We need to get Pryor out on that field next preseason game. I think with this secondary you are hoping someone steps up at #2. I want to see Walls get more reps with the first team along with the rook.
Eric Allen @eallenjets 1m More Powell looks better moving now. With Patterson out, McDougle gets 1st team reps on the outside.

If there is its not discernible to the eye test. Patterson looked completely out of his element. I said all of FA why arent we going after Captin Mudderland, he plays hard. or Verner. Tampa got Verner for so cheap. And yes, I do know Im talking about a nickle and a zone CB but considering the options in the offseason and now on our roster... they could be a considerable upgrade.
Chris Lopresti @CLoprestiWFAN 3m Walls and Lankster with the 2nd team. McDougle getting Patterson's reps with the 1's. #NYJ And the thread-starter gets his wish!
I think we should have at least gotten Brandon Flowers. Say what you want but he would definitely have been an upgrade over Patterson. With the lineup of QBs we play against to start our season off, you gotta be a little concerned about what our record will be like if our secondary isn't good. It was only the first preseason game, so we shouldn't be panicking yet. However, I do think we should be putting McDougle opposite Dee over Patterson. We brought in Dexter for a reason, especially that high in the draft. Our FO obviously sees something in him, so I say go for it next game.
A lot of people are giving Idzik grief over not signing a quality cornerback in the offseason. Now that was something I also expected the Jets to do, given their cap space and all the CBs with recognizable names available this year. But I think I can understand why they didn't. You have to think about it in terms of Idzik's overall plan and approach. They are trying to build a sustainable, long-term successful team, not just address short-term needs. Revis brought a lot of baggage with him, and would require a LOT of money to sign, which might also rub off on our younger players negatively when their own contracts are up. Then teams paid a lot of money for cornerbacks who had a questionable track record, like DRC, and some CBs like Verner apparently didn't fit Rex's scheme ( I've seen him claim that Verner was more of zone CB). We can all remember how during Tannenbaum's days as GM, Jets pulled the triggers on "panic" deals, which seemed kinda prudent at the time because of our needs, but later often turned out to drag the team down for years. That's why I'm definitely willing to let Idzik's approach do its thing and see what it brings us over the next several years.
I grudgingly accept Rex putting our outside CB's on an island when he sends the house. But leaving a nickel corner (Wilson) to cover a slot receiver with no help whatsoever is asking too much. If the blitz doesn't get immediate pressure then Wilson (or whoever is defending the slot) doesn't stand a chance. It's an adjustment I hope Rex makes this year because the league has caught on and is taking advantage of.
Our Dbs looked a lot like they did last season against the Colts. Giving up big plays esp on 3rd downs. But overall bending not breaking. And you would have to think things will improve. Milliner is a lot better than he was last season. Patterson had a bad game but he's a professional corner who can make plays. And Walls isn't bad at all. Plus the team's first round pick was a safety and their 3rd rounder a corner. Plus improvements in the DL. It's a long season.
Eric Allen @eallenjets 15m Rex said McDougle has to get better with the long ball and get in pro shape. Did get beat by Nelson on a long one today.
Can't overreact too much from just one game. Every CB gives up plays, let's see what happens over the next few weeks.
The secondary, the O-line and Geno's development our the biggest concerns we have IMO. Rex is a D specialist. Hopefully he can compensate for the secondary with some awesome game planning. Hopefully Milliner is the real deal and some other guys step up.
Who knew that when we signed Patterson, we actually signed David Barrett again. It was just one game, one Preseason game, but Patterson looked straight-up bad. There's really no other word to describe his performance.
Then maybe they should ease him into more and more starter reps until he's fully healthy. I am also not completely giving up on Dimitri Patterson...I just think the Jets should keep options.
I think the Jets can make Patterson work for the short term as long as he's not in man press most of the time with no help. This guy isn't a lockdown corner by any means, he's a glorified backup that did have some bright spots in recent years, but he's going to need help, and the Jets are going to need some sort of zone on his side to pick up his slack.
LMAO! As usual? Because last season he was terrible right? Some shit just should not be said. Uhhhhhh. He was one of the best slot corners in the league last year. Which Kyle Wilson are you watching? Pretty sure most members agree now that's he's become a solid player. Some folks just selectively watch things and assume because he's not raking up the stats, that he's doing nothing. Fuckin emotional drama queens.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20..._of_joy_before_preseason_opener_vs_colts.html hard not to root for the guy, I gotta say. the most interesting tidbit? "Jets secondary coach Tim McDonald said the coaches want Patterson to learn both the outside and slot corner positions, while McDougle is strictly an outside corner." I was thinking that they might want to try him at nickel corner, but I guess not. I believe this guy can be the starter we need, but I don't know just how soon. the idea of starting third round rookie corner, no matter how studious or driven he is, seems risky. especially with the gauntlet of Top tier QB's the jets have to face.
I hope he takes that #2 job. I think he has a ton of potential. His highlight tapes really jumped out to me and he was my favorite pick of the draft. He fell quite a bit due to injury but his tape shows great ball awareness and solid agility. Him coming into camp out of shape is concerning but I'm sure he'll get it together. All reports point to him being a hardworking high character player and I wanna see what he can do early on. If the Jets did it with Millner last year why not McDougle this year? If he can start the Jets defense will be crazy young. A secondary of Pryor, Allen, Millner and Mcdougle would last four years on cheap contracts. Seattle 2.0! (What happened to the drunk emoticon?)
