BUT i believe the reason why the Jets opted for Jolley over heath Miller is b/c Miller failed his physical w/ team A couple days before Miller's pre draft visit, rumblings started that Miller had been failing some medical tests due to a bad (back?). Wouldn't you know the Jolley trade happened the day after Miller's visit. That could be circumstantial..but I have a feeling it was not. Who the hell would choose a healthy Doug F'n Jolley over Heath Miller the draft prospect(The answer to this question scares me!.Course he falls right into the damn Steelers lap. That said..it was a pretty crappy draft & while Heath was solid he was far from franchise altering.
The wide open drops have been a problem, but he's done a very nice job. And considering he's doing so well with stinking pile of garbage at the QB position makes it even more impressive.
The same guy that thought DeWayne "cant nobody block me!" robertson was worth 2 firsts and a 4th rd pick in the draft, and that Bryan Thomas was better than Ed Reed (2 years after they drafted 2 DEs in the 1st rd) and some how is still in the JETS scouting dept. BOO!
I'm just amazed that with Amaro available as a split TE and CJ for bubble screens and Ivory to keep teams honest up the middle that the offense hasn't been more productive. This should be a hard team to defend, given the multiplicity of talented players who can cause matchup issues. With the addition of Harvin the Jets have gone over the top in that area so if we keep seeing problems, not sure what that means. One over-riding impression that I'm left with of Geno's play is that he's really not good at reading a defense pre-snap. It seems like every time he got excited and walked around changing the play it turned into a run, usually to the right side, and the run usually got stuffed. Not sure what he was looking at when he made the change.
Exactly... If we had the coaching staff smart enough to see that Jace is the better TE than Cumberland and a competent QB, I could see Jace could have ~700 yards and 10 TDs. He's got the talent and those drops hopefully will go away as he gets more time in the offense.
Imagine we had a real QB to get him the ball, with Peyton throwing himm the ball he might be a hall of famer, with a Jets QB throwing him the ball his carrer will be ruined and he will end up working at a coat factory 3 years after we cut him
and the jets never run this elite drag plays that would help Geno tremendously. Where the back comes out on a delay and all Geno has to do is look first read, if it is not there, dump it to the back. MM does not use his RBs in passing well at all.
10 TDs to one player is not realistic with Geno Smith as the QB. Even for half the season. Michael Vick sounds like he doesn't care, so I wouldn't expect him to do much better.
