Please read the first post of the thread again. I pretty much share the same optimism. In my own words, here is what I think. 1) We are still 15-20 mil or so under the cap and can sign players till the season starts. 2) Our defensive line is young and currently is listed as Top 3. Worst case, we will have a Top 5 defense. 3) Although not a big fan of Geno, he might improve and become above average QB. There is still hope. 4) We brought in good players. Decker, CJ2K, Amaro will impact on Offense. 5) We are not overpaying any player and our future looks bright on terms of cap space. We should be able to sign our own stars down the road. 6) Idzik has done a great job so far by putting us under the cap while improving the roster. These are just to name a few. Let me know what you think about the future.
When I try to be positive about something, I look at the current structure of the team: Good front office? Better than we've had Good Coach: Good not great Owner: Okay Drafting: Two years under current regime, too early to tell Offense: Average At Best Defense: Top Ten Grade: Incomplete. Compared to the Butt Fumble year, I'd say that looks promising.
Excellent post. If NFL success is indeed a numbers game and Idzik got his degree in Math, I am feeling good all over. Like a lot of posters, I have examined JI's management decisions up, down and sideways. The windup is all his player signings have a lot of upside, with the best being Decker, Vick and CJ--more proven commodities. If the percentages are correct on the Draft, then there is about an 18% chance out of 12 that (roughly 2 players) make it to becoming Some very good players. I hope this philosophy turns more old time fans into brightsiders. Unless the entire OL collapses (without some backup) even a fair talent QB like Geno can win many games by just handing the ball off !! Guy gets into trouble IF he has to throw the football. So the Jets move chains via ground and pound ie Ivory, Powell, Goodsen, Richardson, CJ etc.. Getting back to numbers game, make sure you have Geno in a position to throw only high percentage passes eg third and three or second down and four. If am not mistaken, this is a Wild Card team and maybe more. Really believe the Jets can beat this miserable schedule because Smith has a no brainer job with offseason talent assembled. Geno maybe has harder time figuring out to drink Gatoraid lol.
The team has made some moves in the right direction, but there's a serious case of rose colored glasses in this thread. IMO this team has at least maintained its talent level overall in the past few years, which doesn't sound that impressive until you realized we managed this while going from the league's worst cap situation to the best. But we're still light years away from being "stacked". I'll go through my opinion on each position: The good: Coaching: Rex is still an elite DC, and Marty is the best OC we've had in recent memory. QB: Geno still hasn't proven anything except he deserves a chance to prove himself. At least he has potential, and I was a huge skeptic of his coming out of college. RB: Ivory is the best RB we've had since Thomas Jones, and combined with Powell and CJ give us a deep and versatile backfield. No superstars but I like what we have. DL: What else is there to say, we have an young, elite D-Line. WR/TE: With Decker, Kerley, and Amaro, combined with some half decent depth at WR, it's not great but should be worlds better than last year (not saying much). Probably the best group we've had since 2010 (again not that impressive but not a gaping wound). The scary: OL: The O-line situation isn't getting enough attention. Last year we weren't anything special, we still have no good answers at either guard position, and we very possibly just downgraded at RT. Meanwhile D-Brick and Mangold aren't getting any younger. We'll have to hope people step up this year. The only positive thing I can say is at least we have a lot of bodies to compete for spots. Letting Slauson and Howard go were possibly the most questionable moves Idzik has made as GM IMO. LB: I don't see any gaping holes this year, but we're still relying on Harris and Pace who aren't long term answers and are merely average. I expect we'll need to invest some high draft picks at the LB sooner rather than later. DB's: We're relying on Millner, who was benched a few times last year, as our #1 CB, a bunch of bodies at the #2 CB position, and Kyle Wilson who is an adequate nickleback. If Pryor is who we hope he is, and Allen at safety, hopefully we'll be decent at the safety position. Just like OL, we're hoping Millner gets it together, hope somebody steps to the plate at #2 CB, and that our rookie safety is as good as we hope. If any of those turn out not to be the case, it can be a disaster. The shitshow that was our bad, aging roster and atrocious cap situation Tanny left isn't going to be fixed overnight, and is still a work in progress. As far as I can tell there aren't any terrible contracts, we've gotten much younger, and have massive cap space. As long Geno becomes a starting caliber QB and we draft well, we should be contenders in the near future, but I still don't see it this year.
