IMHO the Jets have a real chance to field a better team next year.

What, after the dismal free agency attempt so far? You say. Well not so fast guys. The 52 man roster is no way near finalized; I don’t have to tell you that.

Trades will be made, good players will be cut, and in fact some of the better bargains are in front of us and typically made as teams get down to the short strokes and need to make the tough decisions for the players they really would like to keep but they can’t.

The first wave of free agency, the one so many fans here are freaking out over, is composed mostly of players with fat contracts, often far more lucrative than the contributions of the player, a fact that the current team just could not afford.

Did we miss on a couple of good candidates, yes of course, but don’t for a second fall in the trap of thinking that it was all Idzik’s fault. A few of these players wanted to go to a win now team and they would have never settled for the Jets. There might be a player or may be two that had we over paid for he would have signed with us but that isn’t the way to build a winning team and I applaud Idzik for it. Whenever you over pay for one player, you can rest assured some other deserving player in your team will get screwed, sooner or later.

I truly think we still have a damned good chance to trade for a high caliber corner, a shot to bring in another OG, a backup QB, and less likely but still feasible a shot at D. Jackson on a two year front loaded contract.

We further have one of the best opportunities in a while to load up on the draft. Take your pick, OLB, WR, Safety, TE and CB, not to mention ongoing efforts continuing beefing up our offensive line.

I think the surrounding infrastructure at WR and TE will be better. Our running game with Goodson back will improve in speed and in the passing game. Remains to be seen which Geno will show up, but I can’t help but think with a year under his belt and a solid training camp he can be equal if not better that the later games of last year.

As for the D, if we land Joseph and our LB core stays healthy, plus a little help on the draft could be the beginning of a great, great D.

It’s way too early to panic, but not nearly early enough to get excited at the opportunity to build a long term, strong nucleus thru the draft. For once I think the Jet’s are getting it right.

    Fire away

Good optimism but other teams improved significantly. To think we will get really lucky in the draft and find multiple impact players is hard to do. After all the nothing we did during free agency, I'm assuming this whole season is dedicated and hoping geno smith turns the corner and plays really well. I don't see any other plan they possibly have for this upcoming season.

This is my biggest fear, what happens if Geno isn't the guy, then its back to the drawing board all over again,Idzik said he wasn't looking for "quick fixes" in free agency but that's total bs there was a lot of young guys that coulda helped the tem.Talent is talent whther its draft or free agency ,I'm def not a fan of Idzik and his "turtle crossing the road" approach to what he does.He gives new meaning to the letters GM Get Moving

I agree... On here though filled with idzick believers. As wild as this sounds they even said on nfl network that it appears idzick is setting ryan up to fail and fire him. It's nuance, then I come here 9/10 people screaming at me about how great this accountant is. Lol I'm in 20 different threads arguing with 60 different people about idzick. It's comical that I have committed to this position and look fwd to complaint all day. Lol

I can't really figure out how someone things we will improve upon our record based on what we've seen so far. Sure there is still the draft and sure there is still some guys that will get cut that we can sign for cheap...but the other 31 teams in the league have those same opportunities. The difference is that many of them have already boosted their team through free agency and now have the opportunity to do even more through the draft and whatnot.

Signing some camp casualties and whatnot is all well and good but it's not likely you're going to be signing a half dozen starters that were cut from other rosters. You might get one or two decent contributors and some special team guys. It's not like we're going to get a 10 TD receiver or a 10 sack OLB from a guy who couldn't stick on the roster of the Chargers. It's just not likely to happen.

It really makes you scratch your head and wonder what the hell some people are seeing. And to think the Jets are going to vastly improve with some cheap late offseason cuts that they acquire is just pipe dreaming. D Jack is different because he comes with a high price tag. Yet the only FA's the Jets are getting at this point are depth signings and nothing more. Idzik better be a draft guru to fill all the holes on this roster going into 2014.

We could have gone into 2014 with the exact same team we had in 2013 and have been significantly better.

1- Milliner is finally stepping up at DB opposite whoever is on the other side. Having a whole season of Milliner like he played he last month will be a huge improvement for the Jets.

2- Richardson the Beast now has a whole season under his belt and Rex will use him an 1000 more different ways throughout the season.

3- Same with Q. He was adrift during the 1st half of the year but in 2014 he will have a lot of his new position figured out and won't be 'thinking so much' on every snap.

4- Geno - 2nd highest rated passer in the NFL over his last 4 games. Give me a whole season of that please.

So yeah, the benefit of fielding a young team is they get a lot better as the years go on. And this should be factored in when you're thinking about how the Jets will do in 2014, 15, to the moon.

Sign everybody! How dare we not make a play for every single big name free agent and after that fails complain about being in cap hell. Forget the fact that if you draft well and have to sign your own core players there might not be funds available because your cap is destroyed. Just sign guys that don't fit the system that you run, makes sense. Whatever, you guys have your opinions and I respect that, but I, for one, like the approach so far...

For that to happen Geno has to take a giant leap forward. But I'm not gonna put any expectations on the team until I see how the rest of the offseason plays out.

The competition approach. If you have a glaring whole fill it through FA (as they did with Decker at WR). If you don't have a glaring whole sign a bunch of guys and then let the coaching staff figure out who can play and then coach them up, which appears to be what they're do at CB.
