Is the fact that our defense allowed a 98 yard drive for a TD right afterwards. THAT is where any anger should be.
I'm actually surprised the Jets held Indy to 3...When Indy was that close I thought they were going to put it in and just end the Jets right there.
What game were you watching? It was 80 yards, and ended up with a field goal. But also lost is the 3 plays called before the 4th down. Houston over RT three straight times. You want aggressive play calling, I would have rather they tried something then....
that is what is actually lost in this whole mess. incomplete pass, they get it at the 2. other than not converting, an INT in the endzone was the absolute worse thing that could happen, so the Jets actually shot themselves in the foot twice in that play. whether having to go another 18 yerds would have mattered is another discussion, but I sure would have liked to make them have to do it.
Lost is that the target on the errant throw was none other than James DEARTH! God, it must be bad if we're throwing to Dearth! That, or we figure that the opposition would never dream we'd throw to him, as Dearth would just grab the ball and longsnap it back to Pennington.
Pennington was under massive pressure and had to get rid of it, but they should have drawn something up that would have got Coles or Cotchery the ball... Heck, I'd even take Chris Baker...
Also, on the play that Freeney nailed Houston, Dearth was the one "trying" to block him. Our f'n longsnapper...who was also Chad's target on the 4th down pass. Now we know why the only thing he does is snap the ball.
I don't have a problem with going for it. That's the kind of coach he is. It's the school he comes from. Parcells and Belichick are both that kind of coach. They believe that if you go for it all the time you make it more than not. Next time in the same spot he'll kick it, but he's trying to show early in his career what kind of coach he is. One with cajones. The biggest thing in the game was the lack of a fourth quarter pass rush, which is the most important thing in football. Can't win without it. All this game shows is that we will be drafting defense, but we knew that anyway before the game. As for Miller, I said he was going to break one eventually. He's a fine return man. Probably win the ST player of the week. Colts deserved it. They drove twice when they had to , sandwiched around a KO return which is always flukey when you get it. Jets have speed all of a sudden. Smith, Washington, Coles, Cotch, Miller Great game. Bad ending.
That whole situation cost us the game, 1st and G from the 7 and we run 3 straight times then 4th and G from the 3 and we have our short yardage team in so we had no playmakers to throw to. indy knew we weren't running again but we tried to get cute and it burned us AND we burned a TO which also came back to hurt us.
I disagree the game was decided by that. The first 3 plays aside, if we kick the FG it's 17-14 against the Colts which means about half the scoring is done. They are getting to 30 by hook or by crook. It would have changed the dynamics and we COULD have won, but I heard some talking head mention the onside kick (Madden, I think). That showed guts too and we got that one. Mangini is a keeper.
sure things could have changed but isn't it better to be up 17-14 when the Colts get it next rather than to be tied? That sequence killed us, let's not forget about the blown TO too. We sure could have used that on the last drive.
Everything is clear to see after it happens. I personally would have kicked the FG, I thought so at the time, but I had no problem with going for it. Getting the 3 there only would have us tied at the end, getting 7 wins the game. Of course, the entire rest of the game would be played differently starting with the ensuing kickoff, so you never really know. Just like the onsides kick, we make three yards there and everyone is hailing the decision, that's the way it goes. I'd rather have a coach who tries for the TD when in doubt than a coach who settles for a FG when he should be going for the TD.
I think lost amongst the 4th down decision is the decision to leave J Miller on the sidelines for the final kickoff. I still don't understand why the guy who just ran a kickoff back 103 yards is on the sidelines with the biggest kickoff of the game coming up and the job is entrusted to a rookie. Things could have been different if we started at our own 35 instead of own 2. The whole 2nd half this game had the makings of whoever touched the ball last was gonna win it..
I can't believe Indy squibbed the kick. We fall on it at the 40 or so and Chad has :50 and a timeout to get into FG range. It worked out perfectly because we misplayed it into our own 1 yard line, that's what finished us, really. Until then, like you said, last team to get the ball, which was us.
Sorry, I got my diaper changes mixed up. I apologize. The point is that the Defense let them march down the field.
How many times did blowing a To come back to hurt us under Herm? Not many if any, blowing 2 TOs cost us big time on Sunday.
