Hopefully Pryor puts fear in offenses heart and limit them to only certain areas of the field. We need something
Idzik the cheap just reached out to Asante Samuel, trying to "bargain shop." Samuel probably laughed in his face.
But, given that he's out of the league, don't you think that $800k or whatever is a heck of a lot better than $0?
I don't think the NFL will allow Rex to put Lankster AND Pryor on the field at the same time. Player safety.
I love the lankster suplex. He probably would be flagged this season though now that the refs call flags for every damn little touch by the CB. It's ridiculous
I wouldn't put them in the same boat. Samuel can still bait QBs into the occasional INT on veteran savvy alone. Nmandi brings nothing to the table except for the chance of Kerry Washington appearing at our games.
Holy crap people, calm down. Anybody blaming Idzik for a fluke injury like this is off their rocker. I really liked McDougle and it's a shame for him, but nobody was expecting him to be the #2 starter going into the season, nor was the season highly dependent on him. Milliner should be fine by the season beginning. Don't forget Mangold had a high ankle sprain in 2011 and only missed 2 games, and he plays a much more physically demanding position. If Mangold can return in 2 weeks, Milliner can return in 4. We're not doomed, the sky is not falling, we're deep at CB. We have Patterson, Dowling and Walls, who can play that #2 spot. We can even move Wilson to the outside worse comes to worst. If Milliner had a broken ankle or worse, then I'd be in the "we must make a trade" boat. A torn ACL can happen to anybody, whether "injury prone" or not. Stop being sensationalists as if that's the norm or some nonsense. Personally I'm rooting for Walls to take the spot now, but I think Patterson will be motivated to step it up.
Even if Dee misses a game or two I'm not too concerned. Our defensive line is outrageous, that puts considerably less pressure on the corners. It's a lot easier to compensate for a shitty secondary than it is to compensate for a shitty line.
Very true. What I think we need to look for is more zone coverage- rely on our safeties a bit more- and let the front seven generate most of the pressure without excessive blitzing.
I think you are dreaming if you think Rex won't be forced to blitz more. As it was pointed earlier, the D-line is best at stopping the run. But the addition of Babin should help.
The problem with heavy blitzes is that we probably don't have the kind of corners who can play press coverage effectively. Also the refs have been instructed to call more flags for pass interference and defensive holding this year. I'm not saying don't blitz, but we have to be smarter about it. Those all out blitzes - the QBs we're facing are poised enough to find the guy who beats Patterson, and he'll laser it out to him, and that's big trouble for us. Some of our corners will need help to function effectively. We can't pretend we have Revis & Cromartie and run the defense that way and expect it to work. The line is great against the run, but we need our linebackers to generate more pressure so that we don't "need" as many heavy blitzes that expose our weaker corners. Over-arching point is that we can scheme around the weaknesses at corner due to strengths in other areas. Rex must scheme around the defense he has now- not around the players he hopes they develop into.
We have no depth at the position. That's where the concern is coming from. Patterson is a mediocre journeyman and McD was never a great cb in college even before missing almost the entire senior season after surgery. And the best cb in the nfl is quite injury prone.
So then explain to me why this is suddenly a huge deal now that McDougle is out? Hardly anything has changed. You guys just use this and any excuse you can find to launch a hate campaign against Idzik. No Depth? 2 of the 3 CB positions are covered. This leaves Patterson, Lankster, Dowling, and Walls to fill the last starting spot. How is that not depth? It's not the end of the world. Last year we had Cromartie, who played terrible and Milliner who took a while to develop but looks very good now. At very worse we equal last year, but in all likelihood we are still improved at the position, plus we have Pryor lurking back there as well. Nowhere to go but up in the secondary, although I was rooting for McDougle to win the spot.
And this is not just a "huge deal now.." Had you been around here during the draft you'd have heard these same issues brought up.
