Didn't see this posted anywhere but here it is. I broke down Geno Smith play by play including all of his runs and throws. Any feedback on writing style would be appreciated.

More importantly though, discussion of the quarterback play and the playcalling overall. I was a bit surprised going back how many screens were actually called. We can only hope that Geno will learn to start to throw the ball from under center more as well because the play action can lead to big plays with our very good running attack.

I'll get to your play by play later but just wanted to comment on the screen game. I don't recall an effective screen game AT ALL under Sanchez nor last year either. This is the first time in a long time the Jets are killing it with the screen, especially the up the gut screen play, whatever that's called.

the screen game was alright when lt was here

but generally this is the first coordinator in a long time that is able to effectively use the pass game to move the ball down the field. we used to rely a lot more on pounding the rock and taking shots when they are given to us; but against the raiders we were aggressive and really moved the ball well through the air. its refreshing to see for sure and i believe it is a key piece to this teams long term success. i am excited to see rex and marty together when marty isnt playing to develop his rookie and instead getting creative with the game plan and giving the jets offensive prowess.

lets see how things go against the packers; but if the offense can do the same things minus the penalties and fixable mistakes the jets have a good chance of winning

The screen game came back last season with Geno and Powell. Big fan of shonn Greene, and what he did here; but he couldn't run the screen for shit. I think it was a combination of crazy schotty play calling, shotty oline play, shitty Sanchez play and lousy screen ability of Greene. Tomlinson had some nice gains on the screen while he was here though.

It's clear Geno has become far more decisive in regards to where he wants to throw the football. Just keep on progressing Geno and you will be here for a long time.

Sunday will be an excellent test for Geno.

It may have just been coach speak, but RR, MM, and DL all said during the offseason and pre-season that Geno's footwork is impeccable now. If it wasn't just coach speak, I would be willing to bet they have been saving those formations (with Geno under center) to surprise some people and don't be shocked if you see him make some passes from under center this Sunday.

The improved screen game is SO nice. Sanchez was unfathomably bad at throwing screens.

Yep. His decision-making and overall decisiveness really stood out to me last week.

You kick ass, dude. I love when people contribute to the main page. Going to read through this tomorrow, and then go through the snaps and see where we agree.

Thank you so much for the work you put into this.

This is nice bro! Geno had a really good game, hope we see more... You're right.. he's gotta SELL The play action not SHOW the play action. Seems like something that will develop over time. I believe Geno will be our guy for quite some time. He's progressing nicely.

    Great work.

On the pass to Cumberland that was a bit high, felt like there was a lot of pressure on that play so he couldn't fully step into that throw. Not sure if you agree with that view.

And to add onto the final play where he takes the sack that took Jets out of FG range, the thing that concerned me is how Geno spun away from a defender. I think having your back to the defense when being blitzed to try and get away from someone is a big nono.

Thanks for this. I have one suggestion. Add yard line, down, distance and game time.

Nice work. I would ask you double check Pass #11. You wrote "The ball is delivered on time and in stride for the receiver to keep running". I vividly remember that play. While Cumby was able to run after the catch, it was not on time and in stride. He slowed a bit in that window between those 2 defenders to give Geno time get him the ball. I also disagree that Kerley was the primary. The fact that Geno never looked Kerley's way, waited for Cumby to get to that window and Cumby slowing down makes me think the play was designed to go to him. I remember last year in garbage time of the Titans game Geno and Cumby connected on a similar route for a TD. That was a better example of an on time and in stride throw by Geno. It was one of his best throws of last season IMO.

If I remember correctly, he was pressured up the middle on that play and his forearm even hits a helmet during the follow through.

This is awesome. I only really had time to skim, but if you did one of these weekly, I would read it weekly. This kind of thing could come in handy down the line too. For example, imagine if we could compare every play of week 7 in 2014 to every play of week 7 in 2013.

One thing that may make this even more useful... on incompletions, sacks, picks, etc. I would point out what was available. What stuck out to me like a sore thumb on the final sack (I think it was that play) was Eric Decker being WIDE OPEN about 40 feet in front of me in the corner of the endzone. I was at the game so I didn't get a great feel for the kind of time Geno had, but to the naked eye it looked like he had time to get the pass off and put it where Decker could get it.

All in all, I love stuff like this. It's the entire reason I wrote up the "rollover money" post that is now stickied. More facts and less opinion are always wanted.

In my estimation that ball to Cumberland is where it had to be. The throw is slightly behind Cumberland and up the field rather than in front and flat across the field so the zone defender can't just line him up for a kill shot. The other defend reacts up to the sit route by Kerley and it looked like Geno errored on throwing the ball behind Cumberland towards that defender instead of the other one to be cautious.

Whether these were his intentions or it was just a bad throw we don't know.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions as well. I'm going to continue to do this weekly and improve the quality along with the details and formatting.

One thing I saw about Geno the second time watching the game is he is taking too many unnecessary hits. I love his running/scrambling ability, think he feel pressure and space well. He just needs to get down. I think this might be a tough thing for him to fix, bc this is just the way he knows how to play football.

Very nice read. The only thing I would argue is "selling the PA". I think with Geno's turnovers last year, it was drilled into him to secure the ball with both hands.

Sanchez couldn't execute a screen to save his life, he always mis-timed them or couldn't lob the pass well enough, and was never able to sell it to the defense, it was maddening.
