Idzik got Harvin now because now is when Harvin became available and because his contract is a good value right now.
Also Hawks won a Super Bowl they are gonna get the benefit of the doubt. Especially because the media thinks that Idzik is retarded. I would think the reality of the situation is somewhere between what media is saying and the spin jets fans are trying to put on it. However I just wish that for once someone could give the Jets credit for something. Idzik blew the offseason CB. Doesn't mean he hasn't made good signings of Decker and trades for Ivory and hopefully Harvin.
whatever Seattle's reasons were for moving him this season, it is low risk from the Jets perspective. just not sure how much immediate impact he can have. Has to get acclimated to the coaches, players, and the complex playbook. hopefully special teams at minimum gets that immediate boost. i can't even look when we field punts. on offense, may take till after bye week to get in the swing of things. if this season ends up in the toilet, i'm still firmly on the fire Idzik bandwagon. while i appreciate trying to do something this season, it is definitely too little too late.
the worst thing about this is that it has confirmed that my faith in the organization is now so shot that whenever they do (finally) make a move I just automatically assume its the wrong one.
I wouldn't say Idziks job is "Super Safe" if we finish 2-14 or even 4-12 Idziks gonna be on the hot seat more then you think being that its mostly his fault to begin with

The timing of this deal is idiotic. Why piss away $7.1M of roll over cap space in a season that's already over? Throw in the $10.5M base salary you have next year and you are using $17.6M in cap space to have Percy Harvin on your team in 2015. Or if you cut him like some are saying you can do because there's no guaranteed money, you just pissed away $7.1M for a guy to play out the string in a 1-6 season. That's likely even worse. Should've waited until after the season to pursue Harvin and if the Seahawks took him off the block, move onto a bunch of other free agents with that $17.6M in cap space. You can't convince me that $17.6M on Percy Harvin is the best use of cap space out there for Idzik and the Jets. It is a horrible use of cap space, as much as I like Harvin as a player, and makes it seem like Idzik has no plan/is waffling on his plan due to media pressure.
Can someone more well-versed in league-wide salary figures let me know which teams had the capacity to REALISTICALLY 1) Trade for the $6.5 mil Harvin is owed this year 2) Not have any issue keeping him at his $10.5 figure next year (or whatever the hit is)

The obvious answer to your angst is that you don't like Harvin that much as a player. If you really liked him, then none of your points would be relevant.
If Harvin is on the Jets in 2015, the Jets will have spent $17.6M in cap space to get him on the team between the $7.1M in roll over money owed to him the rest of the year, and the $10.5M base salary he has. If he's not on the team, they just pissed away $7.1M in cap space for him to play 9 games for them in a season they are 1-6 in. How either one of those options make perfect sense is beyond me. Both options are very poor cap management.
I don't like Harvin so much that I would give up $17.6M in 2015 cap space to acquire him, that is accurate. That doesn't mean I don't think he's a damn good player who will produce significantly more than he did in SEA, it just means at that price I think he's an extremely poor value.
Paying Revis on a one year rent for 12M while the cap hit the year after is 20M if you wanna keep him sounds like good cap management?
Since you're a Pats fan, I'm just curious. If Belichick made this exact same trade (6th rounder for Percy Harvin... possibly escalating to a 4th rounder), how do you think the media would react? Whether or not it's good for the cap, don't you think the most common response would be: "Wow, Brady finally has a playmaker. Belichick is a genius, trading away just a 6th round pick for a potential 1st-round talent. What a great move, and I'm sure the Patriots Way will ensure that Percy never has any off-the-field problems!"
