Trying to be a realistic Jet fan, I can't expect Decker to put up numbers with the Jets anywhere near what he did with Peyton last year. I said joking to a friend, I would be content with just half of his 87 catches, 1288 yards, and 11 td's. Then I thought about it and looked up the stats. HALF of his numbers would have been 44 catches, 644 yards, and 6 td's and would have been FIRST on the team in every category last year! That's kind of sad to think about. I just came up with this and thought I would share to put into perspective how poor our receivers' stats actually were last year (not that this was a surprise).
He caught 44 passes for 650 yards and 8 TDs with Tebow at QB in 2011 in an offense that was the worst passing offense I have seen in a long time.
I think this was a great signing for the Jets and I wish Decker well, I know he is going to help this team a lot. Good move by Idizk. Plus the signing of the RT was a must with Howard leaving.
Decker is not going to be the savior for the offense and that's not the role the Jets are intending him to fill. The Jets will supplement probably 3 additional Offensive weapons: WR, TE, and a pass catching RB. We will NOT have just 1 threat because more threats we have, more difficulty for other teams to game plan.
I think he will do better than that. But the Jets will not run a scheme like Denver's so it would be unreasonable to expect him to repeat. I usually do not do predictions, but I would think a healthy Decker would catch between 65 and 70 passes in the 750-850 yard range, considering his ability to get YAC. What is that, a 4 or 5 catch average? Marty will get him free for that.
I don't care about #s, he's going to put up decent #s but he gives us a real option in the pass game and that will open things up for others plus we aren't done. we are trying to sign another WR and we can also draft a guy. Our WR corps is going to be the best it has been since 2010- the last time we had a good group.
He put up those kind of stats in 2011 with Orton and Tebow throwing to him. I expect to see better numbers than that but I don't expect he will need to have seasons like the last 2, even though I would like him to, but they are hopefully going to have many more targets to spread the ball out to. Pick up a WR and TE in the 1st and 2nd, a RB coming out of the backfield to throw to, they already have Cumberland, Kerley, Nelson, etc. It's not going to be all on Decker.
I love the signing, the Jets needed a veteran receiver to shore up their offense, it's a stepping stone, but, a nice one.
That was his plan! Make the secondary realize you ain't throwing the ball all game. Just when they put their guard down, throw a TD!! It only works a couple times though, hence the two attempts.
No chance Evans is still available by the time the Jets pick. He and Watkins will be long gone. If the Jets are looking receiver when their time comes, the only guy of the big names left, realistically, will be Marquis Lee. Personally, I'm hoping for Ebron or Jenkins. Ebron looks like he's gonna be a freak.
Decker had one more catch in the SB than the entire Jets receiver corp from last season combined. He most be awesome!
Perspective is reality in FA and perspective helped us in this one. All of this he is not a true #1 crap made teams skeptical to throw him a boat load of cash and get right into Idzik's comfort zone in terms of spending/production. He is going to be open... a lot. Even if he is just a Revis decoy for the New England games that means Kerley, Cumby, Nelson and Hill will get more open looks. This helps the offense as a whole and makes everyone better. Great signing.
all for 10 million in the next two years and not penny more if he's not worth it, EXCELLENT signing. another threat to worry about or two and we're in business.
