First, let me get this out there so I can suffer my lashings now and get them over with...I actually scheduled a family outing on the first day of football...I had to watch the Jets game, last night (Monday), on my DVR...pfffttt....what is WRONG with me?? That said.... So, I've read through a bunch of threads etc...and I haven't seen this mentioned but in one or two articles... "Good teams dominate bad teams...except the New York Jets" That has been recent memory...as in the last 2 or 3 decades. I can count on one hand how many times the New York Jets went out and beat the HELL out of a team they were SUPPOSED to. Think back...hell, think back to just this offseason how many times we complain how the Jets always play down to their competition etc... They always have me with 2 minutes left and I'm ready to throw the T.V. out the window... Now, yes, the score was a helluva lot closer than it should have been and technically "yes" we let them "hang" around with the 12 penalties...but mid-third quarter did any of you really think the Raiders we going to win. I can honestly say I didn't. I didn't think, in Ryan's words, a "Rat Kill" hells chance that Oakland would win that game. I wasn't all pent up with anxiety...I didn't want to throw my beer at the T.V. I was like..."that is an EPIC" beat down I am/just watched." When John Goodman throws his hat in the locker room in the movie Revenge of the Nerds and yells "You got beat by a bunch of NERDS....NERDS!!!!" That is Allen in the Raiders locker room but instead he is screaming "25 YARDS Rushing!!!!" Yes it was the Raiders...yes...but we did what we were SUPPOSED to do for a change and it was FANTASTIC!!!! I take each week, in the NFL, on a week by week basis...and I will tell you this...after watching all the footage/listen to talking heads the only other team that dominated, week 1, like the Jets are the Seahawks. And I'll take those comparisons all day long. For one week the Jets are the most dominant team in the NFL... To be quite honest I like our chances in Green Bay too....but we'll see.
There is no question that we thoroughly dominated our opponent . . . but our opponent was the Oakland Raiders. I think we have a chance to have a really good year, but let's see how we do against some better competition.
Right...but you summed up my point...years past it would have been 19 to 17 and you would have killed your T.V. before the game was over...at no point did I ever think the Raiders were winning that game....can't say that I could have said that too many times over the years.
I agree, but I did almost kill my T.V. with all of the mistakes we made. I want to see a little more consistency, especially against better competition, before I start going GAGA.
We won by 5 points.. That does not constitute domination in my eyes... Teams that truly dominate beat other teams by double digits... We played very well, but that score is not indicative of how we played... If we want to take that next step and be considered a dominate team, we need to take advantage of all of the opportunities that are given to us. At this point in time, we do not do that.
The Jets have dominated the teams they were supposed to *most* of the time in the Rex era when the expectations were that they were a good team (38-0 over Raiders in 2009, 26-3 over Bucs in 2009, 38-14 over Bills in 2010, 38-7 over Bills in 2010, 26-10 over Bengals in 2010, 32-3 over Jaguars in 2011, 37-10 over Chiefs in 2011). There have been a few games that didn't go that way as well, notably (13-16 loss to Bills in 2009, 22-24 loss to Jaguars in 2009, 6-10 loss to Fins in 2010, 24-34 loss to Raiders in 2011, etc.) Since 2012 the Jets haven't been a particularly good team. You can make a pretty good argument that we're something like 9- 23 with anybody but Rex coaching the team the last two seasons. So there really haven't been any games that we should have dominated over that span, including the Raiders game on Sunday. We might be a good team this year with a little bit of luck. If so then we're going to have to dominate a few teams this year to get there. BTW, I'm not sure a 5-11 caliber team has ever beaten two teams as good as the Pats and the Saints were last year in meaningful regular season games. Rex is a much better coach than he is generally given credit for. Hopefully one of these years (*crosses fingers for this year*) the talent will all come together and we'll get to see him in all his glory.
I guess I'm a little old skool in that respect. I don't need to see 40 points to consider it domination. When I look in your eyes and see you would rather be ANYWHERE but on that field with me....that is what I saw. When I see vets like Drew and Tuck hide on the sidelines...that is domination. End of story.
It doesn't have to necessarily be beating a team by 20 or 30 or 40.. But dominate teams capitalize on the mistakes of their opponent.. We tend to not do that.. We let the Raiders stick around in that game far too long.. Should have been out of reach for them in the 3rd, but instead, they were still in it with 1:40 to go in the 4th.
The world of a Jets fan is to never expect them to have an easy win, even when then dominate statistically. I was never really comfortable until the 71 yard run. Even then, they give up a TD to make it close, and on-sides kicks do get recovered.
Rex's defense dominated Brady and Brees last year. Yeah, Brees got a ton of yards against them but he was also running scared on a bunch of plays. I wish I had a screenshot of the moment that Coples and Wilkerson were loose and on the way and he just totally went wide-eyed the moment before contact. They had a great shot of his face just before he went down and I knew the Jets were winning that game when I saw that look.
What it fundamentally comes down to is a few plays. We crushed them on nearly every play, but if we play the same game without: Geno's redzone fumble, and Geno's sack for a big loss. We win by a wider margin. I believe he can cut down on these very simple errors however, and that we can make some noise this season.
If we can just cut down on the unforced errors, I think we can be the team we all want to be. It's a matter of consistently not making the mistakes we made last week.
I don't understand what the question is here about whether or not the Jets are good team or a not so good team. I saw the game, and though I was very frustrated by the mistakes and the final score, I came away knowing the Jets could have easily won that game 29-7. The score was very deceiving. And, just for an added tidbit, Bill Cowher was on the local radio broadcast, and asked about what he thought of the Jets, he said that if the Jets go 4-4 in their 1st 8 - they will make the playoffs....and he felt with the way the team is built, it's not a distant possibility. He loves the D , the running backs and WR's.......I'll take his point of view any day over anyone one screaming and crying everyday as to why the Jets are not going to get to .500
For the first time in forever I felt like I was watching an NFL caliber offense. They dominated on the defensive side as expected. The offense looked solid outside of silly mistakes and penalties.
Done that before, bought Knicks-Spurs tickets which fell on the Jets-Colts game in 2009. It was hard at the time but when the Jets won MSG exploded, I dont think anyone in there even cared about the basketball game. It was quite the epic feeling walking out of MSG into snow flakes falling on the empty streets of Manhattan on a Sunday night with a buzz knowing the Jets had beat the undefeated Colts and were more than alive going into week 17.
Much like the 9ers. They destroy teams play by play but the score board never really shows it. That's that old school smash mouth ground n pound football you spoke about. I love it. That's how you prosper in this soft ass "passing league".
Agreed. As offenses evolve into high flung passing attacks, defenses are morphing into ballerinas to try and stop it. Gone are the days of 270 pound linebackers crushing lineman and running backs alike. Every day we hear about a linebacker dropping 20 pounds to be a better pass rusher or better in coverage. And guys like Sherry Rhodes and Cromartie who can run leap and defend the pass just don't have the stones to come up and stop a strong rushing attack.
The plays you mentioned probably cost the Jets 10 points. If Pryor had caught that interception instead of taking his eyes off the ball- that's another 7 points. And another 1 point if we hadn't gone for a 2 point conversion on that one TD. We could have had another 18 points and won 37-14, and that would've been a better reflection of how the teams actually played. On the other hand, the team has to get credit for not finding a way to lose the game. Losing the turnover battle that badly, I'm just glad that we won.
