The 2014 NFL cap is $133M.

Jets are currently at $108M with $25M of cap space left over (which includes $1.4M rollover from 2013). If Idzik rolls our $25M into 2015 we'll have around $50M (plus any 2015 NFL increase) in cap space to sign rookies, FA's, and re-up our own stars, far more than any other team.

The 'Woody is cheap' VS 'Idzik is a genius' debate will start on it's own with no input from me so let me end with a surprising observation: Our Offense outspends our Defense by $10M.

Rank Team Offense Defense Rollover Total Cap Cap Space
    1 Jacksonville Jaguars 51.7 52.4 19.6 120.0 31.6
    2 Cleveland Browns 50.5 60.6 24.5 128.5 28.4
    3 New York Jets 50.3 40.6 1.4 108.9 25.4
    10 Miami Dolphins 65.4 61.1 18.0 137.3 13.2
    19 Buffalo Bills 49.6 66.7 17.8 143.0 7.5
    22 New England Pats 64.4 52.8 4.1 133.1 5.9
    32 Denver Broncos 72.7 51.8 6.4 138.2 -2.0

edit: Does anyone know how to post numbers in chart form? this looked so nice till I hit the 'post' button.

edit: you should probably click the link for a really nice 1-page spread sheet showing the cap situation of every team...much easier to read then my copy/paste above.

I don't think we can't just roll the $25 mil over into next year. The NFL has a salary floor which dictates that each team spends at least 89% of the $133 mil cap, or about $118 million. We've got a little bit of spending to do before the season starts.

I think you're right but somehow the Browns rolled over $24.5M into this year from 2013.

But if you're right we have another $10M to spend this year. My guess is Idzik will be waiting for a vet DB and Guard from a training camp cut from some other team.

You're thinking of the old CBA. The new CBA lets your roll cap space forward.

The 89% floor is for a 4 year period- you must spend 89% of the 4 year total. If you don't, you have to pay extra money, retroactively, to the players who were on the team those years until you hit 89%.

Idzik can roll the space forward and use it next year; we don't have to spend any particular amount in any particular year since it's a soft floor. Whereas the salary cap is a hard cap that you can't exceed.

So if Idzik sits tight this year we could have $25M 2014 rollover+ 25M 2015 cap space + $10M increase = $60M in loose cash next year. wow. What a difference from 2 years ago.

Next question becomes, what good FA's are available next year?

Dez Bryant's a FA after this season, but I doubt the Cowboys let him even sniff free agency.

thats the unfortunate thing... next years FA class does not have a lot of positions of need for us besides WR but even most of those guys are sort of on the "too good to leave" level. I really wish we had got Vontae/Verner/DRC this year because theres basically no elite and young corner talent in next years class. Unfortunately there is a massive amount of would be free agents from the insane DE class(JJ watt, Mo, cameron jordan, von, etc.) who are being fifth year optioned as part of something that occurred during their draft class.

One guy that I think we should go after is Vontaze Burfict if he reaches free agency. I think he would be awesome to replace David Harris at ILB since harris is gettin up there in age and I also think him and demario together would be one hell of a charismatic braintrust for the front seven. Both are known to be good leaders(burfict since he got to the nfl) and pump up guys

Also think if Justin Houston reaches free agency and we sign him our front seven is officially best in the league(counting on coples breakin out this year)... would be so sick.

Kinda strange to think we only have 3 starters over 25 on defense and our only older players on O are magold and brick(although they are extremely important). Makes me wonder what positions we will target early come 2o15 draft. CB? new LT or C? OLB if we dont get houston? ILB if we dont resign harris? a true workhorse rb like melvin gordon or todd gurley?
Not sure, but what I do think is that with this crazy amount of money and idzik not one to deal picks we could be in for contention in 2 years from now. Especially if Geno, milliner, coples, and stephen hill could put it together in the mean time.

Is it too early to start looking at replacements for Brick and mangold? Could anyone on our roster provide that? is Dalton Freeman really that good? 'Lot of questions still need to be answered, but still think it holds true that the team will be pretty damn good come 2016, 2015 im a little tentative to remark about

We'll need a lot of money for the big contracts that some of our emerging stars are going to demand over the next couple of years. I reckon there will be no free agent spending spree next year and that Idzik will stick to his method, adding most of the new talent through the draft.

I can totally understand the thrill of looking at a list of top names in free agency, but I really don't think it's the way to build a long-term contender. I'll be disappointed if Idzik succumbs to the temptation to bring in a lot of free agents next year.

Is Dez Bryant the type of player Idzik is going to be interested in?

Dallas is currently showing a 2015 cap # of $139,131,507 and that does not include Dez. They will have to make some serious moves to free up space to sign him but I don't see how Jerruh let's him walk.
    (source: http://overthecap.com/teamcap.php?Team=Cowboys&Year=2015)

WR: Roddy White, Dez Bryant, Demarius Thomas, Reggie Wayne, Wes Welker, Michael Crabtree, Jeremy Maclin, Jordy Nelson, Jeremy Kerley
    TE: Jermaine Gresham, Kyle Rudolph
OLB (3-4): Brian Orakpo, Jason Worilds, Justin Houston, Sam Acho
    DL: Snacks Harrison, Kenrick Ellis

Need to add the $7,365,201 in Dead Money to that $139,131,507. There is over $5M for Miles Austin and over $2M for Orton plus a few JAGS.

Idzik has put us in a good spot.

We have a ton of flexibility and a good young roster.

I'd like to re-sign Wilk, Harrison and Kerley.
Ellis is a tough one, re-signing 2 quality NT's is a bit of a luxury. That said, if the price is reasonable I'd do it. Good NT's are not exactly a dime a dozen.

After that, I'd focus some FA money on the offensive line.
Rudolph could be a cost effective role player signing as well. Last TE we had who could block worth a shit was Hartsock, but he provided 0 threat in the passing game.
