My take: 53 seconds of highly edited tape. Three or four throws for each, all on target. Two throws closer to waist high than shoulder high, one from each. What the hell are you seeing? Is there another half hour video I'm missing?

Lmfao, I'm with you on this one. It was a quick video showing the Jets QB's playing pitch and catch. My brother was a HS QB that is a walk-on at FAU and with a 1 minute video I could make him look like Peyton Manning.

Why are we creating separate threads for OTA videos... I have an OTA thread already open.

The only thing that video tells us is that Matt Simms is the minority in this QB race.

Actually Vick's ball placement was pretty bad in my eyes. He had ONE pass delivered at chest height - when it got there at that height, it was delivered about FULL arm ahead. Anybody with basic knowledge of WCO would tell you 'it looks god awful.'

What I mean is - if the WR has to make adjustment while catching, there goes the YAC. Vick's balls ALL required substantial adjustment on all throws. I can't understand how that translates into 'better ball placement' under any circumstances.

They're doing half speed walkthroughs in shorts.. The only thing you can assess from that video is participation. I don't understand how anyone could get anything else. Seems like a case of criticism being in the eye of the beholder.

There just wasn't enough there to justify any kind of assessment.

Actually, half of those throws you don't even see the ball get to the receiver. Both guys are throwing beautiful spirals, that should be enough.

    I don't even...whut?

I think we should just keep posting OTA stuff in this thread to piss JB off, since he demanded all OTA discussion go into his thread.

And when he starts The Official Training Camp Thread, we should also talk about that stuff here too.

You obviously didn't play football cause you have no idea what you just said. The ONLY pass that should be chest high or lower is a comeback (button-hook) all other throws you should be leading the receiver. What I saw in Vick's throws was high to the outside out of the possible reach of db's on man coveage, exactly where you want them. The reason you want hook's chest or lower is because you want them to stretch their arms out away from their bodies countering db man over the top pass defense. There may be instances where you have a player like Sproles or Reggie Bush where the pass in the flat should be chest high because you want to allow them to make a move instead of leading them to the defense, BUT THATS IT. I challenge anyone who has ever played QB or DB to contest me on this because I played both positions, 8 years worth of it. Smith's throws were all chest high passes regardless of the route and could all be challenged or picked because of that small 1-2 yards misfire.

From the replies that I have received, most also have no idea what they are talking about. Furthermore, that being said, those same people also have no idea the subtleties and small factors that make a huge difference in QB and DB play. A small misstep by a db, a 1 yard misfire by the qb could mean the difference between a win and a loss. NTM these are things over the course of a game or a season that are accumulative.

    1. Did I mention 'lower' in any place? Check that first before boasting how awesome your 8 year experience is.

    2. Fact still remains - if your ball is either too high or too low, YAC is busted. I don't understand just what the fuck you are talking about. In, Out, Dig, Slant - they are all the routes that you need to throw about the chest level. You want to hit the WR in space with these routes, so he can turn upfield and run. If you are throwing lower, that means a. you don't want INT and b. you want a safe completion that doesn't expose the WR to hits. Throwing high is the worst - deeper coverage guys have a shot at it, or if the WR comes down with the ball, he is basically defenseless.

    3. Or probably your 8 years of experience has evolved football beyond the point of no return. Bill Walsh can rest in peace, knowing his system has become obsolete.

    Precisely my point. Thank you.

Someone was claiming Vick's ball placement was considerably better than that of Geno Smith. I didn't make the claim. I only said the ball placements from both QBs were subpar. Which is more than understandable, as it's OTA, with things going at half speed without pads.
