He is a genetic freak and he can be a beast- I have seen it and so has MJD!!! He also gets about 1 close dramatic play per game (tip ball or near sack)

But casually focusing on him during a few series, I noticed a ton of "off plays" by him

Don't get me wrong you can't go 100% every play but his body language jumps out as taking off-

Am I wrong? Does he go full out all the time?

He had a motor problem in college so I'm not surprised, but he's also the best outside pass rusher we have.

Coples was used to jam Marshall at the LOS a TON today. He wasn't noticable in the pass rush because he wasn't asked to rush the passer much today.

He deflected a pass and got a few hits on Cutler. He's quietly having a good season.

Our pass rush is focused more around collapsing the pocket inside with Wilkerson and Richardson, while Coples and Pace are mostly holding down the outside and containing the QB from scrambling laterally. Coples also is used quite a bit to jam big receivers when they are lined up in the slot. he was used effectively in this way on Nelson last week, and Marshall and Jeffery this week. When the OC was trying to use them as mismatches on slot guys or safeties, Rex had him jam them and ruin the timing, and then clean up swing/screen passes to his side if they went that way. It probably made it seem as if he was out of a lot of plays but he was used very effectively.

Hmmm. There may be a reason for it. Defensive players expend a lot of energy and he may not
push it on some plays. I am sure Coples knows when he has to give his all in the game. A good
comparison might be to major league baseball pitchers. Most baseball pitchers who throw hard
95+ know they will get tired if they throw hard every pitch. They only bring it when they need
too. Maybe Coples is doing that.
