Salas has made some decent plays when he's caught the ball in space. Nelson is more of a possession receiver - a big body who has good hands, but lacks the "big play" potential. I think they both have their place. Amaro can't block for shit and is a liability in the running game. It will take time for him to learn to block if it ever happens. That said, he still should be used like Graham as many posters have alluded to in this thread. Get him lined up all over the field on a regular basis and create match up problems. Other teams do it regularly against us, but we don't seem to see it happen on our end that often...
That one run he broke for after the missed tackle was great... We would see a lot more of that with some real receivers
Amaro looks great the last 2 weeks. i think we need to be featuring him more in this offense. he seems to get open, and since the season started, i have seen no issues with drops like the writers talked about in the preseason. he has the potential to be a serious weapon for us if he keeps progressing like this
Nobody is making him out to be a superstar but its clear positive things happen outside of 1 drop vs OAK when he's on the field. He's earning more playing time and snaps these last 2 weeks, let him sink or swim. At least give him the chance. Nelson should be strictly a red zone target, nothing more. He does not get seperation on a consistent basis and his size offers up something useful down in the end zone. Salas can be the 3rd WR to be relied upon before the red zone to get us some big play yardage.
Nelson doesn't deserve a spot on the roster. I've been saying that for a long time and it's funny how people are blasting him now when during the preseason he was a "great posession WR" and the reason Stephen Hill didn't deserve a roster spot ( Maybe he still doesn't,.. but neither does Nelson ). His ceiling has already been reached and based on his performance so far this year he's already on the decline. He was much more productive / reliable last year and has been incredibly inconsistent in his routes and has also dropped a couple balls. His saving grace last season was that for whatever reason he and Geno hit it off,.. That chemistry seems to all but disappeared at this point.
What gives you the impression that Salas isn't a JAG? He made a few plays I'll give him credit on that but he doesn't do anything great out there. You think he can constantly beat press coverage consistently as a #2? I know you like these guys that look good on every blue moon like Matt Simms but let's not go overboard here.
There were a couple of drops yesterday, but you will have that in the NFL. Imo most of the incomplete passes were due to inaccuracy by Smith. But Salas and Amaro were very good yesterday, and Decker did make some plays. To me the two play portoin of the game that said it all was when Smith overthrew Ivory on that screen pass attempt, and followed it with his interception. Just plain awful.
Nelson might be able to catch, but that's it. He caught the ball one yard short and all he had to do was fall forward. Instead he gets his feet set and then gets tackled short of the line. YAC are zero for Nelson. I agree, he has reached his limit and is coming down fast. Salas - who knows what this kid can do. He seems to show decent hands and can move a bit. Those are good qualities and maybe he can become a solid starting receiver in the NFL. That would be a change for us and we could certainly use it. Jarrett - Had a huge play on the 3rd and 1 but also missed a huge opportunity on a blitz. Had a free shot at Stafford and missed him. We still got the sack but it was a 1 yard sack instead of a huge 10 yard loss plus maybe a fumble.
One other positive, Quigley was our best player yesterday. he did an outstanding job punting the ball.
Exactly. I thought one of the keys to beating the lions was to use Amaro extensively to the point where he'd be near 100 yds receiving. Those 3 and outs killed the team. If they get Amaro involved earlier maybe there aren't 5 consecutive 3 and outs and at worst they eat more time and the D gets a break. I'll give Quigley credit, his punting was good yesterday to the point where despite all those 3 and outs field position wasn't an issue when it very realistically could have been a killer for the team.
Salas has shown good YAC ability going back to last year. Yeah he had a "drop" against Oakland but Decker has had a few too where if Salas did the same thing people would be calling for him to be cut. The guy runs good routes, is shifty down the field and can play inside and outside and had a prolific college career. If u want a JAG, look no further than David Nelson who has done nothing but fumble and get no separation.
We weren't calling Nelson a JAG last year when he caught 2 TDs against the Raiders. Nelson has been pretty bad when asked to take on a larger role - very unfortunate. Salas has some good skill-sets like being able to generate YAC - but people in this thread were talking him up as he's suppose to be some difference maker. He's an average receiver that can help us move the chains. Normally a receiver like this would be #4 on the depth chart.
