I've been a big Coples supporter since his name was called and especially since Mo said that he isn't the player that Q is upon arrival. Looks like he might be able to become borderline elite too this year if healthy. Milliner I expect to progress nicely but still have some ups and downs, hopefully just ups by next season. Geno is the wild card. Could make pro and con arguments on this season for him all day long. In the end I'd say cautiously optimistic about his chances of breaking out to an extent.
It honestly seems as if Demaro Davis is gonma have a break out year.He sounds like he is ready to be a leader. He also picked of Geno for 6 in goal line drills and dropped another int. That isn't saying much but I still have a feeling he is gonna do big things for us this year
I'm going with Coples because if he puts up big sack #s, he'll be on his way to becoming a household name. He can bring more to the table than just pass-rushing, but we all know that that's what garners the recognition. My wish for breakout is Geno. I agree with whoever said it probably won't be until year 3, but maybe he'll surprise us all and move ahead of schedule.
Would love for it to be Demario. A young sideline to sideline athletic hitting LB is something we haven't had in a while. _
Candidates are Coples, Miliner, Ellis, Davis, Smith, Cumberland, Hill, Gates and Salas. The best bet is Miliner, Davis or Couples. Hill has been having another impressive camp. The long shots are Gates and Salas both of whom are longshots to make the team. Like last year Gates is having another great camp and Salas, a big favorite of Idzik's, has been impressing. It is possible that Gates could beat out Ford for the KR with another impressive camp but I think its unlikely as Ford is an Idzik player and Gates is not. All the rookies would have to do poorly or we would have to suffer WR injuries for Gates to make the team. But like Hill he has been injured almost his entire Jets tenure playing through injuries every game last year until his season ending injury. But unlike Hill he does not offer a unique talent such as Hill's deep threat or Hill's size to keep getting additional opportunities. But his impressive early camp deserves some watching.
there is no reason davis should not breakout this year. the d line in front of him is going to give him the space he needs to flow to the ball. rarely are guards going to get to the 2nd level and tie him up. i cn see a 100+ tackles 5 sacks 3-4 ints
Hard to see Sheldon Richardson having a breakout year after being named DROY. But his accolades were based on his ability to stuff the run (30+ Tackles for Loss, tops in the NFL). In the passing game Sheldon had 30+ QB Hurries/Pressures (again top in the NFL) but only 3 sacks. Between his run stuffing and QB hurries he was living in the back field which means he was 1/4 step away on numerous occasions from leading the Jets in Sacks. So here's to Sheldon having a breakout season in his passing attack, improving by a 1/4 step, and hitting the 10+ sack total. Has a team ever had 3 players hit the 10 sack mark? Sack Exchange maybe? I don't think Pace will repeat but if Coples and Richardson can join MoWilk in the 10+ club......wow. Ah hell throw Pace back in there too. 4 players, 40 sacks.
Davis: He seems to be watching lots of film, making plays, taking on a leadership role, and he's very fast. Coples: He's lost some weight, is faster, and seems to be heavily motivated by Babin's competition. Coples probably has some degree of needing external motivation, but the good thing is that once he is motivated he will work very hard. He's been watching more film, should be healthier, and should be ready to play OLB and make his leap finally. Nelson: I see him being a solid if underrated player; he's not afraid of anyone, plays physically, and is reliable- he could have a 60 catch year like he did in Buffalo the year before he tore his ACL. Smith: He's got better weapons, a year of experience, a better run game, and a better defense that should generate more turnovers for him. He's got some red zone threats in Amaro and Decker and Sudfeld- guys with big catch radii. He's learned how and when to run, and he's faster and stronger. He's getting most of the reps in camp and seems more confident- and critically, Marty seems to have found the key to using him more effectively. He played much better out of the shotgun towards the end of the season. My guess would be that Marty will continue doing that throughout the first half of the schedule (to max out the short term chances of winning) and hopefully as the season goes along we can ease him into playing more under center- the ideal will be about a 50/50 ratio, since that's what Marty did with the Eagles. Right now it has to be 90/10 shotgun/center though.
I gotta go with Geno here. He's having a very good camp and has quickly become a true team leader, calling out guys making mistakes and whatnot. The biggest key to me picking him though is that he was in the top 5 in the NFL last year in 3rd and 10+ yard situations and had a completion percentage of 40% on passes over 15 yards, which for a rookie is outstanding. Most of the top guys in the NFL like Rodgers and Brees are around 45% in that category. Rookies who show the ability to get out of bad situations and make deep throws, even with alot of turnovers early on, are usually the guy's who end up becoming great QB's later. We saw the exact opposite with Sanchez. He could hit throws that were 10 yards and under, but if the Jets were in a 3rd and 8+ yard situation, they might as well have just punted the football on 3rd down, because more often then not it was either an interception or way off incompletion. I agree too that Demario Davis will have a big year but I don't really understand why people are saying that this will be his breakout season. He had over 100 tackles last year which ranked him 34th in the NFL. I'm pretty sure he "broke out" last year. He's never going to have more then 3 or 4 sacks in a season because that's not his role at all. A perfect comparison for Davis is actually the guy who just got inducted into the Hall of Fame today and that is Derrick Brooks. Brooks only had 13.5 sacks his entire career and never had more then 3 in a season, but had a 100+ tackles in 12 seasons, which is ridiculous. This is a little off topic too but another crazy stat about Brooks is that he never missed a single game in 14 seasons. 224 games in a row. I don't think we will see another 100+ tackle guy do that again.
Ask a non jets fan about Demario Davis , they'd ask what movie did he play in... Nobody knows about Davis still. Having a breakout year is to take a major leap towards being a star in the league (see Josh Gordon or Alshon Jefferey in 2013) making a real name for yourself . Thats why i think some people picking 4,5 jets at a time including players like Dave Nelson n shit... Not happening lol
