Well Id love to hear his real reason for contacting the Jets first. Did he love playing for Rex that much? If so why all the drama the first time around. Obviously he didnt demand a trade but if you love an organization you dont hold out every year and put your team in a shitty position. Or did he think the Jets would welcome him back with open arms and already have a 15 mil a year contract typed up waiting for him to sign it? Im guessing its the latter. He thought the Jets FO were suckers. Idzik proved him wrong. Just my opinion anyways lol.
He burnt alot of bridges here w/ the way his "people" handled multiple negotiations. They dragged the Jets through the media mud & it started to get out of hand. Regardless of what fans think of Woody..when Revis personally called him out on national TV...that showed his true colors. I'm not sure I believe him about no longer caring about money. It was widely reported that the 15 million base salary he currently has(regardless of any offsets) was a must for the Patriots or any team to sign him. Maybe it's more about ego than material things..but nonetheless money is money.
Revis is desperate now. He thought he was hot shit when him and his crew got that 7 year deal from Tampa Bay. They all thought that if Revis played up to par that he would get his money each year, what he failed to realize was that the Bucs would eventually realize the same thing the Jets realized; you cant be paying a cornerback 16 million under any circumstance. Revis is now walking a thin rope, New England is going to cut him at the end of the year, he better hope his 29 year old ACL holds up.
The guy was the best CB in the NFL and wanted to be paid accordingly which, with the absence of true guaranteed contracts that enable management to essentially sever ties at will, I don't blame Revis or any professional athlete for that matter from trying to secure and maximize fair market value for his services, particularly when you consider how short their playing careers are. There is no loyalty from management (or fans) so expecting the same from players for whom this is a business too, is both childish and unrealistic. For years, Revis was arguably the BEST/Most Valuable defensive player in the NFL. Faced with a potentially career ending injury, Revis was traded to Tampa Bay because the Jets didn't want to pay fair market (or reward him for his previous performance) on a player whose recovery was a question mark/risk, particularly for a team that needed to allocate/spread budgetary reserves in numerous areas from a personnel standpoint. Tampa Bay released him after they couldn't find a trading partner and he took a fair market value deal from a perennial playoff contender (players like to win too). So WTF did Revis do wrong? I may be wrong but constant holdout rumors aside, I think he only actually held out once coming into the last year or so of his rookie contract where he was only going to be paid $1M. He only did what was best for him and his family and anyone who honestly believes they would have done things differently is just a complete fool.
Revis was a great player for the jets, deserved every bit of money he was asking for. Tanny blowing it on Holmes, sanchez, Harris, Cro was the reason all this bullshit occurred. It has nothing to do with revis. Every great corner in the league has to play with a certain swagger, a bit of "I'm the best" attitude. People calling him selfish are shortsighted
so why did idzik have no interest after the cap was fixed and he called the jets first? Revis cares more about the money than his team or winning. That makes him a me first player. I don't blame him for that it's just not the type of player I think really helps you win championships. Thankfully we have a real leader like Wilkerson now.
Revis is eating some humble pie right now. Next year he'll be back at a much cheaper rate. Bank on it! He has changed.
I dont think people are calling him selfish. I think people are calling him the definition of selfish. Wanna hold out once? Thats cool with me. Like I said in a previous post , Im all for players getting their worth. But when a holdout is the first thing on your mind every offseason , it tends to be a bit much. No doubt Tanny handed out some horrible contracts. But that doesnt mean that if he didnt he should've given some of that $$ to Revis. Revis got paid as the top CB in the league through most of his time here. And that still wasnt enough.
Perhaps he wants to retain cap space/flexibility in order to have the option/ability to sign more players based on his and/or the CS's assessment of team needs while the player personnel picture further clarifies itself as camp progresses. What if Mangold or another key player was lost for the season due to a camp/pre-season injury? What if Colon doesn't recover sufficiently and no one on the current roster steps up and we have to sign someone who can do the job? What if none of our wide receivers outside of Decker and Kerley make the grade and we need to go out and get one or more players who do? By signing Revis, even for a year, it would have tied up a huge amount of money and left little margin for error as well as flexibility should any acquisition needs emerge in one or more positional areas this Summer. You, nor anyone else here definitively knows the answer to that question. If or when Wilkerson has a contractual standoff with management, will you turn on him also? The Jets showed no loyalty to Revis when they traded him away. The fact that he cares about being justly compensated makes him a mature and responsible adult with sensible priorities. Characterizing him as a "me first" player is narrow minded at best. However, as I always try to keep a fair and open to any rational opposing point of view, please tell me what you would have done differently if you were Revis.
He's getting paid something like $12,000,000 this season. If that's what you'd call a serving of humble pie, what are you eating for lunch these days?
This is in no way shape or form humble pie. He doesn't fit in with what this team is attempting to accomplish.
Considering he got 16 last year, and originally was looking to get paid 16m on average per year, it's true. He's eating humble pie because that 16m demand landed him on a shit team and now he realized that taking a paycut to play on a decent team was important. Winning is priceless. He's going to learn that this year, and like Lebron, he'll be back and the Jets will be 10x the team he was traded from. At least I hope. I just don't see how the Patriots aren't substantially improved with him without an offensive collapse / brady injury.
Unless you can come up with a link I call bullshit on this. I never saw or read anywhere that Revis said the Jets were his only choice or even more ridiculously that money didn't matter. We all read that Revis camp reached out to the Jets. This was before he signed with the Pats. At the time most people thought they were trying to drum up a bidding war.
