It really is interesting to project our starting line up for opening day and realize that we may have only 2 starters with more than 4 years experience on the defense (and only Mo Wilk is at 4). I can't speak to other rosters and I assume that this is the way of the new NFL with more younger starters than ever before, but it is encouraging to see that we have a young group that could stay together for a long time. Which also reminds us why Idzik, as maddening as it might seem at some time, has been so judicious with spending on older players......there will be a lot of these young guys we will want to keep and having the bucks to do it will prove wise down the road.

Of course this starting line up projection is a guess, but certainly very possible.

    Pryor - R
    Allen - 3
    Milliner - 2
    McDougle - R
    Coples - 3
    Harris - 8
    David - 3
    Pace - 12
    Wilkerson - 4
    Harrison - 3
    Richardson - 2

Even many of the primary backups are 4 years or less
    Ellis - 4
    Bellore - 4
    McIntyre - 4
    George - R
    Jarrett - 3
    Bush - 3

I don't pretend to know enough about other teams projected starting lineups, but can anyone think of other defenses that may be younger or just as young?

Lastly, if Rex and Thurman can have this young a group in the top 8-10 in defense, that would be pretty damn impressive despot the lack of experience on this side of the ball.

Dawan Landry is starting opposite Pryor. He knows Rex's defense better than anyone on the team and Rex picked him as one of three players who stood out in mini camp.

And it'd be beyond shocking if McDougal starts over Patterson.

But we definitely have a a nice young core. If Milliner and Pryor pan out like they're projected to, watch out.

I've been thinking about this a lot lately. Every off-season my friends and I text back and forth about different things about our respective team. This summer I've been bragging about how young our defense is. The whole team in general is young, but especially the d-line, and secondary.

I don't think it matters much who starts at safety, because it's clear at least to me that we will use all 3 of the main guys heavily. I bet Josh Bush. and Jarrett even get some reps in too.

The only main thing I disagree with is the last thing you said tho OP. I don't think it would be "pretty damn impressive" to field a top 10 defense despite experience. It's not like these guys are all rookies. They know what they're doing. I fully expect a top 10 defense, maybe even top 5. I think last year was the first Ryan defense that didn't finish in the top 10 for us, and that defense still was 11th.

it would be really suprising if mcdougle would start over paterson since we saw how dee struggled last year, but this is a promissing D assuming we got the cap room to pay all this guys down the road.

It looks like that's what Idzik is planning to do with all that extra cap space we have. So we won't be breaking the bank in the offseasons signing big name free agents, or even that second tier group of good to very good free agents. However, he's going to use that money to lock up our home grown guys.

I don't have a problem with this as long as we draft well. We're not going to hit it big on every pick, but as long as we get at least one quality player from our first two picks, and hopefully find a diamond or two in the rough in rounds 3-7 we'll be ok.

The only thing that worries me about this is that Idzik hasn't done anything yet to lock up Mo Wilks, and now would be the perfect time to do it.

I doubt Woody instructed him to try and save money for him, because Woody never gave Mike T shit with spending ALL of his cap money. I mean we've been up against the cap limit for years and we've never heard Woody complain once.

So I just hope Idzik has this plan in mind to lock up our home grown talent, and he's not just being frugal. If he's confident enough with the scouting department to have good drafts every year we really shouldn't need to sign high priced free agents anyway.

We'll have the cap space to keep the core of this d playing together for years. I mean the team will always have positions that need to be replaced, but you don't have to do that with a guy costing you ten million a year just to field a good team.

New York Jets Have Heaviest Defensive Front in the NFL
By Scott Salmon on Jun 23 2014, 10:14a

    http://www.ganggreennation.com/2014...jets-have-heaviest-defensive-front-in-the-nfl

    Per Jimmy Kempski:

The Cowboys have the lightest projected defensive front 7 in the NFL. Jets are the heaviest. Eagles 7th heaviest. pic.twitter.com/M7hPiWej8N

    — Jimmy Kempski (@JimmyKempski) June 23, 2014

In a sense, this isn't surprising. Rex Ryan has always been known to make stopping the run with his defensive front his first priority, rather than rushing the passer. It's easier to do that with big bodies up front.

