They're doing a shitty job if building through the draft is going to be their philosophy. Woody better get some real talent evaluators in here because the Jets war room is weak.
I loved how hands on Woody made it sound he was in managing the team. Well, not really, because he obviously knows less about football than most posters here. But let's be clear, it all starts with him. Think about is comments about Smith. If you put aside the Chadster, who after all was hurting most of his time with the team after a promising start (and imo his health problems should have led the FO to find a replacement for him a lot sooner than they did), and the one year deal with Favre - never intended to be more than a temporary solution (although it did allow for a clean break with Chadley), the Jets have not had a decent Qb the whole time Woody has been the owner. (Should I mention Quincy Carter here? I liked him very much, but he was damaged goods already when the Jets picked him up, so imo he does not count.) Chad and Favre are exceptoins for the obivious reasons that Chad was picked by the holdover Parcells people, and Favre was an FA signing of a talent even a football know nothing like Woody knew was a great player. But all others, especially picked through the draft, have sucked. Now to be clear I am not blaming Woody entirely. I just have to laugh when he starts evaluating Qb's. He doesn't know what he's talking about.
To be honest, what talent have we developed on the offensive side of the ball in the past 15 years? Moss left, Coles left and came back after he was washed up. If we intend to build through the draft we can't have 75% of them cut in year 1! I'm so very dissapinted with the receivers we drafted this year when it was a historically deep draft. I love what Jacksonville did with Lee and Robinson. There was just way too much talent out there to not draft a receiver sooner....if that's our philosophy and all....
But at the end of the day Champ, He's not only rich and ugly, but the New York Jets are his property to do with as he pleases AND he was lucky enough to have been the progeny of the uber Rich. He can run this franchise into the ground, shit on the 50yd line or keep Rex as HC until a manned Mars landing. They're all his choices to make and the reality is, we as fans only count as long as we buy the swag and fill the seats. Other than that, we might as well be something Woody stepped in on the way to the golf club.
Unfortunately, this is the truth of the matter. Why should we expect some dork who was born with a giant platinum spoon in his mouth and never had to earn anything in life to be able to make sound decisions when it comes to running a football organization? I just don't see the Jets ever getting it together under this privileged douchebag of an owner. Winning franchises tend to have owners who, even if they're not 'football guys', at least have a genuine passion for the game and seeing their team win. Woody so obviously doesn't give a fuck that it's sad. Shit trickles downhill...
Rex is the perfect coach for Woody Johnson. First, he's everything that Johnson is not: big personality, likable, loud and has "everyman qualities"... Also it's obvious Johnson wants to build a brand and a persona around his franchise and their probably isn't another coach more suited for that on this earth than Rex. The Jets will always look the same under Rex Ryan. They will always be brash. They will always have the very recognizable attacking defense. They will always have a quarterback controversy of some degree (which like it or not - SELLS). They will always be in the news. All of that though has nothing to do with football. Woody Johnson will always say he is about the game and winning of course but I think that's definitely second fiddle. Naturally, all things considered he'd rather see his brand win, but I do think he wants to win a certain way only. And that way involves a "brand". Like he feels more comfortable building a team that resembles the Kardashian's (win or lose) than he does building one that just wins: boring and methodically. It's like he is living his little fantasy and we all suffer on sundays as a result.
I agree completely. I would merely add I see nothing that suggests any improvement in his handling of the team over the years. His press conf just yesterday was merely the latest example of how he has no clue. He just went out there to try and put some positive spin on the current controversy, without indicating he has any better idea what's going on than the most stupid posters on this board. It kills me to think it, and I really am fighting hard to avoid the conclusion I draw from it, but I think the Jets will not, essentially cannot, win an SB while he is the owner. Sure the Jets came close in 09 and 10, so there is that. But I see them right now as pretty far from that point and not about to change it to head in the right direction.
I hear you. I read here and there analyses of why the Jets should fire Ryan. What those people don't realize is that Woody has the view of Rex that you explain, and that's more important than any recognition that the Jets have declined while Ryan has been HC. Doesn't matter to Woody as long as what you describe continues. Having said that if the fanbase turns on Ryan, so will Woody. But it was not that long ago the fans were cheering for his return in the last home game last year.
