No. We threw big money at Revis and Sanchez. Holmes was cheap when we traded for him and still cheap as receivers go and a big part of our success. Bray was cheap and a huge asset. We did throw bad money at aging LB's, but that didn't break the bank. Our home grown guys along with poor draft picks killed us.

I don't know who you are listening too but Brady is always in the discussion. some folks rate Manning higher as they place a larger emphasis on stats and others rate Brady higher. I rate Brady higher. we are all entitled to our opinions.

The factors that I think contributed the most to our problems are:

    1. We didn't respect the draft.

The draft became almost an optional part of the Jets off-season activities, with the 1st and 2nd round picks getting a lot of attention and everything else being low priority. The Jets big trade ups often had the effect of turning later round picks into better 1st or 2nd round picks. I include the Shonn Greene trade up in this since the Jets saw him as a 2nd rounder and traded most of their remaining picks to trade up and get him with the 1st pick of the 3rd round.

    So...

    2. We didn't respect our ability to get good players by staying in place in the 1st and 2nd rounds.

We traded up often within those rounds to improve our pick and in the process gave up big chunks of value. We'd have gotten players just as good in many cases just by staying at our pick and taking what was there but we had no patience and we gambled a lot.

    3. We fell in love with certain players during the scouting and evaluation process and HAD to get those guys at all costs.

It wasn't just a question of players falling out of the ranges we expected them to go in. We some times traded up to improve our position by just a few picks, giving up value in the process to acquire players who might well have fallen to us anyway.

    4. We used the draft to fill current year holes instead of as a strategic reserve.

This lead to us constantly reaching for players at positions of need and trading up to reach for players at positions of need instead of taking the best player available.

That's pretty much enough to sink you over time. Woody Johnson bailed us out in 2008 and 2009 by spending heavily on free agents because the team didn't look that strong and he was trying to sell PSL's. That's where a better game plan from 2001 to 2007 would have really helped.

As of opening day 2008 the Jets had 12 homegrown players in the starting lineup and 11 of them drafted by the team. Brandon Moore was the 12th.

we swapped 1st rd picks and gave them backup players, we essentially gave up a 2nd rd pick to move up and select him. GREAT trade

#4 is so spot on. They were never one step ahead, they were always drafting to fix a problem. It started with Sanchez. Then they over valued their team a bit and took a corner because of how they lost last year to the Colts with Strickland getting hurt and Coleman getting picked on. 2011 seemed to get back on track on just picking talent. And then Idzik seemed to really follow this in 2012 with the whole DL pick.

In theory, if you draft BPA and make the right FA signings without ruining your cap, you won't have terrible years due to talent and you will have an established depth and talented young players

Actually it was Tannenbaum in 2012 with the DL, WR, LB picks right in a row. Idzik went against the flow when he took Richardson in 2013 despite the Jets being thick at DL already. We got the DROY out of that BPA take.

I dont know guys, only idzik has the answers......hopefully. I wish we woulda got a top cb in free agency. I think now with the cap space we have left we should try to sign Jared Allen and really put the pressure on the QB. 1st round get the best wr we can, and take it from there

Now you're comparing different games in different seasons in different arenas to make a case as to who's a better QB?

Brady may be better...but not because he scored more points against Seattle.
And if the talent around Peyton is better, maybe it's because he gets more out of his teamates.

By over-confident do you mean like predicting a SB win?

he's not better b/c he scored more against Seattle, just pointing that out b/c of the excuse making regarding the Seattle D which gave up a bunch of pts in the NFC playoffs is all of a suddent he '85 Bears in order to make excuses for Peyton.

Tim tebow led less talent in Denver to the div rd. Peyton has always had more talent w/ the possible exception of 2007 and he really only had Randy Moss that was better than anyone on Indy.

I have him top 5, around 3 or 4. I have Manning possibly cracking the top 10.

I like how some of you want the Jets to emulate two teams that together haven't won a SB in over 25 years (Pats 10, Denver 16)

Smoking crack? thats interesting, you are going to associate me with an illegal substance? I hope for your sake this was just a one time thing, and that you dont make accusations like this toward people you do not know. If not, you are going to find yourself in a world of trouble, just saying man.
