He's the captain of the offense, I don't take much stock into what he says in public, but I do look at certain points and know he's being serious. The team clearly wants him to continue progressing. He won't if he's on the bench. If he continues to improve on the last 4 games, he will start the season and Vick will be holding the clipboard. Only way Vick sees the field is if Geno regresses. Even if Rex is in win now mode, why can't we win with Geno Smith and an improved offense?
ugghh, that old fake competition nugget?.... THIS YEAR anyhow they WANT Smith to win for the sake of the franchise, they just won't bet the house on it. He apparently showed up to training camp much further along then where he was in last hers OTA's, hopefully theres a similar progression this year.
Yep I remember MM saying that Geno was not ready during rookie mini camps and that Sanchez would start had the season began at that point. He then said he was surprised at how further along Geno was by the time training camp began. So this idea that the competition was rigged is ridiculous.
It's not rigged at all. There is really no misinterpreting what he is saying in his interview: Geno is the favorite to start, and will be given every opportunity to win the starting job. They don't have reservations about playing Vick, but he is a known commodity. If Geno falters, Vick will be there to start.
It'd just be a waste if time for a forgone conclusion, might as well help your guy out by saying he won and giving as many reps as possible right? I think they wanted Sanchez to a put a stamp on his closely contested victory when they put him in that game. "The rookie is raw and could use some time adjusting to things, you got this just give a good drive or two and make your claim." It was ultimately a mistake and I'm sure the coaches didn't actually think he'd get hurt despite the chances of something like that happening (anything else was just a faulty attempt at saving face) I think they genuinely thought everything would work out and Sanchez could separate, no conspiracy just a risky call that turned up badly. Still the idea that the competition was rigged either way made no sense though, why not cut the pretense and put your starter in a position to get as much time to prepare as possible. there was no reward for a false competition, not ST holders or anything, and I just laugh at the idea of lying for no good reason. thats all I'll say on that matter, this thread is about 2014 not last year.
he was talking about last year. the fact that Vick doesn't need as many reps to understand the offense is a major bonus. Eventually if Smith looks like the obviously inferior QB then Vick will need more to have any semblance of chemistry with his WR's, but the time for that will be in august, for now its no great risk to have Smith take a few more. the spring should be all about how Smith has grown. I'll honestly say that this is a concept i hadn't thought of till now, but it sounds good.
The question is not whether Smith might or could win. The question is who is likely to help the team win more games. If you are Rex and you think it is Vick, all the rest goes out hte window. As for the part bolded above, you can't be serious. You can have that as an opinion, but to state it as a fact is ludicrous.
Honestly guys, when was the last time an OC said anything that should have com from the HC? MM should have deferred to Rex, I'm not trying to make a big deal of it, I'm just a little surprised that he feels confident enough to speak on the issue of who the starter is. My opinion is that for the sake of not starting a QB controversy or give the media anything they can twist into a QB controversy they are saying its Genos job, I'm expecting to see Vick behind center opening day. JMO
Vick helped confirm this today.. "Geno is the starting QB for THAT team..im here to make him a better QB from year 1 to year 2" - Mike Vick (Either this is a mental game he's playing with geno or this is reality)
All Vick is here for is to give us a viable option in the event Geno stinks. At least Vick could salvage the season. Plus it doesn't hurt that Vick can mentor and teach Geno.
I guess if we have to drop $5M on a BUQB, might as well get one that can win some games. Maybe win some head games too.
One of the reasons Vick was desirable to the Jets is that he demonstrated quite well last year how to handle this type of situation with his team mates and with the media. A lot of guys don't know how to do that and cause a lot of unnecessary friction and headaches for the organization (see Tebow). His comments aren't surprising and don't mean much other than he's a good team mate and a good soldier. That doesn't mean Vick isn't going to play to win the game. For Geno's sake I hope he gets that.
1st round QB = Geno is history, he may start this year but Vick is just as likely and a 1st rounder is always going to wind up on the field fairly soon. 2nd round QB = Serious competition and Geno is on notice that if he doesn't grab the job he's going to move down the depth chart. 3rd round QB = Developmental acquisition with the potential for a trade down the road. If he grabs the job, well that's icing on the cake. I see the Jets as fairly likely to grab a QB by the end of the 4th round. Might not happen but the odds seem good it will.
http://www.nj.com/jets/index.ssf/20...is_jets_starting_qb.html#incart_flyout_sports Obviously Geno starting as the number 1 isn't news, but this is a distinct change in Vick's tone. It looks like he really would embrace a role as a mentor and potential relief pitcher.
We have two guys that can go in and win us games. Vick/Geno sounds a whole lot better than Sanchez/Tebow!
I would imagine Geno has a much shorter leash this season than last. No way they allow Geno as much latitude this season as you have MV instead of Simms in the bullpen. Geno may start the season, but if he hits a long bad stretch, you have to think Rex won't hesitate to go to MV.
