Rex represents a conundrum for us. He's had success but hasn't been to the playoffs in several years.. Some of the blame isn't his but Tannenbaums and Woodys. But that's not the point. A good coach has to be able to steal a few games with his ability. And that's all that counts. No other argument is necessary.

I think he thinks it is good that the players like him, but it really shows in their lack of discipline. Players were afraid of Lombardi, Shula, and Parcells and that is why they were so sucessful. In my opinion, you can't be a friend to every one of your players and be great. There are of course exceptions to every rule (Pete Carroll last year), but I think Rex would be a better coach if he didn't befriend his players. He should try to put the fear of God (or fear of being cut) into some of them. You can't keep a player in fear of losing his job by tattooing the players number to your body.

I would definitely take Arians as well. The argument that the "next guy may be worse" is really lame.

    Ancient wisdom strikes again:

It is much safer to be feared than to be loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with.

Precisely. That sort of logic could, in principle, always be used to argue against replacing any inept officeholder in any domain.

I didn't like him when we were good but I like him when we are bad

What I'm saying is that it's motivational to talk and be in the spotlight when you're hungry and weak but trying to make a name- but when you have good talent and a chance to go far you need to STFU and just win low key....

    Just my crazy thought

you can be a players coach and still stress the details... the issue is, the coaches themselves arent big on details. we waste more timeouts and send plays and units in late way too often. thats a coaching thing not a player discipline thing

Any reason you're rocking another teams practice squad player in your avatar?

the unwavering commitment to Geno is not in the best interests of the team.

Oh and he had a wrong challenge and called a timeout at the wrong time again. He surely has come so far since the days of mis-using challenges and wasting timeouts.

I think he is the same coach. I have not seen any real evolution from him

Think it's time for a fresh slate next year...when the team makes the same mistakes year after year it's not a coincidence...the stupid penalties, the shit qb, the bad play-calling, the draft...not all of it is rex's fault, but we're going backwards....the afc championship games seem a lifetime ago...his methods are still the same as a few years back...it's all rather stale...we need someone with a fresh approach and new ideas

I basically agree. I think Rex is what he is. He's a defensive coach utterly infatuated with his defense who isn't very good at managing any other aspect of the team. His coaching style is to be the ultimate player's coach and team cheerleader: He pumps his players, his assistants, and himself so full of hot air that anything that comes out of his mouth pertaining to the assessment of his team's performance simply cannot be taken seriously. He's a good guy and a good leader of men, but he's a very mediocre head coach. He is what he is.

Slim, you're preaching to the choir here. We've been saying for years that Rex's DNA screams Coordinator but not HC. I'm not saying that's a problem as there are many instances of lifetime coordinators making a great impact on the game. Westhoff comes to mind immediately. Rex really needs to re-evaluate his position although I have a feeling his ego won't let him admit he's not cut out to be a HC.

This is a great analogy. Rex would be an all-time great DC lifer (monte kiffin type).
