College career ends at the draft unless a player is drafted in the first few rounds, then they get a bit of leeway. Boyd was drafted in the 6th round and only because Rex gets a draft pick every year. That luxury might afford Boyd a roster spot, but not because he has earned anything.
He was Seth's pick. And if there is one thing Rex doesn't have a clue about it is QB. Simms should be given a chance, but he will not be with the team for very long.
Depends on the team situation, plenty of capable QBs are thrust into bad situations and it ruins their potential. But I do think he has starter potential and I think he could be an outstanding QB if he hits the right spot. Obviously that spot isn't the Jets unless some really rare chips fall.
Don't see why we just keep Simms? He knows the playbook better and has some first team reps. Is the talent upside of Boyd really that good?
I understand everyone is in love with Simms' arm but if that's all it took to be a successful productive QB then Jeff George would be in the HOF.
Agreed entirely. The entire thread poses an interesting question of investment (time), potential, etc. There isn't a wrong answer. After seeing Simms, there's some basis to think that he's got potential. Based on his interviews, he also seems to have the right character. (And he's also a local kid, which also helps). Conversely, Boyd's got an interesting skillset, tons of starting experience in college, and evidence of strong intangibles. While it'd be nice to keep both, Boyd's the pick for me. That's not to say that he'll turn into a mini-McNair or Wilson (would love that). In all likelihood, neither of these guys will get a chance.
Thank you. The backup QB position is an important position, and if he's at least adequate at that, he's still an assert to the team.