agreed, this team is sitting on alot of potential but right now that all it is. i am a little might be a bit more optimistic about the lb's and millner but i agree people need to pump the brakes a bit on the offense taking a huge step before we see what the oline looks like
Oh yeah, it's all coming back now. Nothing against him personally, I wish him good luck in his personal pursuits, but he was really overmatched back then. We've had some problems with the O-Line over the years, but he really sticks out. Well, no one is saying (as far as I can see) that we are a super bowl contender this upcoming year. My point was simply that in just over a year, we went from having almost no young promising players to a whole bunch of them. If you think back to that offseason when we traded Revis, who did we have to be excited about as fans? Wilkerson and that's it. Now, we got Wilkerson, Richardson, Harrison, Coples (based on his second half of the season last year), Davis, Milliner (based on how he finished the year), Decker, Kerley, and Pryor and Amaro (based on their college rep and draft spots). And there there are all the young players who haven't shown it yet but could do so in the future (McDougle, Rowling, Dozier, Geno, Saunders, Evans, etc). So while we haven't achieved anything yet, as a fan, there is just so much more to get excited about.
This is the NFL the Jets have plenty of talent to succeed and make the playoffs. The question in the NFL always is QB play and injuries. The Jets stay healthy and QB play improves the Jets will contend for the playoffs. Vick and Geno suck or some big injuries the Jets will suck. The league is built for 8-8 and there are no great teams or loaded teams. A big play here and injury there the Jets go 6-10 or 10-6.
The OL is the 1 area that could sink the jets this upcoming year - especially the tackle position. we appear to be too guard (inside) heavy with the youth and unless one or more of those guys can kick outside when necessary due to injury, we are fooked.
I didn't say there aren't reasons for optimism, in fact I think there are a lot of them. However prognostications of 10+ win seasons and taking the division back are a bit rich for me at the moment. We went 8-8 this past year, with a point differential of a 5-11 team, and while I think the roster is better this year and looking relatively bright for the future we still have MAJOR questions at a lot of key positions. Last year we proved that we aren't the worst team in the NFL and will fight every week, but that's about it.
I do feel like your overall talent level has increased, and really like the look of your defense, however, are you worried that if Geno doesn't work out that your going to be starting at square one at the most important position?, then of course the time frame it Takes to develop another young Qb and the growing pains that come with it.
Yep, that's the worry and that's why half the fanbase wants Vick starting over Geno, even if it's a bandaid. Geno had a pretty scary rookie season, and when he did settle down at the end of it, it was mainly because he was being as conservative as it gets. He never did seem to slow the game down in his head, and he's one of the biggest question marks on the team and at the most important position on the field. Remains to be seen how well he'll perform, but it seems like a waste of he does end up being a bust, having some rising stars on defense that will be stuck on the field twice as long as they need to.
In today's OTA's "Smith and Vick split the reps during Wednesday OTAs, with both taking 14 snaps in full-team scrimmages. Smith went 8-for-10 with a scramble, while Vick went 3-for-8 with a sack, a scramble, and a pass dropped." Geno gonna be ok this year.
We all need to just take a realist look upon our team. I for one think that QB like DJ were talking about that QB will be a deciding factor of playoffs...etc(Meaning I have full faith in the talent in the other positions to either be solid or excel this year comparable to last years team) . Unlike last year we have depth at that position as well and should have the ability to move the rock in a better fashion then in years past. Still think we need a punter(trolololol)
And tomorrow when he throws 3 picks and fumbles twice, that doesn't count, right? Geno gonna compete this year.
The one thing that I care to hear most about Geno is how much if at all he has improved his footwork? That had to have been his number one priority in the offseason. If he can't do that little than I don't expect much else from him this season.
