So far we have lost 3 games in a row all by a TD against 3 playoff caliber teams and real franchise QBs.There's a few ways to look at these losses ,are we closer then we think?our are we grasping at straws and staring down an epic losing season .I feel like we are on the brink of getting it together. If we can stop the stupid penaltys and Geno can put together a turnover free game I don't see why we can't beat anyone. The redzone problems need to go away, and if you look at the tape when we are in the red zone there are actually guys open but Geno doesn't pull the trigger and the game looks to fast for him in that area.It really isn't Martys fault The Packers Loss-We all know how this went down ,we had an 18 point lead that got blown thanks to Rodgers and our defense.Geno threw an epic TD on 4th n 4 to tie the game that was negated due to penaltys ,a INT in Packers territory was also negated by penalty. But this game was the best Geno looked all year and it was on the road.Maybe being on the road this week away from the fans at Metlife will help him get back on track. There's no doubt we should have won this game ,we need to control the clock more on offense and run the ball more and maybe we keep our lead in this one The Bears Loss-Another heartbreaker ,Major redzone problems and Genos red one turnover and the negated fumble TD def cost us the win I'n a game where the Bears did not outplay us.The Saunders fumble was a major part of the loss.Once again we had a chance to win the game but couldn't convert the 4 the down. Not having Decker def hurt us here but another game we lose by a TD. The Lions Loss-The worst loss by far and this time there's blame to go around. The defense gives up a 90 yard TD drive after the Decker TD.On 4th n 2 Rex decides to punt and we all new we wouldn't see the ball again.Poor game management and Genos turnovers put the nail in the coffin. We ran the ball well but were once again in a deep hole so we had to throw it and punted 5 straight times.Ugly game and we still only lose by 7.
You mention the 3 losses as reasons they may be close, but by that comparative token the 1 win the Jets have had was against the god awful Raiders by 5 points.
Playcalling had a big say in all 3 losses, specifically the Packers and Bears games since talent wise and injuries plaguing both teams, we were on par with both. Geno got a great pass to Kerley wiped out due to incompetence on the sidelines, we could not run the ball on the Packers and could not get out of our own way with penalties. Dee Milliner got rushed back on the field too soon, Rodgers saw him as the weak link and made sure when Milliner was on Nelson that he was going his way(Really Nelson shredded everyone with circus catches). The Bears game was frustrating since Marty for some reason went away late in the game from running the ball with Ivory when the Bears did not want any part of him. Add it being a terribly officiated game between the Walls phantom PI call, and the negated fumble recovery TD and Geno having 2 costly turnovers, and this was a game we coughed up to a wounded team that needed to be defeated at home. The Lions just kicked our OLine's asses in pass protection, they will do that to many teams. They have a gifted front 7 even with Tulloch gone. Geno did not help the cause at all, and add guys like Golden Tate being absolute pests with YAC/Separation he always gets and it was a nightmare matchup and we're fortunate to only lose by 7 to them. but the Lions are a better team than us and if Detroit does not win that division, they will have a lot of explaining to do. By far the best of the 3 teams based off what I've seen after a back to back to back affair.
We shot ourselves in the foot with penalty after penalty and gave the Raiders free yardage and extended their drives. Team is too undisciplined, the only game I saw the team composed with that stuff was Monday night vs the Bears.
True, but the biggest difference between a good NFL team and a piss poor NFL team is execution. The Raiders have a good deal of talent (relatively speaking) but they make a lot of mistakes and are unfocused.
They also rather start jag vets than play that young talent Carr getting hurt could be blessing in disguise. Mcgloin is the best QB on that team.
We beat a shitty team at home and lost to a decimated team at home and an ok team at home. 3 home games, 1-2 with a win against the dregs of the NFL Yeah, we're right on the brink of turning it around. _
There is something to how you lose games in the NFL. Losing is losing no matter what but playing close games and losing is a better sign then getting blown out. It does mean where close and if you cut down on stupid turn overs and get it together you can flip it and get it done. We've been competitive and right there until the bitter end. If we can clean up a few things well be turning them into wins.
I'm beginning to think Marty isn't such an offensive genius. Our offensive schemes and strategy don't look like they are fooling our opponents. This may be more on the offensive line not being able to run/pass block for shit, but it's even easy for me to tell my 20 year old son where the ball is going and to whom, before the snap. I'm not impressed with this style of the "Spread/West coast" offense that Marty brings. It doesn't fool anyone. As far as personnel and match ups, I realize we are limited. Our best receiver is a slot, and out number 1 is really a possession receiver. Our Te's are decent, our backs are too, but no all pro's, anywhere. Our O-line stinks worse each week. We really need to concentrate there before skill players. Defense is a whole other story.....
Geno, for all his improvement and impressive big plays, still drives me nuts whether it be the obvious mistakes like the turnovers and unnecessary sacks, but also the host of missed opportunities and drive killing bad decisions. He has way too many easy passes sail on him of both the long and short variety. There are several potential game breaking (or at least momentum shifting), big play opportunities he muffs EVERY week that could have easily turned our losses into wins, bad officiating and all. I think Smith has at least a 50% chance of becoming the QB everyone hope/expects and needs him to be but I really don't believe it is going to happen overnight. In the meantime, I don't think it would hurt him to take a seat from the bench and watch for a while.... It didn't hurt Aaron Rodgers riding the pine for three years and, if Smith is too emotionally fragile to watch and learn for a spell and take the intervening period to digest/process all the things he did wrong during the first few games of this season, he's not the man for the job anyway. If Vick turns things around and we start winning the games we should be winning, there will be plenty of valuable lessons for Geno to learn just by observing. And, no matter how well Vick plays, Geno's chance to return to the starting lineup will happen soon enough either due to Vick getting hurt or by not making enough of a difference.
So does Drew Brees. Not comparing the two, because obviously Brees is on a different plane, but if that's the point you're making than there are some very good quarterbacks who should be held responsible for their team's bad records.
We need to start executing plays on offense and generate turnovers on defense. The season isn't over just yet but something has to change quickly.
Drew Brees is a HOF Super Bowl Winning QB and is responsible for about 50 TDs a year. Geno is responsible for about 2 dozen 3 and outs and 7 turnovers this year. _
Let me give you a simpler, but more direct and intuitive reason. Not long ago, there used to be a time, when the offensive line was the pride and strength of the offense. They protected, and created holes. That line is long gone, and Jets haven't invested much in the OL as of late. Seriously, which high pick did we choose? Mangold and Ferguson, then nobody from the top 2 for more than half a decade. Jets OL is not the pride or the strength of this offense any more. If Jets want to improve, that's where it should start. Seriously, do you think this OL will protect Peyton Manning against decent front seven? For how long? 1 second? Their rushing attack is decent, but that's about it. They need to improve here - and they must do that quickly.