There also doesn't seem to be a correlation between good defenses and the weight of their front seven. For example, you have the New York Jets, Baltimore Ravens, and Kansas City Chiefs at the top of the list. Conversely, you have the San Francisco 49ers, St. Louis Rams, and the Seattle Seahawks at the bottom. What do you think?

Jets' Sheldon Richardson on sophomore slump: 'That sounds like a rookie wall, something I never hit'
    By Darryl Slater/The Star-Ledger
    on June 23, 2014 at 10:57 AM, updated June 23, 2014 at 11:04 AM

    http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...like_a_rookie_wall_something_i_never_hit.html

The next month is a quiet time for NFL players, but that does not mean it isn’t important.

The Jets wrapped up offseason workouts last week, with a three-day minicamp from Tuesday through Thursday. Their players will report to training camp in Cortland, N.Y., on July 23.

Between now and then, players can do whatever they want. Jets coach Rex Ryan encourages them to get away from football for a little while, but maintain their physical conditioning. (Ryan dove headfirst into his vacation Sunday, by attending the United States’ World Cup game against Portugal in Brazil.)

One of the Jets’ most important players, second-year defensive tackle Sheldon Richardson (the reigning NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year), does not have any big plans for this coming month. He is going to stick around New Jersey for a couple weeks, and then head home to St. Louis to visit his family.

While not straying too far from his usual routine, Richardson is sure that one thing will not be on his mind – a sophomore slump.

“That sounds like a rookie wall, something I never hit,” he said. “It sounds a lot like it to me.”

Richardson knows himself well enough to understand that he needs to continue his physical conditioning and workout regimen during this next month.

“For me, I like to just stick with it, because when I stop, I’m kind of a guy who really shuts down everything, so I just keep going,” he said. “I’m going to get away from football, but as far as working out, nah, I’m going to stick with it.”

Last year, Richardson used this time of year to relax, because “my body was dead” from preparing for the NFL Combine, and following it with rookie minicamp and offseason workouts, as he tried to prove himself to his coaches and learn the playbook.

Last year, weary from all that physical and mental pressure, he mostly did cardio work during the month off before training camp. Now, he expects to lift more weights.

“It’s a time for you to make yourself better,” he said.

Though players cannot work with their coaches during this time, they can still study.

“The playbook, you don’t need the coaches, really,” Richardson said. “You can teach yourself, pick up little things you notice and probably something the coach might’ve overlooked. But knowing Dundee, he’s probably caught it all.”

(By the way, Dundee – as in the 1986 cinematic classic “Crocodile Dundee” – is a nickname for Jets defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.)

Richardson expects to focus mostly on working out in the next couple weeks. He might “catch a game every blue moon,” he said, but he won’t be watching a ton of film.

Richardson said all his “nicks” from last season are healed, and he is looking forward to preparing his body between now and training camp. He said he will probably sleep in most mornings at the house he shares with teammates Troy Davis, Will Campbell and Rontez Miles, and then head over to the Jets’ facility to work out.

“When we get closer to camp,” he said, “I might have to start waking up a little bit earlier to get used to (the camp schedule).”

would be nice to have some more speed at LB in back of that weight. the SB winning ravens had a huge dline with siragusa and adams.

I'd bet that Idzik is in talks with Mo's agent, though he might take a week or two off during this break since it's that time of year.

If he can get a good deal done, I'm sure he will do it. He can still roll the cap space forward, so it's no big problem if there are +$20m unspent. I don't really know what the numbers are for someone like Mo, but I'm sure the Jets will end up paying it. The big thing is that Idzik has the chance to possibly get Mo to take a slightly smaller (by 5% - 10%) overall contract, in exchange for a big raise right now.

No, I don't have the TGG app, but whenever I login, the main page has a sidebar of relevant articles, and I'm sure that is the same feed as the app you are subscribed to.

Rams, Texans and Cowboys may have starting lineups that will be younger than the Jets. We will not know for sure until we see the Week 1 starting lineups.

That's the first time in a while that I've read about a non-QB being asked about a potential sophomore slump. Funny stuff, but Sanchez had his most efficient year in year 2.
