If Geno is throwing under 20 passes a game, it's because we get out to leads early, and can use the run all day to control the ball. I want Geno to throw under 20 passes a game, too, but I want it to become a function of the Jets playing really well and jumping out to big leads. I don't want the Jets heading into the game thinking they'll refuse to pass and they'll win games. That's not going to win consistently. Points come primarily out of the passing game. These numbers are always thrown out this time in the offseason. It's all BS. If Geno stinks, sure, they'll try to hide him. If he takes big strides, he'll throw more.
Ridiculous report. Especially since during the last four games, we threw over 20 times in each of them. When we ground and pound...we lost. My guess is another team put this out
Cimini basically said on the radio today that this isnt true. Before anyone wants to crucify Rex and say that this makes him a horrible HC, take into consideration the source.
Imo, passing attempts is only part of the story in the last quarter of last season. It was not the case that the passing attack was the same in all four games. In both the Carolina and Cleveland games, the Jets basically were going underneath the pass D. Interestingly ypa in both games was under 6 yards, well below even Smith's season average of 6.88. And those two games can be distinguished from each other, where the attempts number for Carolina was roughly the same as for the Oakland and Miami games (respectively 28 for Carolina, with 25 and 27 for Oakland and Miami, respectively), while Cleveland got 36 pass attempts (interesting the Jets won with more attempts). The main thing Smith did to help in those four games was of course cutting down his horrific interceptions number (although of course he did throw two). But I don't see much of a pattern there of fewer pass attempts. Instead we saw attempts that on average went for less yardage per attempts. In other words it was conservative without reducing total attempts below roughly the mid twenties. Also remember that even when playing ahead, the Jets did not eschew the pass.
Joe Namath: Geno Smith has earned Jets' starting QB job right now Joe Namath thinks Jets QB Geno Smith has earned the right to be the starter. Joe Namath's support for Jets QB Geno Smith as the starter came with just hours before free agency officially began in the NFL and, along with it, discussions of who Gang Green could bring in at quarterback to compete with him. "Geno got some valuable experience, he improved along the way and he got the team excited about things. I don't have a great deal of confidence in what we hear coming out of any NFL team headquarters. So many things are clouded in mystery, posturing," he told Metro's Kristian Dyer. "He did a fine job for a rookie last year. You can't compare it to any other position or a veteran doing the job. It is such a team game and Geno didn't have a wonderful offense to work with. His wideouts were hurt, the receiving corps was so-so. The line improved." Namath liked what he saw out of tackle Austin Howard and noted guard Brian Winters improved. But when it came to Smith, the Super Bowl-winner thought the second-year QB should have an advantage over whoever he competes with: "This guy isn't performing like so-so. He had some good games; he had some games where he'd want to take things back I'm sure. First stringers are first stringers but it isn't etched in stone. Maybe you give him a little room, a slight edge. There's a tremendous upside to his game. Can he prove it? Can he be consistent? Geno is the starter going in but if someone performs better, they bring in someone else. But I think he earned enough to be the starter right now."
It's very difficult to win a championship when you feel you have to "hide" your QB. It's certainly not the formula for sustained success. Even with Seattle's run-first philosophy, Russell Wilson can make every throw and is as clutch as they come.
Still sounds like bull. I don't think any NFL team can go into a season with that plan, and certainly not before the roster has even been molded. _
Yeah, makes absolutely no sense for the coaching staff to make a determination like that at this point in time.
isnt that what lead to Sanchez's slow start, the ground and pound..? You see REX/Jets havent learned anything then if this is true that they want to lessen Geno.
