Allen is the best tackler the Jets have had in recent years. So if a WR catches a ball and he drops him right away, with no YAC, that has value too. We could do worse than him.
No. Bill Polian said on Sirius today that AA is playing really well at corner and I agree. He will only improve too
True but the problem is he is still playing CB like a safety. He is getting a little too comfortable "letting" the guy catch it and then tackle him. A true CB should try to break up the pass. I could sacrifice some YAC if he would try to cause more incompletions. His ball skills need work. He's stepping up admirably for what is being asked of him but he really should be playing safety not corner. You have to put some blame on Idzik for this because Allen should be refining his craft as a safety and he could be a big time contributor in the role that he played last year - covering TEs in the box, like he did with Gronkowski. That's his future, not corner, and it would be great to have that kind of play in the present but Idzik has left such a hole at CB that the team needs him there.
Fixed Injures have really hurt the team in regards to Milliner and McDougle as we have no depth. What people don't see to realize is, Idzik did try and get Vontae Davis from the Colts at the beginning of FA. But yes, you are right we are wasting Allen's potential and I believe Idzik deserves some blame for not having a true plan B.
His man coverage for a safety is excellent, and just above average as a CB. However, his zone coverage, especially deeper down the field, is troublesome. That's why ideally you would want him at SS. But with Pryor looking more like a SS than FS, AA has to become a really good CB or go play SS somewhere else. I have a feeling it's going to end up being the latter, which really sux!
The thing is - yes injuries have been a factor and yes maybe he had no idea Patterson was such a loser (not an excuse I'd make but...), but why is he sitting idly by right now? There are things Idzik could be doing to try and fix this hole. During the season, your job as GM is to try and plug holes. I'm not talking about the POS guys he's grabbing off the practice squad wire, either. Why not make a trade? 2009, Tannenbaum recognized the WR position was a joke early in the year and went out and got Braylon Edwards. Why not make a similar type transaction here? They really, really need an experienced veteran presence at the position... not more greenhorns. Why not sign a FA vet like Quentin Jammer for the rest of the year? He's obviously not a talent anymore but he's the type of guy that has seen it all and can be serviceable based on experience alone. Those are the type of moves you can make where you could move Allen back to safety and the secondary gets better two-fold.
Agreed. I'd rather see Landry spelling Allen at safety but Thurman must feel like he's their 2nd best CB after Milliner. I thought both Walls and Allen did a decent job at corner given that neither has really played many games there as a starter. If Milliner can get healthy and back in game shape it could be a good move as Allen may not be lined up on the opposing teams #1 receiver...at least I hope not.. The Jets don't seem to play match-up, they just put their corners on one side and whoever is there they cover. That may have worked with Mevis and Cro but I don't think it works with this group yet, later in the year as they gain experience it may work but I'm not convinced it works now.
These guys should be better as the season wears on because they are straight getting fed to the wolves. It's a bit of risky business doing this defense with the inexperience at CB but Walls and Allen have done an admirable job out there.... Hopefully when Millner comes back, they can do that 3 safety look I really like with Allen playing FS and Pryor just running amuck.
I've seen some pretty good things from Allen so far at CB. I think he can keep improving and developing.
This is unfortunately, right on the money. We have to take an emerging top safety and move him to CB. Idzik gets blame ( although injuries to Milliner & McDouglel don't help, unless you subscribe to the theory that you don't draft guys with injury histories like them.
Allen isnt bad at corner but he isn't that good either. His linebacker/safety instincts still show at that position. He waits for the receiver to catch the ball to make the "solid tackle". We need a COVER corner thats going to stop the WR from catching the ball first. We give him a pass as "doing good" because we all know that he's out of position but not doing as bad as a normal safety making that transition probably would. I think this is going to be an issue if its an all year thing. I would let Milliner and Walls have those duties so AA can go back to locking up on the good receiving TE's, because at this point in Pryor's young career he can't do that just yet.... SOMEBODY is gonna have to do it. Thats the whole right side and middle of the field vulnerable for automatic yards game in and game out. Gronk is gonna give us hell twice this year if that's the case.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...o_allen_at_cornerback_for_rest_of_season.html I don’t see how we can go back," said Thurman, an excellent NFL corner during his own playing days. "That’s when you get in trouble, when you start taking a guy and saying, ‘OK, you’re at safety, now we’re going to move you to corner. Oh, now let’s move you back.’ We can’t do that to him. We have to keep moving forward, at least for, I believe, the remainder of this year and see how it all shakes out." sound enough thinking to me. This is how things have shook out, no room for passive aggression now. let him make his case at Corner and play things by ear come the winter, is he an answer? do we have to spend on another corner? (theres no way we draft a CB high next year, it'll just keep the position filled with more inexperience or questionable developing entities than needed to operate) the path he's on now is the one he's on now, this is no waste of potential at all, just a reshuffling of his talents in a time of need. he's a seventh round pick thats already a converted linebacker, we're not exactly turning Andrew Luck into a wide receiver or anything, he played well at safety but why is this any less promising for him, especially if the coaches thought enough of him to think this COULD work? worse comes to worse he's an all around depth player at secondary for us next year, I'm sure Allen doesn't mind, this is keeping him a roster spot and maybe giving him better value overall
Just because he's a 7th round pick doesn't mean he doesn't have promise or value. Once you get into the league, it's all about proving your worth at that time. I think Allen was most effective as an in-box safety, lining up against TEs safeties become more and more important in today's league - I would hope the Jets would stay ahead of the curve. Jets are putting him in different positions and not allowing him to grow in 1 particular position. I think he was a better safety then a CB.
No biggie .He is trying to instill confdence in him. Allen was a good pick. Can get physical at the line and played a good game last week . Its his speed if anything that's a ?
Jets barely blitzed against the packers. Look up the stats. Seriously. That's what rex does, he fakes the blitz. He pulls a couple naked blitzes to keep the threat real, but he pulled back a lot vs Rogers. Read the BGA on thejetsblog, it's really informative.
