Most of you probably don't know the connection between Geno and Boyd. I'm a WVU fan and Boyd was originally committed to us. Rumor has it, his dad was pretty pushy with our OC, trying to tell him how the offense should be run with his son at QB. This didn't go over too well, so he decommitted and went to Clemson. We then replaced Boyd with Geno. The two then met in the Orange Bowl after the 2011 season, where Geno and the offense proceeded to drop 70 points on them. Both Boyd and Watkins were very unimpressive that night. There has always been debate between WVU fans on who the better QB really was/is, so it looks like that debate could continue even further. I'm putting my money on Geno.
Very interesting, I had no idea. Thanks for sharing, it could mean some fun competition in a year or two.
I follow the ACC pretty close so I always had my eye on Boyd, but until this draft I never heard that full story. Cool stuff. In my experience, rivals always push each other to be the best. Let's hope Geno and Boyd will be friends, but also continue to push each other to be the best they can be.
hey if boyd can beat out geno i dont really care i just want the best guy to play qb dont see that happening though geno will most likely be our starter
Boyd was recruited with another highly rated player from Virginia, Logan Heastie. One of the top WRs in that recruiting class. They would go to recruiting camps decked out in WVU gear and even made t-shirts that read something like "Future Mountaineers...Boyd to Heastie". Heastie still came to WVU, but wasn't happy that he got a redshirt and the word was he didn't like to workout or put in the work to make it on the field. He left the team and if I remember right, he was arrested within a year or two for drugs back in Virginia. After Boyd threw an interception in that Orange Bowl game some WVU fans made t-shirts that read "Boyd to Tandy"...lol. Tandy now plays for Tampa Bay. Boyd actually threw two INTs in that game and lost a fumble. The other INT went to possibly our worst CB in the last 10 years, threw it right to him. The fumble was a thing of beauty caused by one of the best pass rushers we've ever had, Bruce Irvin (playing for Seattle). Boyd went back to pass, but scrambled, and Bruce came from the other side of the field, behind the LOS, and ran Boyd down with a tomahawk from behind to knock the ball lose as he was going down. Boyd had a pretty good career at Clemson, but he did have a bad night against us in that Orange Bowl.
Someone else mentioned that game, but that doesn't prove Geno is better. Boyd and Watkins had a bad game and WV had a better defense in a high scoring game. So even in a bad game Clemson had like 30 plus points. As a WV fan, I would expect that spin of events.
Also a WVU fan here. Mentioned this several times in the draft section. Never was any debate who was better. Geno was far and away better than Boyd. WVU is very thankful for Boyd's father. Very ironic that WVU destroyed them in the orange bowl and now Boyd will be his career backup. -- edit and no I'm not a Geno homer - I was on board with taking Johnny.
"Pure passing" is not even a strength of Boyd, so I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Also keep in mind that Geno has spent a year playing against professional defenses.
I'm getting at that I don't see Geno ever amounting to much in the NFL. I'd love to be proven wrong but I never wanted him, he clearly lacks the awareness and cerebral aspect of playing QB. So as I think Geno will be a wildcat player somewhere within 2 years, and Vick is not exactly young anymore, I don't mind having a guy like Tajh Boyd
That's a fair point but that doesn't been Boyd is better than Geno at this point. He's a rookie drafted at the end of the 6th round. Maybe after a year of watching Geno and/or Vick he'll get the opportunity to start. Unfortunately that would necessitate you being right about Geno.
I would have taken Murray over any of the other late round QB's, I feel like he's the most likely to have a chance to be a starter. Boyd doesn't have the arm strength for starters, and just was never THAT good in college anyway.
I'm glad the Jets didn't take Johnny Football. He seems to have this entitled air about him, where he expects success without any hard work. I'll take Geno over him any day- I want someone who is trying his hardest and doesn't have to be dragged out to practice or to watch tape. Also, Pryor can be great for us for many years, hopefully he will rejuvenate our secondary.
There won't be a competition so there is no debate. He is the perfect backup to Geno and Vick. He was the 12th qb taken this year for a reason. Be honest with yourself you just don't like Geno and in your opinion every qb in the nation is better than him. Must suck to be a fan like you. Just miserable
High scoring game? Clemson had 20 points at halftime and didn't score another TD until the game was over in the 4th quarter. Our D held them to two FGs in the 3rd. I would consider a high scoring game our game against Baylor in 2012 that ended 70-63. Boyd seemed to always struggle against good defenses (check out his stats vs S. Carolina every year). Geno did too, but not as bad. Geno and Boyd are very very similar players. I think Geno is the better passer and Boyd is the better runner. Lol...um...no. Boyd would be a better wildcat player than Geno. Boyd is more of a running QB. Geno played his first two seasons in college with a broken foot with pins and/or screws in his feet. Geno is definitely a pass-first QB who can run if he needs to, but Boyd is definitely the better runner.
Hahaha. I'm the most positive optimistic fan out there, I just want a smart a QB to lead us forward. Been suffering for decades. Last smart accurate guy we had was Chad. I actually don't think Geno is the worst QB in the nation, every QB drafted last year was way worse than him, was better than a bunch if 2012 (Tannyhill, Weeden, Osweiller, Cousins, Lindley) and I think Savage, Morris, Matthews, Wennington, Shaw, Renner, and Pachall are worse. I just loved this class and thought there were a bunch of guys either with a much higher football IQ or better QBs than Geno and wish we didn't have the impediment of Geno preventing us from getting one of the top guys. He's going to be a good QB, I just don't think he has the football IQ to get us over the top. Btw, was in Yankee Stadium--were you?--for the Pinstripe Bowl and he was very underwhelming. Saw him in the Dome as a junior and he was equally as underwhelming and was awful his sophomore year at WVU against us. Boyd smoked us at the Dome. I just go by what I see. _
I really liked this class as well. Lot of good guys. We weren't going to take on early and that was fine. I believe we should've taken Murray, Mettenberger, Fales, or McCarron those guys actually have potential Boyd does not. I believe Phil Simms knows a little about QB's and he said Geno would've been the best of this class correct? http://nypost.com/2014/02/27/phil-simms-jets-geno-better-than-any-qb-in-this-years-draft/ And where was I?, oh I don't know just every home game he ever played at WVU that's all. I was in attendance when he broke every school record possible where were you? I was there when every celebrity in the nation was tweeting Geno was like a video game and demanded to give him the heisman immediately forget that? His worst 2 games were those 2 and 1 was a meaningless bowl game in a snowy baseball field. But what do I know I just go by what I see.
